Lily is getting Grace and Zoe ready for school. Rick calls, and they have trouble finding a time to meet, but they settle on that night.
| Rick then goes to pick up Eli and Jessie at their mom's to drive them to school. While he is there, Karen tells him that she heard Eli tell his girlfriend Jennifer that he loves her. Karen worried they might be having sex, and asks Rick to talk to Eli, since he's the dad. At school that day, Grace walks by Jennifer and Eli while telling a friend she saw her mom and Eli's dad making out on the couch. At the architecture firm, Lindsay calls for Rick. Here we learn that Rick is in an awkward situation. He was dating Lindsay, but while she was away on a trip he met Lily. Rick now has to formally break off the relationship with Lindsey. Eli shows up at the firm, where Rick has his talk with his son. Eli tells his father that he and Jenn haven't had sex yet. During dinner that night, Rick and Lily discuss their jobs. We learn that Lily wanted to go into teaching, but her dad persuaded her to manage a bookstore with her sister, Judy. After dinner, Lily and Rick start to make out in his car, but then realize that they're too old for that sort of thing, but since they have families at home, they are like teenagers with no where to go. When Rick comes home, Eli comes down to warn Rick not to come upstairs. Eli was supposed to be at his mom's, but he and Jenn came to Rick's to have sex. Eli leaves to take Jennifer home. Rick finds another message from Lindsay on his answering machine. Lindsay is wondering when they can get together. When Eli returns, Rick tells Eli that he doesn't mind him having sex, but he is disappointed his son lied to him (sort of) that afternoon. It's ironic that both father and son are having the problem of "nowhere to go." Rick calls Lindsay to end their relationship, but before he can, Lily calls. Rick has to hang up on Lindsay (saying Jessie needs homework help) to talk to Lily, but then has to hang up on Lily (using the same excuse) to talk to Karen about Eli. The next day at the bookstore, Lily tells Karen that something just didn't seem right with Rick when she called. In the afternoon, Rick calls Lily back. Zoe answers, and says her mom's in the bathroom. Rick tells Zoe to make sure Lily calls him back. Walking through the halls of the high school, Eli sees Jennifer who is upset with Eli. When Eli inquires to what it bothering her, she replies, "Ask Grace Manning!" Both Lily and Rick are at home waiting for the other to call. Rick tries the Manning residence again, but doesn't get through because Zoe is playing with the phone. In a few minutes, Lily tries to reach Rick, but Eli is trying unsuccessfully to talk with Jennifer, and he ignores the call waiting. Eli hangs up just as Lily does, who has given up and is taking the kids shopping. Rick calls Lily again, but gets her answering machine. The next day at the bookstore, Rick finally reaches Lily, and they both realized what happened last night. They decide to make a date for lunch. At the high school, Eli pulls Grace aside to confront her. Eli tells her he heard from 6 people that Grace was falsely saying that her parents caught them together at the Manning's. Grace realizes what happened and tells Eli that she told 1 person that, but about her mom and his dad. While Rick and Lily are having lunch, Lindsay shows up. Rick gets flustered, and tells Lily that Lindsay is an old friend whom he worked with because she's a realtor. When Lily arrives home, Grace and Zoe are stuck outside because Grace didn't bring her house keys. Jake arrives and tells Lily she looks great and appears to have lost weight. Eli tells Jennifer how the rumor started, and she says she never really believed he and Grace were together, but that she thinks he could easily sleep with anyone and not care. Lily tells Judy she can sense that Lindsay was an old girlfriend. Lily is nervous about going over to Rick's place that night, and that she hardly even knows him. Lily is so worried that she lies and leaves a message on Rick's machine saying something came up and she can't come. That night, Eli shows up at his dad to pick up socks. He tells his dad about his problems with Jennifer and says he doesn't understand women. Rick explains that concerning sex, men worry about the moment, while women are scared about what will happen after, and that you'll know when it's the right time. Rick then realizes why Lily canceled, and leaves the apartment. Rick shows up at Lily's door, and takes her back to his place. The talk, and Rick tells Lily the truth about Lindsay. Rick and Lily confront their fears and make love. Lily tells (in the black + white talk-to-the-camera scenes) how she saw bills for a downtown hotel (signs of Jake's infidelity), but didn't act on them. She says that when you know something but don't do anything about it, it becomes your responsibility. Lily starts crying and tells Rick that after what happened with Jake, it was hard to think another man would want her. Is Rick the right one? (Stay tuned!) | ||
