Chapter Two: "The Law of Texas"

Everyone in the town heard the shot, and everyone came out to see what happened. Enoch stood over the man. He had blood all over him, and he was holding the gun. A man by the name of David Hall came up to Enoch.

"What happened here?" Enoch looked at him in dismay, he couldn't believe he had actually killed someone.

"I..He...He pulled a gun out, and tried to steel my horse." Enouch looked down, he was ashamed. David looked at Enoch and looked at the man laying on the ground.

"Well, that there is Bob Thorn, he was a drunken loser everyday of his life. Don't worry
about it." David looked at Enoch, and knew he was upset.

"What about the law here?" Enoch said, looking down at Bob."

"Well, sir, this here is Bradick county, the law is on your side, come on, I'll by you a drink." David took Enoch into the bar, and they sat down to have a drink.

"Hello Bryant," Jessie said looking up at him.

"Jessie, we need to talk." Eugene said,

"Ok..talk," Jessie replied leaning up against a wall. Eugene was a little afraid, but went ahead,

"When you hired me, I was supose to be your deputy, but for two months, I have been doing your job." Jessie looked down at the ground,

"Eugene, I...." Eugene cut him off

"....Jessie, if you don't want the job, then..." before Eugene could finish Jessie looked up and grabed his shirt,

"Listen, I'm the sheriff, and thats the way it's going to stay until I say so..." With that Jessie through Eugene down to the ground and walked off toward the sheriffs department.

"Well, Mr. Southworth, I know some good land that you could stake, a few thousand acres." David said.

"please call me Enoch, I guess I could take a look at it. I need the perfect peice of
land." Enoch said. The two had a few more drinks then David invited Enoch to stay with him and his family. The two left and went to David's house. They walked into the house and were greeted by Davids wife and daughter.

"Good evening honey," David said, kissing his wife on the cheek.

"This here is Mr. Enoch Southworth. He's looking to stake somewhere around here. Enoch, this is my wife Judy, and our daughter, Samatha."

Collin Gray had been like a father to Jessie and the Ewing boys. He was around almost everyday of their lives. He had been traveling around for the last few years, but decided to see the boys. Collin had heard that Jessie was the sheriff of a small Texas town, but had not seen him in action. Collin found the sheriffs department, got off his horse and walked in. He looked around and saw a man sitting at his desk, looking down at a paper.

"Excuse me," Collin said, "I'm looking for the sheriff," Jessie looked up and saw Collin standing by the door.

"Oh my...Collin, is that really you?" Jessie said, jumping up out of his chair. The men hugged,

"Jessie, you have grown into a man. I can't believe it." Collin said looking at him.

"Well, I had to grow up after you left." The two men laughed and then sat down to catch up.

"Yes" Enoch said, sitting up on the bed. The door opened and in walked Samatha. Samatha gave Enoch a seductive look.

"Can I help you Samatha?" Enoch said, a little puzzeld to why she was there.

"Well, Mr. Southworth sir, I thought maybe I could help you." She said, walking up to him. He knew very well what she meant, but tried to play dumb.

"No, I think I am ok, just getting ready to get to sleep." Enoch said, standing up. Samatha walked up to him and gentley touched his arm and rubbed her hands up to his neck. The touch gave Enoch a cold chill. Samatha was a very attractive woman, and he was very temped.

"Eouch," Samatha said, "Are you sure there is nothing I can do for you?" Samatha went to kiss him, but Enoch at the last minute pulled away.

"Samatha, your a very pretty young woman, but I have someone waiting on me and I love her very much." Samatha stood there for a second, and then said,

"Thats ok, I'll give you a little while, then you'll come around." And with that Samatha
walked towards the door, she gave Enoch a sudative glance and walked out of the room, Enoch just stood there. not sure if he made the right decisson or not.

"Well, Jeffery was always mean, but he changed alot in the past years." The two men continued to talk, a few minutes later, Eugene rushed in. Jessie looked at him and
could tell something was wrong.

"Excuse me, Jessie, but this is kinda imporant." Jessie stood up,

"What it is Eugene?"

"Well," Eugene contiued, "You said that if anyone heard anything about The Starr gane

"And???"

"Well, someone in the bar just said that they were headed toward San Antonio." Jessie
looked at Collin. Collin said,

"We leave first thing in the morning." Looking at Collin, Jessie said,

"We?"

"Thats right, I'm going too, you need someone you can count on, and you can't take your deputy, he has to watch over the town. jessie thought for a min.
