96th Precinct, Toronto circa 1995
Nick was sitting at his desk holding a sleeping Alex in his arms. It was 2am and the child was exhausted. She was also still afraid. For even in her sleep she was not relaxed as was evident by her fist cluching Nick's shirt tightly.
It had been a really emotionally draining night for Nick, and he would be glad when Schanke returned with the papers giving Nick protective custody rights so he could take Alex back to his loft, to Janette, and hopefully to some well earned sleep! As he waited for Schanke to return he watched the sleeping child and thought about all that had happened.
When Nick brought the child in, they first went to Capt. Cohen's office and Nick told the story of how Alex had wound up in the Raven and how he had found out about the murders. After a few minutes with Cohen, Nick took Alex to one of the interrogation rooms where Cohen, Schanke and he tried to sort out from what Alex could remember, (which wasn't much)and get some idea who was after her. They knew that the killers would be out for Alex and they wanted as much info as possible so they could protect her.
Natalie stood in the room oppposite the interrogation room and watched through the two-way mirror. She felt sorry for the little girl. And it was some comfort that Nick seemed to be one person that she appeared to trust. At least the child would have someone who would be able to look after her that she would be comfortable with. Alex sat on Nick's lap throughout the whole discussion, and kept her arms around Nick's neck, or gripping his shirt.
Capt Cohen looked at Alex and said, "Were these bad men friends of your mommy and daddy, Alexis?"
Alex looked at Capt Cohen and then at Nick to see if she should say anything, and then shook her head.
Capt. Cohen then asked her if the men told her mommy and daddy their names and she again shook her head. The Capt tried one more question, "Alexis, would you remember them if you saw them again?"
At this, Alex took a firm hold on Nick's shirt and buried her face in his chest. She began to cry softly. Nick put his arms around her and spoke to her softly, "Alexis, honey. It's ok. We just want to be sure that we get these bad men in jail. You want them in jail for hurting your mommy and daddy don't you?" And Nick looked down at the sobbing child. After a few minutes Alex moved her head from Nick's chest and looked up at him and said, "Will my mommy and daddy be coming back soon, Mr.Nick?"
This cut Nick as sure as if someone had sliced his chest with a knife. As it also did Capt Cohen and Schanke. Schanke looked at Nick and then at Alex and said, "Sweetheart, your mommy and daddy can't come back because they went to live in heaven. But they will be watching you to be sure you are safe."
Alex stared at Schanke for a few minutes, then she looked at Nick and then back at Schanke and said, "NO! My mommy and daddy will come back for me!" And then she looked at Nick and said, "I want to go home, Mr Nick and see my mommy!"
Nick looked at Alex and said softly, "How about we just stay here for awhile Alexis, and then soon, I will take you to my place and you can get some sleep?"
Alex looked at Nick and tightened her grip on his shirt. It was apparent that she completely trusted him and accepted whatever he told her, as if he were her own father.
And so it went, throughout the entire night and into the morning hours. Alex stayed close to Nick and either clung to his neck or held on to his shirt as if it were some kind of life-raft. And she would not let Nick leave her for even a minute. So Schanke had to get some of the info they needed sent out on the fax and also to get the court order of protective custody for Nick. There was only one time that Alex left Nick and that was when she suddenly looked at Nick and said, "I have to go potty." One of the police women that was working nearby came over and through a little coaxing managed to get Alex to take her hand and led her to the women's bathroom. This gave Nick a few minutes to make a few calls, and talk to Schanke. They did not have much to go on. All they knew is that the men were white, approximately in their late 30's and one of them had a large scar on his left cheek. Alex was too small to give them very much information. But she did remember the shooting which was the one thing Nick wished she would not have remembered.
And so a few minutes later, Alex was walking toward Nick, holding on to the police lady's hand, and when she spotted Nick, she broke free from the woman and ran to Nick's desk. She again crawled onto his lap and clung onto his neck. Nick soothed her by holding her close to him and letting her know that he was not going to leave her. Apparently some of what Schanke had said had made sense to the little girl and she somehow knew that her parents had left and wouldn't be coming back. And she was afraid that Nick would leave her too. And so she clung to him. And that is where she stayed for the next hour. Before too long, though she began to get very sleepy and soon her her head began to drop closer to Nick's chest, until she was fast asleep. Somewhat relaxed, Alex's breathing was steady and regular, but she still clung fiercly to Nick's shirt. She wanted to be sure he did not leave her too!
Nick looked up and saw Schanke coming towards him. When Schanke got near to the desk, Nick put his fingers to his mouth in a gesture to be quiet and Schanke saw that the little girl was asleep. He waited until he got to the desk and handed Nick the papers. In a whisper he said, "Here are the orders Nick. Oh, and by the way, we got some new info. A couple of other people came in awhile ago and said that they saw a Blue Chevy Blazer come around the corner in front of the Raven a few minutes after the shooting and sped away with two white men in it. They said the car was damaged on the driver's side with a large dent near the driver's door. And get this, they said on the top of the car was painted a Nazi flag!"
Nick looked at Schanke and said softly, "That is weird. But at least it won't be that hard to spot. Maybe this will be easier than we thought." And then he shifted his position slightly and made a quick phone call to his loft to see if Janette had made it there with "child supplies". Janette answered the phone.
"Oui Bonjour."
"Janette, did you get all the stuff we need?" Nick said into the phone.
"Oui, mon Nichola. I managed to get quite a few things from Cindy, one of our waitresses who has two little girls. How is Alexis?" Janette said, with a very concerned voice
"She is sleeping right now, and I hate to wake her up." Nick responded as he looked down at Alex sleeping in his arms. "But I have the papers I need and want to get her home as soon as possible. So I guess I'll have to wake her." Then he continued, "We will be home soon" and then he said lowly, "And Janette? Thank you for helping Alexis. . . . and me."
Janette smiled and said back softly, "You and Alexis are very welcome mon coeur! I will wait for you to return. Goodbye"
Nick hung up the phone and Schanke said, "Is Janette gonna help you with Alexis?"
Nick looked at Schanke and said rather sheepishly, "Yeah. You know that I am not that good with kids, Schanke."
Schanke looked at Nick and raised an eyebrow. "Oh really? Remember your experience with Lisa? You did a great job taking care of her and she obviously was well cared for. And Alexis seems to trust you completely. You are not as inexperienced as you think, Knight! And.." Schanke paused for a moment looking deeply into Nick's eyes and then went on, "You will make a hell of a Father, someday!"
Nick smiled at Schanke and said, "Thanks Schanke. I appreciate that." And then he began to gently shake Alex. "Alexis? Wake up. sweetheart."
Alex opened her eyes in fear and then she realized that it was Nick who was talking to her and she said sleepily, "Ok, Mr. Nick."
Nick smiled and said, "We're going to leave now, Alexis and I'm going to take you back to my place. Would you like that?"
Alex sat up straighter and smiling said, "Yes, Mr. Nick. I would. And I'm hungry."
Nick smiled and said, "Ok, when we get home, maybe we can find something for you to eat." Then he picked her up and sat her on the edge of the desk but Alex would not let go of his shirt. Nick touched her face gently and said, "Alexis, I'm just going over here to get my jacket and then we will go home, ok? But you have to let go of my shirt for me to get my jacket, sweetheart."
Alex wasn't sure that she wanted to let go, but then she saw something in Nick's blue eyes and she slowly unclosed her fist at his shirt. Nick walked over to the coat rack and got his suit jacket and put it on. Then he went back to the desk and picked up the papers, putting them in the jacket pocket. He picked up Alex and saying goodbye to Schanke turned to leave.
Schanke put his hand on Alex's face and Nick stopped for a minute. Schanke looked at the little girl and said, "Don't worry, sweetie, Nick will take real good care of you!"
Alex smiled at Schanke and put her head next to Nick's shoulder and said in a soft voice, "Goodbye Mr. Schanke." And Nick and Alex left the PD with Schanke watching. He shook his head as he saw Natalie approaching. When Natalie came to where he was he said, "Poor little kid. Seeing her mother and father killed right in front of her. That trauma will stay with her forever."
Natalie watched Nick and Alex leave and turned to Schanke and said, "Yeah. But at least she has Nick for a little while. He will do all he can to help her Schanke. He has a good heart." <And perhaps he can use his incredible vampire skills to make her 'forget'>
"Yeah, that is very true, Natalie." Schanke said turning back to Dr. Lambert. "What ya got for us?"
Natalie looked at Schanke and said, "Finished the autopsy and the bullet was a 32 caliber. Tore through the skull and the brain scattering tissue everywhere! Tony and Sherry didn't have a change. The bullet entered at point blank range. There was a good deal of gun powder on the skin and death occurred immediately." Natalie then gave Schanke another folder. "This is something Matt Kennedy sent to you. Your not gonna like this."
Schanke opened the folder and then frowned. "Great! There are no living relatives. None! That poor child will be sent to a foster home." And looking up Schanke said, "Well, Nick has his job cut out for him."
Nick's loft:
About ten minutes later, Nick arrived at the loft with Alex. When he opened the door Janette was there to greet them. At first Alex didn't remember Janette, and clung fiercely to Nick, even during her meal. Janette had gotten some food from the grocers and Alex was sitting on Nick's lap eating a hot dog and some potato chips and milk. The glass was a little to big for her to handle and Nick helped her hold it while she drank. All through this time she stared at Janette who tried her best to comfort the child. But Alex would not leave Nick for a minute. Then later as Nick was telling Alex a story, Janette sat down beside Nick on the couch and smiled at the child. Even though Alex was listening intently to what Nick was saying she kept stared at Janette. Then suddenly, she let go of Nick and crawled up into Janette's lap and put her head on Janette's breast. Nick raised an eyebrow, and was inwardly very releaved to be free for a while, and very pleased that Alex was not afraid of Janette.
Before long the little girl again fell asleep and Janette carried her up to Nick's bedroom. She had found a small mattress at the Raven and placed it next to the bed. She laid Alex down on the mattress and put a comforter around the sleeping child. Then she turned and saw Nick standing behind her. She moved into his arms and he kissed her gently on the lips. "Thank you, Janette! You are really a big help to me. And I love you so!"
Janette kissed Nick on the lips and then turned in his arms to look at Alex asleep on the small mattress. "She is so helpless, Nichola. I want to help her." And then she looked up at Nick and said, "It also makes me wonder what it would have been like if we had met under different circumstances and could have had a child of our own."
Nick suddenly got a pained expression and then said softly, "Alexis has no living relatives Janette. She has no one to take care of her. And she will be sent to a foster home as soon as we close this case."
Janette looked at Nick for a few minutes and then said, "Oh I wish we could take care of her. She is so small and vulnerable, Nichola."
Nick nodded his agreement and pulled Janette closer to him. They both then looked at the sleeping child, lost in their own thoughts.
Chapter 5
Large house on the ourskirts of London circa 2010
"Memories of long ago, Daddy?" came a soft pleasant voice back to Nick's ears.
Nick looked up to see Alex sitting on his lap staring into his blue eyes. He came back to himself and smiling put his hand on her cheek and said, "Yes, honey. I was just remembering when we first met you. I bet you don't remember that, do you?"
Alex smiled back at Nick and said, "I remember meeting a man who was very kind to me and," and at this she turned to Janette and said, "and a woman who helped me forget my fears." And blood red tears welled up in her eyes as she said, "And I remember being taken away from you and wanting desperately to go back."
Janette said, "I remember that as well, Alex, and how much Nick and I missed you. You were so sad and we did not want you to leave." And Janette suddenly got a far-away look as she remembered:
Flashback Toronto 1995:
Nick's Loft-Alex looked at the man and woman who had come to take her away. She did not want to go and she got tears in her eyes. She looked at Janette and Nick and said, "Must I go with them? Must I?"
Janette looked at Alex and said, "We don't want you to leave either, Alex, but you must be put in a foster home where people can take care of you and perhaps someone can adopt you."
Alex blurted out through her tears, "But I don't want to leave you! I want to stay here." And Alex ran to Nick and grabbed his leg saying, "Please Mr. Nick. Please don't make me go with them. I want to live here, with you. Please!"
Nick looked down at Alex with a sad expression on his face, and picked up the child. Alex buried her face in his chest and began to cry very hard. Nick stroked the child's back and then when she had calmed down he said, "Alexis, look at me. You must go with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis." And when Alex started to cry he held her tighter and said, "And I am sure that they will let you come and visit us. Now that would be alright, wouldn't it?" Nick looked up at the couple standing near the loft door.
"Yes, Alexis, we can bring you back for visits, anytime you like. And I promise we will let you phone them if you can't get out for a visit." said Mr. Lewis.
Alex looked at Nick and then Janette and started to dry her tears. "You promise, Mr. Nick, you promise I can come and see you?"
Nick smiled and said, "I promise Alexis," and he put up two fingers with his right hand and said, "Scouts Honor." Then he gave Alex a big hug and a kiss on the cheek, and let het down to the floor.
Alex then went to Janette and gave her a big hug and a kiss. Then she went over to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and took Mrs. Lewis' hand. They started out the door of the loft with Alex looking back with tears streaming down her face at Nick and Janette. And then they were gone with Nick and Janette standing there, arms around each other watching with sad eyes too.
Later that night as Nick and Janette laid in Nick's bed upstairs after making love for several hours Janette (with her head on Nick's shoulder) gave a sudden big sigh. Nick looked down at his beloved and caressing her head said, "What is it, mon amour?"
"I was thinking about Alexis. I wonder how she is doing with the Lewis'?"
"I am sure that she will be alright, Janette. She's a strong little girl and she will be able to adjust." Nick began to stroke Janette's hair and gave her a kiss on her head.
Suddenly, Janette sat up in the bed and grabbed the sheets. Nick sat up to at this sudden gesture and said, "What?"
Janette looked at Nick and then began to smile. She looked very long into his blue eyes and said, "Do you love me, mon amour?"
Nick looked at Janette with a puzzled look on his face. "You know that I love you, Janette. I have never really loved anyone as much as I love you."
Janette smiled broader and said, "I know a way that we can help Alexis, Nichola." Nick looked at her, still puzzled. Then Janette took Nick into her arms and said, "Nichola, if you love me, then marry me!"
Nick suddenly stared at Janette in disbelief. "Why would you want to do that, Janette? We do not need to be married. We are vampires. We will live forever, and we are not bound by mortal laws, as you have so often told me."
Janette was not undaunted by Nick's reaction. She continued to smile and said, "I know that I said that Nichola, and under normal circumstances that would be true. But if we were married, we could adopt Alexis and raise her as our own."
Nick now knew what had been on Janette's mind all evening. Even when they were making love, he sensed something troubling her. But she had shielded it from him when they tasted each other's blood. And Nick thought about what Janette had said. He would love to have Alexis as his little daughter, and it seemed that she really liked them. But he also knew there were many possibly insurrmountable problems with this idea.
"Janette, think." Nick said quietly, still holding Janette in his arms. "If Alexis were to come to live with us, how are we going to shield our vampire nature from her? She is only a child." Nick stopped because he had another even more disturbing thought. "And what of Lacroix? You know what he did to Daniel. And I will not have that small child brought across."
Janette continued to smile to herself. "I know all of that Nichola. But we can find a way somehow." And then she broke from the embrace and looked deeply into her lover's eyes. "You do love me don't you?"
Nick could see that Janette had made up her mind and that there was nothing he could do to change it. And perhaps, they could find a way to get around Lacroix and the vampire problem. He sighed and said, "Yes, Janette. I will marry you. And then we will have to find a way to get around this problem." But mon coeur," Nick said as he ran his finger down Janette's cheek, "There is also a possibility that the authorities will not let us adopt Alexis."
Janette smiled back at Nick and said, "Oh, Nichola. Really. Do you think that we can not take care of that?"
Nick's eyebrow raised and he began to chuckle. "Oh yeah, I forgot. We can force them to do what we want." And then bringing Janette into his arms, he asked her once more time, "Are you sure this is what you want mon desir.?"
"Oh yes, Nicola. Oh yes!"
Two weeks later, Nick and Janette were preparing to go to Brampton to get married. They had notified Lacroix of what they were planning and he was very pleased. But Lacroix knew there was something else they were up to. "No matter, they will let their shield down and I will find out what it is." Lacroix thought.
As Janette was packing some clothes into a suitcase, (as she had been staying with Nick in his loft for the last month, since Alexis had come to stay with them, she heard a soft knock at the door of the loft.
She hollered for Nick, who came down the stairs and said, "What is it?"
"There is someone at the door, Nichola, and I don't think it would be wise for me to answer it, in case it is your Dr. Lambert!" Janette said, somewhat sarcastically.
Nick frowned at her and said, "Janette, you know that I made Nat forget everything, so if she did come to see me she would not think it funny that you are here. She knows what you are." Nick walked over to the door and opened it. There stood little Alex with a small suitcase in her hand, clutching the teddy bear Nick had bought for her when she came to live with him while she was in protective custody.
"Hi, Mr. Nick. I'm back to live with you." And with that Alex came into the loft and started toward the stairs and the bedroom to put her suitcase down and unpack.
Nick and Janette looked at each other in surprise and Nick stopped Alex from going too far by catching her arms gently. "Hold it, little spider. What are you doing here?"
Alex stopped and looked at Nick. "I've come back to live with you and Lady Janette. Can I go unpack my stuff now, Mr. Nick?"
Janette went over to Alexis and kneeling down to her level she said, "Do Mr. & Mrs Lewis know where you are, Alexis?"
Alex got a big grin on her face and said, "No way. I'm really good at sneaking out."
Nick kneeled down beside Janette and looked into Alexis eyes and said with a somewhat stern voice, "How did you get here, Alexis?"
Alex's smile began to disappear. "I got Mr. Stapleton to drive me over here. I told him that I was visiting you." Mr. Stapleton was the neighbor of Margie and Dan Lewis who were watching Alex as a foster child until someone adopted her. He knew that Alex had visited Nick and Janette a couple of times and since he was babysitting for her, he thought the Lewis' had said it was ok for her to go. So he drove her over.
Nick picked up Alex and carried her over to the couch with Janette following and sitting down he put her on his lap. Then he pulled her face up to his and said in a very stern voice, "Alexis, it is a bad thing for you to leave Mr. & Mrs. Lewis without telling them where you are going. What if someone had picked you up when Mr. Stapleton drove off? Have you forgotten what happened to your parents."
Alex's lower lip began to pucker and protrude as she frowned and said, "Please don't be mad at me Mr. Nick, but I do not want to live with Mr. & Mrs. Lewis anymore. I want to live with you and Lady Janette."
Janette touched Alex's arm and Alex turned to Janette as she said, "Alexis, you can't always do everything you want. If you wanted to visit us, you should have told Mr. & Mrs. Lewis. And you can't live here, because we are not your parents. For the time being, Mr. & Mrs. Lewis are your parents. And you have probably scared them to death. You should be very sorry for what you have done."
Alexis began to cry. "But I thought you and Mr. Nick liked me. I thought you wanted me to live with you."
Nick looked at Janette and then pulled Alex next to his chest as she began to cry. "Alexis, we do like you and we want you to be happy and safe. But we can't break the law. And you can't do that either. If the police caught you, you could go to jail. You don't want that do you?"
Alex pulled back from Nick and she looked into his sapphire eyes with her own very large eyes searching his face. "You mean I am going to be arrested, Mr. Nick?" And she began to cry again.
"Well, I don't know Alexis, don't you think you should be?" Nick continued.
Janette through the mind link said, <Nichola, don't tease her like that, you will upset her. And she's been through enough already.>
Nick responded back thru the link, <I am not going to upset her, Janette. But she must understand what she has done is wrong. Otherwise she will be taken to juvenile authorities and eventually not be allowed to be adopted.>
Alex looked down and said softly, "I'm sorry, Mr. Nick. I just don't want to live with Mr. & Mrs. Lewis. I want to live here with you and Lady Janette! Please Mr. Nick! Please don't send me away."
Nick looked at Janette deeply and she suddenly nodded her head. Then he looked at Ale ry and held her arms out to Nick who took her from Janette and gave her a big hug and kiss. Then he lowered her to the floor and said, "Go get your things, it's time to come home."
Alex looked at Mr. & Mrs. Lewis who were also smiling and then she ran up the stairs as fast as she could.
About an hour later, Nick, Janette and Alex stepped into the Loft. Janette bent down and said to Alex, "Welcome home, Alexis!"
"Thank you Lady Janette! Mr. Nick." Alex said excitedly.
Nick looked down at Alexis and said, "Don't you think it is time you call us Mommy and Daddy, Alexis?" And he smiled at his new daughter.
Alexis looked up at Nick and smiled too. "Ok, Daddy. But you have to stop calling me Alexis and call me Alex. That's what my old mommy and daddy used to call me."
Nick smiled at his daughter and said, "Deal!"
Alex walked with Janette up the stairs to her new bedroom. Janette helped Alex put all of her stuff away. And showed her the two new presents given to her by Schanke, and Natalie. One was a beautiful, bendable doll with dark hair, just like Alex. The other one was a really pretty music box with a unicorn on the top. It played the tune of "When you wish upon a star." Alex looked at the gifts, playing with them for a few minutes, and then went to Janette and gave her a big hug. She was so happy!
Before too long Nick appeared at the door to Alex's new room and watched Janette and Alex playing with her new toys. He smiled and then cleared his throat. Janette and Alex looked up. Alex said, "Look Mr. Ni, I mean daddy. Look at my new doll. Isn't it really neat?"
Nick smiled and said, "It sure is honey!" Then he walked into the room and kneeling in front of Alex, he handed her a small white box tied up in a red ribbon. "This is a welcome home present from your mother and me."
Alex's eyes got real big and she took the box from Nick. Nick and Janette watched as Alex undid the ribbon and opened the box. Inside was a black box, and Alex opened it to find a beautiful gold necklace inside with a heart pendant. "Thank you, mommy and daddy."
Janette then turned the necklace around and showed Alex the inscription. On the front of the heart pendant were the letters, ALEXIS MARIE KNIGHT and on the back it said simply, Love, Mommy and Daddy.
Alex fingered the heart and looked at it for quite awhile. When she looked up she had tears in her eyes. For a small child of six, Alex understood more than Nick and Janette thought she would. She knew that this was her new name and the necklace was very special. Janette helped her put the necklace on and then she went over to the mirror and looked at it. Janette and Nick stood by the bed with their arms wrapped around each other's waists. Alex looked at the necklace for quite some time, then she turned around to Nick and Janette and said, "How does it look?"
Janette said, "It looks wonderful." And then she bent and gave Alex a big hug.
And that is how it was for the entire first week that Alex was with Nick and Janette. She helped out with all the chores around the loft, dusting and helping with the dishes. Sweeping the loft and helping her mommy do the laundry. And in the early evenings, Nick would sit down at the piano, with Alex on his lap and play songs for her. She would try to play a few things herself and Nick would chuckle at what she would come up with. Nick promised her that when she was older, he would teach her how to play.
Nick and Janette took Alex to the precinct on Wednesday, and they had a good time showing her off. Alex would go to everyone and proudly show them her necklace and tell them, "See what it says? Alexis Marie Knight. That's my name!"
Everyone had a good time watching the little girl and they could see just how proud and happy Nick and Janette were with their "new" daughter. Capt Cohen told Nick that she was very happy for him now that he had two special women in his life and she knew also that it would improve his attitude at work, now that he had people in his life. Nick smiled and told her that he was sure he would be more on the ball, now that he had a family of his own.
One night, though, Nick and Janette had to face their first crisis. One they knew was coming, but did not know it would be so soon. Alex was at the table eating her dinner, Janette and Nick sat there too, but all they had was a glass of red liquid. Nick was reading the paper and Janette was folding down the laundry. Suddenly, without warning, Alex picked up Nick's drink and took a big gulp. And then she started to choke. Nick put his paper down and went over to Alex, hitting her on the back and trying to get her to spit out the liquid she was trying to swallow. After a few minutes she did spit out most of the liquid. Nick looked at Janette and she looked at Nick and they knew that now was the time to discuss a very important matter!
When Alex had calmed down and she was sitting on Nick's lap, he said, "Alex, why did you drink out of my glass?"
"Because I wanted to know what you and mommy always drink every night that you don't let me drink." Alex said, still gasping somewhat from her experience. Janette handed Alex a small glass of water and Alex drank it all in one big gulp.
"Alex, you should always ask before you grab something of someone else's. No matter if it is a toy, a piece of food, or someone's drink." Nick told Alex.
She looked at Nick and said, "I'm sorry, Daddy. But how come you and Mommy never eat with me? Why do I always have to eat alone? And why do you always drink that stuff? It tastes awful!"
Janette and Nick knew that now was the time to act. Nick took Alex's face in his hand and began to slowly regulate her heart. Then he spoke softly and very powerfully to her. "Alex, listen to me. You will listen to me and you will remember what I say. Ok?"
Alex looked at Nick with blank expression on her face and just stared at him. "You will never tell anyone what you see your mommy and I do. No matter what you see and hear, you will never tell anyone. Do you understand me?"
Alex continued to stare at Nick and slowly said, "Yes, Daddy, I understand you. I won't tell anyone, what I see you and mommy do!"
Nick then pressed deep into Alex's mind and made sure that she understood him. Then he released her by saying. "Now you will sleep, Alex."
Alex slowly closed her eyes and fell against Nick's chest. He looked down at her and then at Janette.
"Well we will know soon if this worked, Janette! Let's hope it did. You know some children are not easily hypnotized."
Janette nodded and waited for a few minutes to see if Alex would wake up. Soon Alex started to stir in Nick's arms and then she opened her eyes and looked up at Nick and said, "Did I fall asleep, Daddy?"
Nick smiled at Alex and said, "Yes, honey. But I think that you were just tired. You had a big day. Would you like to finish your supper now?"
Alex moved away from Nick slowly and carefully got back into her chair and finished her supper. The rest of the night was uneventful, and all retired later to bed. Nick watched as Janette sat on the bed and read a story to Alex. Soon her eyes began to close and soon she was fast asleep. Janette slipped out from under Alex and she fell slowly back onto the pillow. Janette covered up her little daughter, kissed her on the cheek and then went towards the door and Nick and shut out the light. All seemed to be working out well for the Knights. But was it really?
A Townhouse in another area of Toronto:
Not far across town Lacroix had just returned home from a trip to London. He was settling in, putting things away, when he sensed something in his link with his "children". What was going on? Lacroix decided that he would pay a call on his Nicholas and Janette and see what was vibrating so strongly in their link.
