Seattle Mariners Vice President of Baseball Operations Woody Woodward announced today that the Mariners have signed free agen Mike Blowers to a triple-A contract. Blowers has also been invited to Major League spring training camp with the Mariners.
Blowers, 31, appeared in 92 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, his first in the National League. He hit .265 with 19 doubles and 38 RBI before a torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn lateral cartilage in his left knee ended his season. The injury occurred vs. San Diego on July 17 while he was running the bases. Blowers had surger Aug 2 and was out the remainder of the season.
Blowers had a team-high 19-game hitting streak June 18-July 6 and hit .833 (5x6) with a double and 10 RBI with the bases loaded. In his M.L. career, he is 26x56 (.464) with six grand slams and 70 RBI with the bases loaded. He hit .333 (32x96) in his final 26 games.
Blowers has played in the Majors for eight seasons, (1989-96), including spending 1992-96 with the Mariners. He had the best season of his career in 1995, when he helped Seattle to the playoffs. Blowers hit .257 with 24 doubles, 23 home runs and 95 RBI in 134 games. He has also played for the New York Yankees (1989-91) in his big league career. In 545 M.L. games, Blowers is a .259 hitter with 86 doubles, 60 home runs and 267 RBI.
