...... Review: It's been a while
since I actually saw this episode. I watched the rerun tonight, and
forgot how much I actually enjoyed it. It didn't stand out at first,
sandwiched between the inferior "I Only Have Eyes for You" and the incredible
"Becoming" two parter, but it actually stands on its own as a pretty decent
episode.
To begin with, I actually liked Buffy in this
episode. She was funny. She really wasn't funny, except when
she was possessed, since "Bad Eggs." Everything was so damn serious,
and this was a nice break. No guilt, no mention of Jenny, and not
even much of a reaction to Angelus' attacking Gage. The Angelus quotient
was low also, which I appreciate.
Cordelia got a chance to show her sweet side.
For everyone who thinks Cordy/Xander is just a passing fancy, this episode
proves that it is real. Finally, someone on the show acknowledges
that Xander is an attractive man.
Xander was his usual mix of dorky and brave,
which always blends nicely. I didn't think he particularly stood
out in this episode, though. He was a strong part of the ensemble.
The standout of this episode was Willow.
For the second time in a row we see her as strong and confident.
She's been progressing that way all season, but it was only since Jenny
died that she's really come out. This is such a change from
the Willow in bad clothes who had no self-confidence in "WttHM." This,
along with "IOHEFY," have elevated Willow past Cordelia and Jenny to my
favorite character. I heard there is a lot more of this in season
three, and I look forward to it.
All and all, the episode didn't seem to fit
in slot it was given, because it didn't blend well with either "IOHEFY"
or "Becoming." It should have been put in before Innocence, (Spike
could easily have done Angelus' part). But in and of itself, it was decent.
It didn't inspire a long review, but I enjoyed watching it. 7/10
