Those
Were The Days
Oh
my gosh!! Two of my most favorite actors together, they both looked so
handsome!
(and
they still are now)
When KW was still
a teenager, he went on a pleasure trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with his
friends and they accidentally bumped into Chow Yun-Fat. They approached
CYF as his fans and requested to take a photo with him. CYF put his arms
around KW's shoulders when the photo was being taken. "Fat Gor was very
friendly and sincere," he can still remember clearly, "I just never thought
of one day we would be working in the same business and I would become
an actor myself." (later they both won in the 9th Hong
Kong Film Awards 1989, KW for Best New Artist in 'Life Goes On' and CYF for
Best Actor in 'All About Ah-long'. What a coincidence! )
Having
fun in the recording studio!
During the same trip
in Kuala Lumpur, a friend of his dad introduced him to Cheng Kam Cheong,
a famous entertainer in S.E.Asia. Cheng asked him to go for an audition
in the recording studio and the result was so satisfactory
(no
surprise to me, he has got a nice voice) that
he was then offered to sing two songs for a copycat album. After that,
Cheng, who already could see KW's artistic talent (+ his extremely
handsome face I guess, he was so cute in his teens),
even suggested him to stay in Kuala Lumpur. But KW refused. At that time,
he just did not have any interest or intention in pursuing a career in
show biz at all.
Because of his good
looks, he also got the opportunity to do a commercial (or an
ad, it was not specified clearly in the article) in
Kuala Lumpur. He accepted the offer as he thought that it should be fun
to do it. Not till he arrived at the shooting location, he found out that
it was a suntan lotion commercial and he had to wear only swimming trunks.
"I had no problem with that,
I was a boy so it would do me no harm," he said. "Besides, I used
to do sit-up and push-up at home to keep my body in shape. I considered
myself fairly well-built at that age, maybe just not muscular enough." (I have to
disagree. He looked perfect. And he was nicely tanned like always)
**** you might start wondering if I have got
any photo of that commercial. I do have it but I would consider it dis-
respectful to KW if I put it on the net without his consent. So, sorry
guys!
After the trip, he went back to Hong Kong and continued working for his brother at the airport. Despite of these exciting experience he had come across in Kuala Lumpur, he still didn't find himself very much attracted to show biz yet. Until years later in his 20s, he accompanied his friend to apply for the artistes' training class at ATV, his friend didn't get accepted, but....... he did.
And the rest is history.............
He
loves dogs!
