The Rules

Chuck Jones on Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner, from Chuck Amuck:

"These are some of the rules we obeyed in the Coyote-Road Runner series"

Rule 1. The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going "Beep-Beep!"
Rule 2. No outside force can harm the Coyote - only his own ineptitude or the failure of the Acme products.
Rule 3. The Coyote could stop anytime - if he were not a fanatic. (Repeat: "A fanatic is one who redoubles his effort when he has forgotten his aim." - George Santayana)
Rule 4. No dialogue ever, except "Meep-Meep!"
Rule 5. The Road Runner must stay on the road - otherwise, logically, he would not be called Road Runner.
Rule 6. All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters - the Southwest American desert.
Rule 7. All materials, tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from the Acme Corporation.
Rule 8. Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote's greatest enemy.
Rule 9. The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures.
(Rule 10.) The audience's sympathy must remain with the Coyote.

In these few and Simpel rules lies the root of all evil. After Wile E. read these rules he just ran out of the room, frantically holding up signs. I didn't read them, but I think you can imagine what they said..... After recomposing himself he told me that he had heard rumours of Chuck Jones not liking him, but seeing the evidence just took him completely by surprise. The following is the literal transcript of what Wile E. said (well....held up on signs) after reading these rules: "Usually I presented my new plan to catch the Roadrunner to Chuck for his approval and tips. He'd take my plan to the backroom and, after a while, come out smirking. Then he'd always say the same thing:"Wile E, you go and order the stuff you need from my friends at ACME, I'll just go and get the camera **>Knowing Wink<**". Then we'd shoot the scene. And somehow......things just never worked out. Well, I guess we all know why now. I already filed a lawsuit against ACME, and I'm now thinking about filing one against Chuck.
