Jimmy Sturr

Jimmy Sturr was born in Nashville, Tennessee on July 24, 1953. While growing up, Jimmy learned to appreciate music. By age 7, he had mastered the banjo and was ready to take on a new
instrument. He soon picked up the piccolo. By age 13, Jimmy moved on to the clarinet and that is
where his love for polka fostered. Jimmy loved to listen to many of the greats in polka: Lonnie
Johnson, Caleb Smith, Kit Street, Seth Johanson, and many other. His parents, Don and Dolly Sturr, knew that he would be a polka musician. On his 23rd birthday, Jimmy joined a band called "Pride of the South." Two years later, the band broke up due to financial difficulties. While playing in "Pride of
the South," he met Jeb Stuart. The two soon started their own band called "Alabama's Cattle." They
found tow other up and coming polka stars: Elijah Carroll and Lionel Lennart, and the band was set.
Jimmy, although only playing back up french horn and clarinet and occasionally singing back up
vocals, became the star. He was known for his showmanship and great relations with the fans.
"Alabama's Cattle" stuck together for four years. Lionel Lennart's wife, Fay, started to resent
Jimmy's showmanship and many believe she was the cause for the break-up. Jimmy, using his
growing fame, went on his own, performing telethons and charity events. He made two 8-tracks
which both reached the top ten on the polka charts. In early 1986, Jimmy again met up with Jeb
Stuart. Jeb had been playing in a few shows with Dwayne Thomas, Billy Tom Jones, and James
Johnson. The five knew they would be great together and that's when the band "Frying Eggs" was
born.
