Wesley and Gunn looked up from their card game. Wesley raised an eyebrow. "Have to see what?"
"These!" Cordelia insisted, holding up a pair of bracelets. They were three inches wide and seemed to be made of unadorned steel.
"Whoa," Gunn said, his voice deadpan. "Cool."
Cordelia glared at him. "They are cool! Look," she went on, breaking one of them open along a hidden hinge. "How about that? Neat, huh?" Her smile lit up the room.
Wesley looked at her quizzically. "Uh, Cordelia," he began, "not to stifle your enthusiasm, but what exactly is so special about these bracelets?"
"Yeah," Gunn added. "I mean, they do look pretty nice, but they're not really your style, are they? Not flashy enough." Wesley nodded his agreement.
"They are sort of plain, I guess," Cordelia conceded. "I don't know, I just saw them in the shop and I had to have them. It's like they were calling to me or something." She shrugged, unconcerned. "Wanna see how they look?" she asked.
Gunn and Wesley exchanged a glance. "We would love to see how they look," Wesley said diplomatically.
"Great!" Cordelia quickly donned the bracelets and held out her arms for inspection. "Well?"
"Very nice," Wesley murmured, at a loss.
"Damn fine," Gunn said. "Turn around, let's see how they look from the back."
Cordelia started to turn, then looked at Gunn skeptically. "Why do you care how they look from the back?"
Gunn gestured helplessly. "I don't, okay? But cut me some slack. I'm tryin', here."
"And I do appreciate it," Cordelia assured him. "So much so that I don't even mind that all you really want to do is look at my butt. One view from the back, coming up."
She started to turn slowly, then felt an irresistible urge take over her body. She twirled quickly around in a circle, once, twice, three times. Soon she was spinning so fast she could barely see what was going on around her. She could vaguely discern Wesley and Gunn jumping to their feet in alarm, just as an electric shock traveled through her body. There was a flash of bright light, and suddenly she stopped spinning.
"What the hell was that?" she asked Wesley and Gunn, who were standing there gaping at her. "What?" she demanded. "What are you two looking at?"
Wesley started to speak, but couldn't seem to find the words. He gestured with his hand up and down her body.
Cordelia looked down and gasped. When she'd begun the weird spinning, she'd been wearing her favorite jeans and the sweater Xander had sent her for her birthday. Not to mention those killer boots she'd picked up at the vintage store the week before.
Now, she was wearing something straight out of a boy scout's daydreams. It was easily the ugliest bathing suit she'd ever seen. The torso was almost completely red, but a golden eagle design sprawled across her chest. At her waist was a gaudy golden belt. Some sort of rope, also gold, hung from it. Below the belt, the suit's design was navy blue with white stars. On her feet were a pair of ugly red boots with white stripes up the front.
"Oh, hell," she muttered. She looked up at Gunn and Wesley, both of whom were staring at her new attire. "Hey! Eyes up here," she snapped, pointing to her face. Both men blushed as they obeyed. "Better," she went on, slightly mollified. "Wesley, go get some books. We're going to figure out what just happened here if it kills you. Understand?"
"Absolutely," he assured her, and hurried off to the library.
That left Gunn. Cordelia looked over to him, and glared when she realized he was smirking. "What?" she demanded.
"Nothing," he said. "It's just, I can't figure out why this weird stuff keeps happening to you. You really are a wonder, woman."
