Lily goes outside to pick up the morning paper, and is greeted by Rick. When she goes back inside, Grace, while preparing for school, confides that the whole school knows the story of the family walking in on Lily and Rick.

At the bookstore that day, Lily's co-worker, Naomi, learns that the man Lily is dating is Rick Sammler. Rick's ex-wife, Karen, just happens to be one Naomi's best friends.

At the high school, Grace and Eli are in a meeting about a carnival to be held to fund athletics. Grace, having an artistic talent, is put on the sign making committee, and so is Eli.

Jake is at Lily's, waiting for Grace to arrive home so he can take her and Zoe to his place. It is evident that Zoe has her dad wrapped around her finger, as she weasels out of homework and gets another cupcake from him. Lily and Grace come, and while the kids get ready to leave, Lily and Jake start talking. Jake tells her that a friend of his heard about her and Rick also.

That night Lily and Rick mark their 5th date at his house. Karen stops by to pick up Jessie's outline, and Lily hides so as not to meet her. Karen does realize that Rick has someone over though, when she sees the table set, and promptly leaves.

The following day at school, Eli and Grace are having a good time painting the signs for the fair together. They are given the parent and student volunteer schedules.

Lily comes to pick up Grace, but she isn't done yet. Lily walks around the booths, and sees Rick. She tries to indiscreetly motions to him to go into the school.

Lily tells Rick that she wants to try and keep their relationship private so far.

At the Sammler's that night, Eli shows his dad the schedule, which has Rick and Jake working together. Karen and Lily are set to work at the same booth also, as are Eli and Grace. Eli promises his father that he'll talk to Ms. Hughes, who runs the carnival, and see if he can get Karen switched to another booth.

Cut to the Manning residence, where Grace is complaining over having to work with Eli. She says that Ms. Hughes is totally unfair and would never let her change it. Lily then sees the schedule herself, and sees that she has to work with Karen. Lily calls Naomi to switch jobs with her, while Grace calls a friend to share in the delight of her working with Eli.

The next day at the fair, Lily goes to her booth to only discover that Karen has been switched there as well. Rick and Jake are uneasy at first around each other, but then start getting along fine. The same goes with Eli and Grace.

Karen and Lily start getting along better, when two women (who Lily had seen gossiping earlier) come up to the bewildered Karen and ask if she's okay.

Grace get upset when two juniors tease her for trying to get Eli to like her. Grace abandons her booth and runs away crying.

Naomi comes to inform Lily that Grace has disappeared. Lily leaves the booth, and runs into the school.

Karen confronts Rick, and tells him she knows he's dating Lily. Karen is upset that the whole world knew except her.

Lily eventually finds Grace in a classroom, who tells her that she actually has a crush on Eli, and is upset that everyone knows. Grace believes she made a fool of herself.

Naomi tells Lily that the reason those women were being so rotten was that they were jealous of her surviving her failed marriage.

Rick appears, and says he doesn't understand what they did wrong. Lily thinks that the two of them might be acting immature, and not realizing how hard it is for their families.

Later, Lily walks toward Rick, with everyone watching. This signifies that she refuses to let the thought of others thinking badly of her get in her way, as Lily has done in past relationships.
