This web page is my tribute to an 80's classic - Red Dwarf. The BBC2's longest running sitcom it also has the distinction of being the worlds first space-age sitcom!

Red Dwarf originated as a sketch for BBC Radio 4's Son of Cliché, but owed much to such Sci-Fi screen vehicles as Dark Star, Quark and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. This then is the tale of inter-galactic, curry-eating slob Dave Lister, played by Craig Charles, the last human alive. Dave is a twenty-third century Liverpudlian with a penchant for derivatives of the expletive Smeg. He is the sole survivor of a radiation leak aboard the mining vessel Red Dwarf. Brought out of a three-million year long stasis by ship's computer Holly, Lister was given company in the form of a hologram of his ex-boss, the pompous Arnold Rimmer played by Chris Barrie. Also aboard was a cat, a narcissistic, Little Richard-type dude who had evolved in the ships hold from Lister's pet feline, and was a humanoid except for fangs and six nipples! By series 3, Lister is joined by Kryten the subservient android played by David Ross/Robert Llewlyn. This then made up the motley crew of the Red Dwarf.

The crew of the mining vessel Red Dwarf...

Red Dwarf first appeared on BBC2 in 1988 and has seen a total of 8 series with some 48 x 30 minute episodes screened to date. Created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor rumour has it that there will be a 9th series which given its somewhat cult following and rather parochial appeal here in the UK is surprising to say the least. Despite at least a couple of attempts, the show has never succeeded in the US but then they do have the original - Star Trek now don't they! The first two series were very much a sci-fi version of the Young Ones with school- boy humour very much in evidence. By the third series the show had started to develop a character all of its own which, with the infusion of new talent, helped the show win a World Television Award.

Red Dwarf Desktop Theme

The two Red Dwarf Desktop Themes featured here are the work of two Red Dwarf enthusiast who have put together half-decent themes using the sights and sounds from the show. Both themes suffered from poor installation instructions and lacked screensaver and start-up/shutdown screens.

has added these and reduced the zip file size by using .jpg compression for the desktop wallpaper. The sound files have all been saved using a common format (11.025 MHz 8-bit) and easy-to-use install instructions added to help the user realise a Red Dwarf experience on their very own desktop.

Theme 1 - Originally by Filip Spanberg

This enhanced Red Dwarf Desktop Theme features themed start-up and shutdown screens, hi-colour (24-bit) desktop wallpaper, animated cursor set and themed desktop icons. Also included are new windows sounds taken from Red Dwarf episodes. I have added a full feature screensaver made using Screen Saver Deluxe. To install the theme, screensaver and start-up/shutdown screens automatically use WinZip to extract to C:\ ensuring you select All Files and Use Folder Names from the options available. A Readme file is available for further installation instructions.
