Baby, Baby by Lizzie
Part Seven in the Series

Baby, baby
I'm taken with the notion
To love you with the sweetest of devotion.

Baby, baby
My tender love will flow from
The bluest sky to the deepest ocean.

Stop for a minute
Baby, I'm so glad you're mine, yeah
You're mine.

Baby, baby
The stars are shining for you
And just like me I'm sure that they adore you.

Baby, baby
Go walking through the forest
The birds above a'singing you a chorus.

Stop for a minute
Baby, I'm so glad you're mine, oh yeah
And ever since the day you put my heart in motion
Baby I realize that there's just no getting over you.

Baby, baby
In any kind of weather
I'm here for you always and forever.

Baby, baby
No muscle man could severMy love for you is true and it will never
Stop for a minute

Baby, I'm so glad you're mine
And ever since the day you put my heart in motion
Baby I realize that there's just no getting over you.

And ever since the day you put my heart in motion
Baby I realize that there's just no getting over you.
Over you.
Baby, baby
Always and forever
Baby I'm so glad Here for you babySo glad you're mine
Baby I'm so gladWhen I think about you it makes me smile
Baby, baby be mine
Baby I'm so gladDon't stop giving me loveDon't stop, no

Joey pressed stop on the tape deck. She ejected the tape from the stereo and handled it nervously. "How is he going to take this?" she wondered out loud. Joey had just spent about an hour making a tape filled with songs with the word 'baby' in them. It was late August and Joey and Dawson had been married for about eight months. To the happy couple marriage and life in general was pure bliss. They were living in New York in a small apartment, but it was good enough for them. Dawson had been working as a director's assistant for a few small films. He hadn't quite gotten to Spielburg's level, but it was a step in the right direction and it paid the bills. Joey, who had a degree in education, had been tutoring for the past few months and was about to start a new job as a third grade teacher at a school in the city. Joey sighed as she thought of how well everything was going for her and her husband. She looked down at her stomach nervously.
"Oh, I hope he wants this," she thought. She grabbed her keys and headed to the video store. She had a plan to ease him into the idea.Across town…
"Perfection," Dawson thought as he fought his way through traffic to be with his wife. "My life seems perfect. The perfect wife, a near perfect job, a nice house, the perfect wife, wonderful friends, the perfect wife," Dawson chuckled to himself as he realized he had said it all out loud.
When they were young, Joey and Pacey had always teased him about having the perfect life. That perfection was tainted when his mother's affair nearly ripped his family apart. Dawson frowned. He hoped that his life with Joey would remain perfect and worried that it might not. He pushed the idea out of his head, knowing that his relationship with his best friend, turned wife, would always be perfect, no matter what challenges life threw at them. Dawson pulled into the parking garage to the apartment complex. He turned off the car and made his way to his wife. He snuck into their apartment quietly and made his way to the kitchen where, judging by the delicious aroma, she was preparing dinner. He slipped his hands around her waist, startling her.
"Hello sweetheart. I missed you," he said as he nuzzled his face in her neck.
"Hey baby," she replied, turning crimson at the word, "How was your day?"
"Great! I'm learning more and more everyday. I just wish I could jump right in there, though you know? I'm sick of being the assistant. I'm ready for a Spielburg caliber film."
"It'll happen. I promise," she said reassuringly as she kissed him fully on the mouth.
"Umm…. You did miss me," he said, pulling away, "So what's on the docket for this evening?"
"Well I'm making stuffed chicken and wild rice. It will be ready in about ten minutes. I thought we'd have a nice dinner and then have a movie night. We hardly ever do that anymore…Usually we're in bed by nine o'clock, not that I mind, because I do love being in bed with you, and the activities we do in bed, well you're getting better and better everyday my friend, but tonight I feel like regressing. Just for a little while. Then maybe after the movies, we can go back to activities of the nocturnal nature."
"Why don't we skip the movies and go right to the nocturnal part. Hell, why don't we skip dinner?" Dawson grinned playfully as moved in to kiss his wife.
Joey stopped him, "Come on honey. I already rented the videos and everything. Please?" Dawson, not able to resist her pleading brown eyes, caved in.
"Uggh…Fine. So what did you rent?"
"It's a surprise. Go clean up. Dinner will be ready in a few minutes." Dawson retreated to their bedroom. Joey popped the tape she had made earlier in the stereo. She lit candles and placed their steaming dinner on the table. She pressed play on the stereo just as Dawson came into the dining room.
"New CD?" he asked as he held Joey's chair out for her.
"Nope, just a mixed tape I made this afternoon," she replied quickly. Songs like "Baby, Baby" and "I'm Your Baby Tonight" filled the apartment as the couple ate their dinner. Dawson talked about his day on the set and Joey talked about her tutoring session with a boy that reminded her so much of Pacey, that it made her cringe. Joey noticed that Dawson remained oblivious to her subtle hints on the tape. She decided it was time to pull out the big guns. Movies. The only thing, beside herself, that truly spoke to Dawson.
After dinner they cleared the table and the dishes together and settled down on the couch for movie night. Dawson pulled Joey into his lap and wrapped his arms around her. He pressed play on the remote and they became lost in the series of movies that Joey had picked out.
First, they watched "Baby Boom." Dawson, who was not a big fan of Diane Keaton, was happy when she put in one of their favorites, "Parenthood." Finally, Joey decided it was time for the grand finale. She popped in the movie and settled back into Dawson's arms. About halfway through "She's Having a Baby," Dawson stopped the movie.
"Uh, honey, I can't help but notice an underlying theme in the selection of tonight's movies," he said nervously.
"Oh? What's that?" she asked innocently, wanting to hear him say it, so she wouldn't have to.
"Are you, uh, I mean are we…pregnant?" he choked out the last word.
"Yes Dawson. Um, what do you think about that?" she asked.
"Oh jeez," he replied with a stunned look on his face as he ran his fingers through his wavy blond hair.
Joey frowned, "I was hoping for a little more enthusiasm. You know what? I'm going to bed. We can talk about this in the morning. And I'm sorry Dawson, but I don't think I'm in the mood for any of the 'nocturnal' activities we had planned. In fact, it's not possible, since you're sleeping on the couch." Joey started to the bedroom as a grin appeared on Dawson's face.
"Joey, honey wait!" he said as he got up to pull her back to him.
"Don't you 'honey wait' me," she replied as she spun around to face him. She looked at him and noticed the stupid grin on his face. She softened, "Why are you grinning like an idiot?"
"Josephine Leery, sit down and listen to me," Joey obeyed and a lopsided smile crept across her face at the mention of her married name. Dawson took her hands and looked into her eyes and continued, "You know, I was thinking on the way home today about perfection. Our relationship has been just that. Being best friends for twenty-two years and romantic partners for nearly eight years, except for our brief hiatus-which I don't count, has been the most wonderful thing in my life. It has been perfect Joey. You're perfect. I have to admit though, for a second, your little news flash scared me. Could our perfection be tainted by a child? I mean, it's a scary world out there Joey. You and I both know that. How can we bring something so innocent into a world that's so scary?"
Joey frowned again and got up to leave. "Joey wait. You didn't let me finish. In a world that is so scary, there has to be something that makes it a little less scary, or else me and you wouldn't have our, dare I say the words, perfect life. Our love is perfect, Joey and as long as our baby is conceived in that love, we have nothing to worry about. It'll only make it more perfect, if that's at all possible. Now I'm sorry I freaked a little. The concept was a little new to me. I assume you have known about this for awhile, am I right?"
"About a week," she admitted sheepishly.
"And did you freak out a little when you found out?"
"A little. I've gotten used to the idea though. And I like it," Joey smiled.
"I do too. But Joey, what about work?"
"Well see, I figured that out. You, my perfect husband, will make it big soon. I can feel it. And I'm going to continue teaching for the next seven months or so and then I'll go on maternity leave. I can resume teaching when I feel the baby can do okay with a babysitter for a few hours during the day,"
Joey explained."Ah so you have all of this figured out, do you?"
"Sure do."
"So…We're having a baby," Dawson said in awe as he gathered her into his arms.
"Yeah, we are."
"Joey?"
"Yeah?"
"Does this mean no more nocturnal activities for the next nine months?" heasked.
"I spoke to the doctor. He said it's safe for the first trimester. After that, you're on your own buddy."
"Katie Couric, here I come!" Dawson joked. Joey playfully punched him on the arm. "What do you say we get a head start on that trimester?"
"I say I'll race you to the bedroom!" Joey replied happily.
