PART ONE
Shirley Holmes sat down at the breakfast table and picked up the
newspaper. She was just about to take a bite out of her toast when
she
heard someone cough. She looked up, and saw her mother Joanna Holmes
standing in front of her looking disturb.
Shirley smiled to herself, feeling secretly happy that her mother was
back, and instead of looking at her picture wondering if she was alive
or not, was looking at he mother and was able to talk to her.
"Shirley," Joanna said, fidgeting a bit.
"Yes Mom?" Shirley answered. Joanna sat down and closed her eyesbreifly.
"Shirley- your father and I have talked and we both agreed"
"I'm not in trouble am I?" Shirley interrupted raising her eyebrows.
"No no no" Joanna assured her, "It's just that after our discussion
last night, your father and I have agreed that you aren't social
enough. I mean, it's good that you have a few good friends, but you
don't communicate well enough with those outside of your circle. We
thought about it and we think that you should go to your Halloween
dance."
"Is that ALL?" Shirley asked feeling relieved, because she was
planning on going anyway.
"No..." Joanna said, "We figured that you were planning on going
anyway, so we want to take this a step further- Shirley we heard that
during the dance, they elect two people from your school to be the
Scream King and Queen of the dance. Why don't you try running?"
Shirley's jaw dropped open.
"No! I appreciate this and all, but no, I don't think so."
A smirk played on Joanna's lips.
"If you don't you have a new curfew as of tonight- 8:00 pm. I hate
to
do that to you Shirley but this is for your own good."
Shirley's jaw dropped open for the second time that morning. A curfew?
What if there's a mystery I have to solve or something? Shirley
thought to herself, knowing it was absolutely impossible to live with
a curfew of eight o'clock she sighed.
"Fine Mom." She said sourly, then Shirley realized something. "Whatabout
a"
"Date?" Joanna finished for her, "I talked to Mrs. Sawchuk today-
delightful woman- we both agreed that you and Boris would go together."
Joanna then left the room. Shirley scraped her jaw off the floor for
the third time and picked up her toast, and dumped it in the garbage,
she had suddenly lost her appetite.
* * *
"Shirley wait up!" Bo Sawchuk yelled, running up to Shirley.
"Hey," Shirley greeted him, "I have to run for Scream Queen. My Mom
is
forcing me, isn't that great... ugh. I think that I will ask Alicia
to
be my publicity manager. This is so stupid, but anyway, Vote Shirley."
"Of course I will." Bo chuckled and then froze, "Um, Shirley, Molly
is
running for Scream Queen too... she really really wants this crown-
anyways.. whew... this should be good."
"Oh god," Shirley muttered, "What's going to happen next?"
"I have something to ask you Shirley." Bo said suddenly. "Um do you
want to go to the uh Dance?"
Shirley looked at Bo and then realized something, Bo did not know that
Shirley knew he was supposed to ask her.
"Yeah, I have to go though." Shirley said, Bo sighed.
"I mean, do you want to go to the dance with ME? It wouldn't be a date
because we're friends and all." Bo said shrugging.
"I thought you were going to ask Felicia Torannce." Shirley said,
raising her eyebrows, referring to Bo's latest lust interest.
"Well, inconceivable forces drive me to ask you!" Bo said shrugging.
"Yeah, my Mom and your Mom." Shirley said smiling at a shocked Bo.
"You mean you know?" Bo said.
"Yeah, Mom came in this morning while I was eating breakfast and broke
the news to me.""I'm that bad?" Bo teased her.
"No- but Scream Queen I mean c'mon!" Shirley laughed.
"Hey! Football star here! I can rak up the votes on the football team
if you want." Bo said.
"Good- I was talking to Mom before I left for school, I think she
really really wants me to win. I dunno, sometimes it's wierd having
her around. You know what? Last night I overheard Grams talking to
them, she said she was thinking of moving out now that Mom's back.
And
sometimes I think that Mom still thinks that I am nine or something.
She points out all these shows and movies that I used to love before
she disappeared and tells me that my favorite show is on. I hate
having to remind her that I am thirteen- it's wierd."
"Wow. Your Grams is gonna move out? That really really sucks. But your
happy otherwise?" Bo asked looking Shirley straight in the eye.
"Yeah, I'm really happy, yesterday we went shopping, and this time
I
didn't go alone or with dad, or with Grams, with my MOM. It felt
really good." Shirley said happily. Bo smiled at her, glad finally
that they could put this whole mystery behind them, and although he
wasn't sure that there would be one bigger than the disappearance of
her mother, it was a nice feeling."So do you wanna go to the dance?"
Bo asked.
"Sure," Shirley said. Suddenly, Alicia Gianelli ran up between themboth.
"Hi! What's going on? What'd I miss?" Alicia asked in her hyper way.
"I'm running for Scream Queen? Wanna help with publicity?"
"Sure! Hi Bo!" Alicia said quickly."Hi and Bye!" Bo said walking away.
"Pick me up at 7:00!" Shirley yelled.
"It's a da- See you at 7:00!" Bo said, he frowned and walked away.
"Wait wait wait a second!" Alicia said, "Did he almost say date? Are
you two going out on a date? Are you two going out together? Hey! Did
you just say that you wanna run for Scream Queen? Who are you and what
did you do with the Shirley everyone KNOWS?"
* * *
Shirley rummaged through her locker looking for her math textbook when
she heard a familiar voice."So I hear that you are running for Scream
Queen."
Shirley turned around and gave a sacharin smile to Molly Hardy.
"Gee, news gets out fast." Shirley said.
"Not really, Alicia told me. Hardly anyone knows you're running. I
hope it stays that way- not that you'd win anyway."
"Molly, I am so sure that everyone by now knows what a FAKE you are
so
it won't be that hard to rak up the votes."Molly glared at Shirley.
"Look Holmes, I don't care if you get more votes then me, really I
don't. And number two, I would win anyway, we forget, I have my ways"
"Who did you blackmail this time?" Shirley interrupted. Molly glared
at her again.
"Don't double cross me, I will get the crown. If you even try so much
as to make me lose that crown I swear you will regret it!" And with
that Molly walked away. Shirley smirked, the bell rang and the halls
emptied fastly, Shirley felt glad that she had a free period to work
on her math homework.
Suddenly, a sharp scream pierced the hall and she saw a figure run
past her in black.
"What the-" Shirley slammed her locker door shut and turned around.
"AAH!" She gasped, Bo laughed."Why are you so uptight?" He asked.
"You didn't see or hear the scream?" Shirley asked breathlessly. Bo
just looked at her and they raced down the hall to where Shirley saw
the figure. When she got there, nothing was there.
"I can't believe there was nothing there! I swear I saw it!" Shirley
insisted as she and Bo entered her house.
"Are you sure you didn't just imagine it?" Bo asked as Shirley handed
him a drink.
"I'm a Holmes, I don't imagine things." Shirley said, taking a sip
ofher coke.
"It was probably just Molly, she said don't double cross her right?
So
she was just yanking your chain."
"Maybe." Shirley muttered. "Hi Mom." She said as Joanna entered theroom.
"Hello! How are you Boris?" Joanna asked, Bo cringed at the sound ofhis
name.
"Fine thanks. Um, just call me Bo." Bo said, Joanna nodded.
"So are you going to the dance.. Bo?" Joanna asked.
"Yeah, with your daughter if it's alright with you."
"Why of course!" Joanna said looking pleasent.
"Cut it out!" Shirley groaned, "We both know you set us up."
"Shirley," Joanna scolded then she laughed, "I'm going out to the
grocery store. I'll be back in an hour or so. Don't forget to feedWatson."
"Will you be coming straight home? Are you going somewhere
afterwards?" Shirley asked, looking a little bit worried.
"Shirley," Joanna said patiently as though this happened a lot, "I'll
be coming home. Don't worry. I'll be coming home." Joanna left.
Bo gave a sideways glance at Shirley. "Are you alright?" He askedsuspiciously.
"I'm fine." Shirley said bitterly. But Bo was to smart for her thistime.
"Your mom said that she was just going to grocery store- she is not
going to disappear."Shirley could only look at him.
"So did the football team say they'd vote for me?" She asked, changing
the subject."You know, avoiding the subject doesn't help"
Shirley interrupted Bo with the classic glance that always means, "Be
quiet." Bo cleared his throat.
"Yeah, except three who wanna vote for Molly. I think she blackmailed
them- They looked awful worried when I asked them to vote for you."
Shirley smiled at Bo greatfully."Thanks for doing this for me."
Bo shrugged as if to say, "No biggie" and they both took a sip oftheir
coke.
"So," Shirley said, "You have to dress up right? What are you going
to
dress up as?""Dracula- With blonde hair- Mom won't let me dye it.""Cool."
"What about you?" Bo asked."I don't know.""I know!" Bo said. "Go as
Mina."
"You mean, Dracula's victem? I saw that play. That was who Mina was
right?" Shirley asked."Yeah. Go as her." Bo insisted.
"Sure," Shirley agreed, "I have no ideas otherwise. Now I just have
to
find an old fashioned dress. So anyway, about what I saw"
"Shirley what are you on? There was nothing there!" Bo interrupted
sounding exasperated.
"Am I known to imagine things Bo?" Shirley sighed, "There is no
logical explanation- unless it WAS Molly yanking my chain."
"It probably was." Bo assured her, but deep down inside, Shirley did
not feel so assured.
