Scooby Doo On Zombie Island (1998)

A beautiful picture of the Zombie Island Book

It's been a long time between mysteries for Mysteries Inc. The gang has been cast asunder to pursue their seperate careers. However, when an interesting story in the Lousiana Bayou reaches Fred and Daphne (no, they don't get married), they reunite the gang to once again solve another mystery, involving the ghost of Moonscar the pirate, and his army of zombies. For once, the ghosts are real... Starring Billy West (Stimpy, and occasionally Ren) as the irrepressable Shaggy (Billy West? What happened to Casey Kasem?), Scott Innes as Scooby, who doesn't actually sound that bad. Mary Kay Bergman, as the now even more beautiful Daphne. Frank Welker returns once more as the voice of straight man Freddy, who must have taken lessons from Shaggy and loosened up a bit. and B.J. Ward, the squeaky voice of Velma from "Bravo Dooby Doo" also makes a comeback. The video is alright, but the theme of Scooby Doo has always been to pick up the clues and unmask the cheesy villains. This time, they're running for their lives, which somehow isn't the same. The animation is brilliantly anime-style, with special effects and an involving storyline. I didn't think it was possible, but Scott Innes seems to sound identical to the late Don Messick. The only noticable change in voices is from Velma, who has improved her voice from earlier on. Billy West voices Shaggy really well, and so does Mary Kay Bergman. Fred seems more relaxed this time, and if you've watched A Pup Named Scooby Doo, you'll know what I mean. His character and Velma's are pushed to the limit. Strangley, Daphne seems more intelligent than anyone this time round. Shaggy and Scooby have retined their irreplacable sense of humor, along with their enormous appetite. The artwork is noticably different, with a more realistic looking gang, and work that only backgrounds were good enough for in 1969. Also involved are the voices of Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Swat Kats) as Snakebite Scruggs, Ed Gilbert (Batman: Animated Series, A Pup Named Scooby Doo, Scooby Doo and the reluctant werewolf [Narrator]) As Mr. Beeman, and Adrienne Barbeau (Batman: Animated Series, Batman: Gotham Knights) as Simone. It has it's moments. Lots of them, in fact. If you loved "A Pup Named Scooby Doo", or "Bravo Dooby Doo", run down to the local video agency and/or lie, cheat, steal, beg, kill, seriously damage. It doesn't matter. Rent it for a night. You'll love it, even if you are a fan of that disgusting SCrappy, who isn't in this (thank god).
