Bo sat in a chair impatiently at his home staring at a cell-phone.
"Ring darn you!" He muttered.
Suddenly Alicia burst through the door.
"Bo you won't believe this!!!! Shirley's gone!!!! They think she's
been kidnapped!!!"
* * *
Shirley was holding her cell-phone and staring at Carson.
"I need to tell you something important, Shirley it's" Carson began
but Shirley was not listening and interrupted.
"What a stupid cover up for a motive." She muttered under her breath.
"What? The scary movies? Dad thought up that, and Dad's nuts so..."
Carson gave a weak half smile, as though this showed part of his sense
of humor.
"Motives are quite important, I mean a valid reason, yes, but horror
movies? No." Shirley declared.
Suddenly footsteps rang through an outside hallway. Shirley froze and
looked at Carson who was checking his watch.
"It's about two. He's gonna make the ransom video for your father I
think."
Shirley froze, and handed Carson the cell phone."Keep this for me!"
She said.
Suddenly Carson's father entered the room, without his ski mask, Carson
was beared somewhat a resemblance to his father, who was a little on the
hefty side and face was aged with lines.
"Get up." He commanded Shirley, then he nodded at Carson, who stood
up too.
Carson walked over to his father who put his arm around him. Carson
looked at Shirley sadly.
"Wha...?" She blinked.
"She try anything?" Carson's dad asked, Carson looked at Shirley and
handed his father the cell phone, who in return, smashed it against the
wall in tiny pieces. Shirley winced, wondering if she would ever be able
to explain THAT one to her father.
"You're in on this together." Shirley said dully.
"Well, after the first one, we couldn't make the same mistake twice, could we? Carson and I, we sat down and talked it out. I could be a psychotically nuts father who turns on his son. I shove Carson in here with you, you two make friends and he gives me what you were planning on using against me. It worked too I see." Carson's father looked at the shattered cell phone.
"What about your wife?" Shirley asked. Carson's face turned to pure terror.
"My wife? My wife is dead." He said flatly, then an unexpected rage ran through his eyes and he picked up the chair and threw it. Shirley moved quickly, narrowly missing something that would make her sore in the morning.
"SHE LEFT US! YOU HEAR? SHE LEFT US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Carson's father
bellowed. Shirley looked at Carson with disbelief.
"I told her that if she didn't stay I would- and she didn't- so I did."
Carson's father looked wildly at Shirley who was rapidly filling
in the blanks.
"You killed her?" She whispered.
"I did. I took the knife and I-" Carson's father looked at Shirley,
"I think you know too much."
Carson's father advanced, Shirley backed away, a chair flew down on
Carson's father's back, he fell to the ground but was still awake.
"C'mon!" Carson yelled, grabbing Shirley's hand, who tried to jump
over Carson's father, but he grabbed her ankle and she fell to the ground.
Shirley struggled to get up, but the man had a firm grip.
"Do you like play sports?" Shirley asked suddenly, still struggling.
"Yeah." Carson's father replied, grunting, trying to hold Shirley's ankle.
"Well, this time you can play the ball!" Shirley kicked Carson's Dad
in the head, hard enough to release his grip, but not hard enough to hurt
him severely.
Carson helped Shirley up and ran out of the room, which was actually
a small building, they ran down a paved walkway and into the forest.
The stopped when they couldn't see Carson's Dad. Shirley gasped for
air.
"I didn't know I could run that fast!" Carson marveled.
"Yeah, well, fear is a great motivator." Shirley replied, then she looked at Carson, "How could you do that? I trusted you. Kind of."
"I tried to tell you!" Carson insisted, "But you interrupted me! I didn't
want this to happen! Dad was going to make your ransom video but you had
to mention Mom! Okay, I lied, Mom didn't die of cancer. She was having
an affair!!! Alright? She was. She was leaving Dad because he had anger
problems, and that didn't help when she told him. I was at school when
it all happened. Dad blew up and he- you know the rest. When I got home,
he took me out the door, telling me the whole
thing and saying that we would be leaivng town and wouldn't be back
for a long time. The cops have been after Dad for years!"
"Why didn't you just turn your father in yourself? You could have gone to a foster home, or something! At least until your Dad got released!" Shirley's voice began to rise.
"YOU DON'T GET RELEASED WHEN YOU MURDER SOMEONE! DON'T YOU GET IT? I'M ALL HE HAS!" Carson screamed.
Suddenly a bush snapped. Shirley and Carson looked around, Carson's
father appeared behind some trees.
"There you are. Kids, I didn't mean to scare you. Come back." His voice
was milky and his face was welcoming, but Carson's Father's intentions
were plane to see, by the glint of the knife he was holding.
"God run!" Carson muttered. Shirley and Carson ran until a bridge to the main highway was visible, when they reached the middle of it, Shirley's foot slipped and she fell, she turned around slowly, Carson's father was standing above her, smiling maniaclly with the knife above him....
"PUT THE KNIFE DOWN." A voice behind her said,
Shirley heard a click and sighed with relief.
