Kong Wa
Thanks to Colin Kong for the above picture
In 1989, Kong Wa's portrayal of a cancer patient in his film debut Life Goes On (Daan Yuen Yan Cheung Gau 但願人長久) earned him the award for Best New Artist in the 9th Hong Kong Film Awards. No doubt he has been one of the most talented but under-rated actor in Hong Kong. From 1990 to 1995, he had played the male lead in many ATV series such as 'Return To The Truth', 'A Cruel Lover', 'Secret Battle Of The Majesty', 'I Have A Date With Spring', etc. but roles as such could never really make him a household name. Fortunately he joined TVB in 1996 and had since made a few popular series like 'Lady Flower Fist' and 'Journey To The West', both of which got very high ratings, and more people have come to pay attention to this brilliant actor. In 1999, his impressive performance in 'Mr. Diana' and 'Happy Ever After' again proved his versatility in playing more complex characters in both modern and ancient dramas. With all these terrific work he did on TV and films in over a decade, I sincerely wish Kong Wa the recognition he long deserves .
From year 2000 to 2002, KW continued his brilliant acting in a number of TVB series such as 'Ups And Down', 'The Legend Of Lady Yang', 'Crimson Sabre', 'Seven Sisters', 'The Stamp of Love', 'A Step Into The Past' and 'In The Realm of Fancy', playing different roles from ancient drama to modern comedy. However, he was rarely given much credits even the series was a Hit.
In an article from the December issue of TV Week in 1996, KW once said:
" §Ú
¦¨ ¤é ¦P ¦Û ¤v Á¿
, §Ú ¬O ¥i ¥H , ¥i ¥H °µ ±o
¨ì ªº , ¥u ¬O ÁÙ ¤í
¯Ê ¤@ Ó ¾÷ ·| ."
( I always tell
myself, I can do it and I would make it, I just lack for one opportunity.)
This opportunity finally came six years later. In 2003, 'The King Of Yesterday And Tomorrow' with KW taking the title role as Emperor Yong-Zheng/Li Da-Xia, got incredible ratings during the four weeks' airing period with the highest at 46 points. His awesome performance proved it to the world that he is more than capable to lead a TVB series to its success, as long as he is given the right opportunity. Six years may not be a long wait for some other actors/actresses, but I consider that is comparatively long for KW who has got a portfolio full of excellent acting credits since 1986. I sincerely hope this belated success will then open more doors for his career, bringing him plenty of different opportunities in the future.
