It's a hectic scene in the Manning's kitchen, with Lily helping her girls prepare for the school day. The phone rings -- it's Rick, and he tells Lily to meet him at 4:03. Grace, who's still upset over her mom dating, rushes Lily off the phone. Zoe appears to be well adjusted, just wanting to know is Rick has any kids her age.

At the bookstore, Lily is upset that she won't be able to see Rick that afternoon because his kids will be home. She doesn't want to go to her place, for fear of the kids walking in on Rick and her together again.

Outside of the high school, Grace is talking to her friends outside until she spots Jen and Eli nearby. Grace suggests to her friends they leave, but denies Eli having anything to do with it. Grace's two friends continue to chat, and start talking about mock trial. Grace asks about mock trial, and they explain, adding that Jen is the prosecuting attorney, so Grace should be judge.

Judy suggests that Lily and Rick meet at her apartment, and Lily rushes off to call him.

That afternoon, Rick and Lily arrive at Judy's, and start passionately kissing. Later, Judy calls to say she's coming back early, but no one hears the message because Rick and Lily are taking a bubble bath.

Eli and Jessie are doing homework at their dad's, when Karen calls saying she needs to pick them up early. Eli lies and tells his mom that Rick is out getting them dinner.

Lily relates that she couldn't bear to have sex in her sister's bed, so instead she and Rick make love on the floor. Judy suddenly walks in, to their astonishment. While Rick and Lily prepare to leave, Rick and Judy get into an awkward and confusing discussion about the movie Judy had walked out on. Judy tells the camera she hates Rick, and that night she couldn't sleep in her bed. Instead, she slept on the floor.

When Karen comes to pick up her kids, Eli again lies, saying his dad is in the shower.

At the Manning's, Grace tells her mom she has mock trial after school, and is being forced to go. She explains to her mom (in what seems like a hidden message to Lily) that people who break laws and who act like they can do anything they want and have no morals like children should be stopped.

Karen questions Naomi about Lily and if Rick is still seeing her.

Lily, sensing Judy doesn't like Rick, asks Judy at the store why she hasn't said anything about Rick except for the fact her left his scarf at her place.

Rick tells his co-worker David that Judy is self-absorbed and hostile.

Later that night, Grace tells Lily and Judy that she isn't doing mock trial, and that the prosecuting attorney is a slut. Lily rushes off to Rick's, telling the kids that she has to help Naomi with something.

At Karen's, Eli is filling in for his dad by making up answers for Jessie's "dad interview". Eli realizes that he left his World Cultures book (which he needs to study) at Rick's, and leaves to pick up the book.

Back at Lily's, Judy learns that Grace knows her mother is having sex with Rick, and Grace believes her mom is acting like a fool.

Eli walks into Rick's apartment, practically tripping over Rick and Lily's clothes on the floor. He hears his dad and Lily making love upstairs, and quickly leaves.

The next morning, Eli tells his mom that he stayed up late studying World Cultures.

Before class, Jen is reassuring Eli that he'll do fine on the test. Jen catches Grace glaring at her.

After Rick visits the bookstore, Judy tells Lily the reason she doesn't like Rick is she feels she can't trust him. Judy also says she won't lie for Lily anymore.

Jen comes up to Grace in-between classes, and asks why Grace has been giving her dirty looks. Grace says that the looks weren't directed toward her, and asks how the trial is going. Jen offers to read her opening argument to Grace.

Jessie is interviewing her dad, when the doorbell rings. It's Karen, who goes upstairs while Rick answers the phone. Jessie hides her work under the bed, and pulls out a large book, as Karen walks in the door.

At Karen's house, Eli is told by his mom that Jessie found his World Cultures book at Rick's and wants to know why he lied to her. Eli finds himself unable to explain.

Eli goes over to his dad's to pick up his book. Rick asks why he lied, and Eli tells him the whole story, and that he couldn't tell his mom what had happened. Rick says that he doesn't want Eli covering up for him anymore, but Eli says he has to. Eli emotionally insists that it's his responsibility to protect his mom because Rick's relationships upset her so much.

Karen and Rick meet at her office, and decide that Eli needs to know he doesn't have to protect his mom. When Rick gets up to leave, Karen reminds him not to forget his scarf. Rick has a flashback to when Karen gave him the scarf as a Christmas present, during happier times in their relationship.

Karen tells her son that he doesn't have to take care of her, and she doesn't need shielded from Rick's relationship. Eli tells his mom that there's nothing amazing about Lily, but he doesn't mean that to sheild her, it's just his opinion.

While out walking, Grace tells her mom that she gained a new friend today in school, but doesn't want to talk about it. Lily understands, and says there are some things that are okay not to discuss.
