Chapter 6
Brenda: I've had my hands in your pockets before.
Sonny: Oh yeah, when my pants were on or off? (thoroughly enjoying this)
Brenda: You were there, I think you know the answer.
Sonny: I may have some, would you like to check?
Brenda: You can check yourself.
Sonny: (Smile going away) All right… here's some. (He hands them to her, their
hands touch, he holds her fingers and then she lets go)
Brenda: Thanks. (She reaches into the wall that Sonny is standing in front of
and pulls out a lantern)
Sonny: How did you know that was there?
Brenda: My father used to… never mind, there are lanterns at the entrance of
every tunnel.
Sonny: How many are there?
Brenda: Near 20 I would say.
Sonny: You've been through all them?
Brenda: Yeah. Now Sonny, you have to pay close attention to where I am taking
you. I don't know how well Maslow knows his way around here, so, you have to
watch and remember where you are.
Sonny: You know I am good with directions.
Brenda: This isn't a game Sonny, this is a whole different story, different set
of rules.
Sonny: I know that.
Brenda: You don't know Maslow.
Sonny: I think I do.
Brenda: You don't. Listen to me. I'm going to take you to the furthest entrance
from the main house, it's the only one that my father didn't know existed. It's
going to take you into a log cabin about 15 or so miles from here. When you go
and get Luke and Jason, take them through that entrance.
Sonny: Back to the same room we left from?
Brenda: No, there is a different route that I won't have time to show you.
Listen, just go through that entrance, I'll show you where to make the first
turn. Now, when you get closer to the house, you'll see wires on the walls. It's
just electric stuff.
Sonny: You don't think the tunnels are guarded?
Brenda: I don't know. When we go through, don't talk to me, just watch what is
around you. And if we run into trouble, don't worry about me, you get yourself
out. This tunnel, just keep following it straight. You'll get to the end of the
tunnel, and it will look like you can't go any further, but you can, just look
on the wall and there will be a picture of a little girl, dressed in yellow.
Directly above that, is an opening, jump up, climb over and that tunnel will
lead you into the cabin.
Sonny: I'm not leaving you alone.
Brenda: you will have no choice. When you get out of here, go to Luke and when
they come back, do not come with them. Hide somewhere in town, keep Renaldo or
someone with you, but do not come here.
Sonny: Why are you telling me what to do?
Brenda: For once in your life, listen to me, please.
Sonny: Let's just go, we are wasting time.
Brenda: Sonny…
Sonny: Let's go.
Brenda: Take my hand. (He holds onto it tight and they begin to walk through the
twisted tunnels in silence)
