Nick questions his ability to continue in the police force when he puts a woman's life at risk. Nick is forced to question his ability as a police member after backing a distraught mother's application for an intervention order. The woman explains that her husband is abusing his step-daughter and Nick has no problem with supporting her application. However, after her husband breaches the order, Dash begins to suspect that the woman's claims may not be based in fact.
Tom orders an investigation into the matter and despite Nick and Dash butting heads at every turn, the truth is uncovered. The claim was a lie; the woman's daughter was never abused. Nick realises that he is not the judge of character he thought; did he ignore evidence because of his prejudices?
While Nick is still reeling from the discovery, the woman's sister arrives at the station. She wants to take out an intervention order against her ex-boyfriend. Nick is reluctant to put another man's reputation at risk without substantiating evidence. Instead of applying for an order, Nick warns the man to steer clear of his ex. However, this doesn't seem to do the trick. The girl is found the next day, unconscious at the bottom of a cliff, her abseiling rope torn in half. When tests return from forensic, Nick must face the terrible truth - the girl is the victim of attempted murder.
Nick goes straight to her ex-boyfriend and wants him charged with the attack. Unfortunately, there is not enough evidence and PJ is forced to let him walk.
Next, Maggie receives a call from Zoe - the man is holding his ex-girlfriend hostage in hospital. He has attached himself to her spinal halo with a pair of handcuffs and is demanding justice. Nick must devise a way to bring the man down without endangering the girl further. But even if he manages to save her, is the damage to his career already done?
