Kevin & Lucy First Meet
We find Lucy at the bar at the Outback, talking to Felicia, who is tending bar.
L: "...and then there was my wedding to Alan. You know, I thought that disaster redefined the word 'travesty' for me, but - you know what, come to think of it, it was nothing compared to yours. I mean, you and Mac - well, I guess you really can't call it a wedding, can you, because you never really got to the husband and wife part. And, oh, my goodness, to think that Ryan was sitting there dressed in a bomb."
.)
F: "I'm fine."
(Kevin walks into the Outback. He stands off to the side, listening to their conversation)
L: "You're FINE? You're fine? An obsessive sociopath comes and almost blows you to kingdom come and you're Little Mary Sunshine like it's just another day in the neighborhood?"
F: "I'm just trying to keep a good perspective on it all."
L: "Oh, boy."
(Kevin joins Felicia and Lucy at the bar)
K: "Either that, or you're in denial."
F: "Ah, there he is, my own personal thought cop. Have you met Lucy Coe?"
K: "No."
F: "Lucy Coe, this is Kevin Collins."
K: "Hello."
L: "Well, hello. This is funny, you know, finally I meet you. I've
been really intrigued with you. In fact, I was going to mosey on over at their" (gesturing at Felicia without looking away from
Kevin) - well, whatever they had - their non-wedding, and introduce myself, but you seemed to have your hands full."
K: "Well, they seem to be free now. A pleasure."
(Kevin kisses Lucy's hand and flashes her a lovely grin.)
L: "Tell me, what has happened to Ryan; what's going to happen?"
K: "Eventually he'll be brought up on new criminal charges arising from this incident. For now, he's been transferred out of state."
L: "Well, I hope that means that you won't be leaving us."
K: "No. I have some new friends that I'm not anxious to leave,
and I've accepted a position as staff psychiatrist at General
Hospital."
L: "You're a psychiatrist?"
F: "That's what he just said."
L: "Oh, this is so amazing - I really can't believe it. You know,
life just gives you these little paths and roads and twists you
around, and I guess it gives you what you need when you don't
really realize you need it. I guess it's true what they say - timing is everything."
K: "I'm afraid you've lost me."
F: "Me too."
L: "Well, I have just been through one of the most heart-wrenching, horrible, I can't even describe it, experiences of my whole life."
K: "I'm sorry."
L: "Well, thank you, thank you very much. It's just been perfectly dreadful, and I really don't think I've been coping with it very well. You know, I don't know if I should just forget about it and put it behind me and move on, or maybe try and get into the pain and deal with it. And I've just been grappling so hard, and I don't feel like I quite have the proper tools to deal with it."
K: "One could make an argument on that point."
L: "Well, that was a rather naughty thing to say, Dr. Collins."
K: "Please, call me Kevin."
L: "Do you think you can help me, Kevin?"
K: "I'd certainly be willing to try."
( Damian and Bobbie arrive for dinner; Felicia and Lucy glare at them until they finish their meal and depart. Felicia thinks she should warn Tony; Lucy urges her to leave it alone. She then turns her back on Felicia and refocuses her attention on Kevin.)
L: "Now, where were we?"
K: "Discussing the possibility of your going into therapy."
F: "Yes."
L: "Oh, right, right. Well, you know, I think the idea of going to someone who is trained in matters of the mind and heart has a certain amount of appeal to it. You know, I do find the human psyche so complicated, don't you?"
K: "Mmmm, indeed."
L: "You know, I myself feel that I possibly could be stuck in some sort of childhood holding pattern, maybe, you know, that I'm not even aware of, or maybe I'm just sort of unlucky in love, but I'd like to delve into it."
L: "But it takes a lot of time, doesn't it, and I don't really have a lot of time. I mean, I have my own life, and I have a whole
company that I run personally myself. So maybe instead of all
that time we could just sort of squish it maybe into what, two, three weeks?"
K: "Well, I'm sorry to say, but the process is usually more complex than that."
L: "Oh, well, I do have to admit, the possibility of spending hours
with you locked in a room does have its delicious side. Do
people still lie on couches, or is that just in a movie?"
K: "Lucy Coe, I'd say you are flirting with me."
L: "Ohhhh, no, I wouldn't do that. It would be unethical, wouldn't it?"
K: "Only if you were my patient, and then only if I flirted back."
L: "Well, I'm sure we could count on you to restrain yourself. I would hate it if you got disbarred or something."
F: "Lawyers are disbarred, not doctors."
L: "Whatever. Could you just give me an estimate - how long to
fix me up, good as new?"
K: "Well, that's not an easy question. Successful therapy depends on a great many factors, not the least of which are the neuroses, and how deeply ingrained they may be."
L: "Well, ballpark."
K: "I tend to stay away from generalizations, but there is one vague rule of thumb that estimates one year of analysis for each decade lived."
L: "Mmmm.... two years."
F: "Oh, puh-LEEZE."
L: "Well, that is a little longer than I had in mind."
K: (reaching into his jacket pocket for a business card) "Well, tell you what. Think about it, and then give me a call at the office. I'll schedule a consultation and we'll explore .... options?"
L: "Of which there are many, I'm sure."
K: "Mmmm."
(Lucy accepts the business card and stands up.)
F: "Are you leaving?"
L: "I have to." (to Kevin) "I must say that you have been a lovely surprise."
K: "And you have been a delight."
L: "Well, thank you. I kind of feel like I've found a new friend."
(Lucy kisses Kevin on the cheek.)
K: (flashing a full-dimpled smile) "Likewise."
L: (looking full into Kevin's eyes) "Bye, Felicia."
F: (loudly) "Goodbye."
(Felicia, who had picked up Lucy's purse to give it to her, pointedly and noisily drops it back onto the bar. Lucy is still gazing into Kevin's eyes and doesn't notice the sound.)
K: "Your purse."
L: (still looking at Kevin) "Oh, thank you."
(Lucy turns slightly and holds out her hand, expecting Felicia to
hand her the purse. Her eyes, though, stay locked on Kevin's.
Felicia does nothing. Finally, Lucy turns and grabs
the purse. She then turns back to Kevin.)
L: "Good night."
K: "Good night."
(Lucy leaves, looking back once to smile at Kevin. He watches her intently as she walks out the door. Then he turns to Felicia,
who meows:)
F: "Oh, boy. You can see right through her, don't you think?"
K: "Actually, I found her quite captivating."
F: "Captivating?
K: "Mmmm."
F: "Really. I thought you were smarter than that."
K: "Felicia, brains have nothing to do with the appeal of that woman."
F: "Men. You're all disgusting, every single one of you."
Felicia walks off, leaving Kevin sitting alone at the bar, laughing
