"Hello?" Joey answered the phone.
"Hey hon. How are you feeling?"
"Pretty good. The morning sickness seems to have subsided for the day," Joey responded to her husband as she gently rubbed her stomach.
"Good. Um, your going to be mad at me," Dawson said nervously.
"Uh oh. Why?"
"I can't make it to the appointment today, but before you get mad, let me tell you why," Dawson said quickly.
"Explain."
"Well, I got a call when I got to work this morning from a screenwriter. He's written a few other movies that have been fairly successful. He wants me to look at his script Joe! He wants me to direct it! No more assistant director for me! I asked him if we could do it tomorrow, because my beautiful pregnant wife has an appointment this afternoon, but he's leaving town tomorrow, so he didn't have time. Are you mad?"
"Mad? No! This could be it Dawson! This could be your big break! How could I possibly be mad? I'm so happy for you honey!" Joey gushed.
"How did I get so lucky? Thank you for being so understanding. Are you sure you'll be okay going by yourself?"
"I'm a big girl Dawson. I think I can handle it. What time will you be home?"
"Around five."
"Okay, we're having company tonight, so don't be late, okay?"
"I won't. Who's coming?"
"It's a surprise. I have to get going or I'm going to be late. I love you," Joey said.
"I love you too. Bye," Dawson replied happily.
Later that day…
Joey entered the apartment with a look of happiness and bewilderment on her face. She set down the bag of groceries that she had bought on the way home from the doctor's office. She smiled and thought of the surprises the night had in store for her husband and their guests. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening and closing.
"Joey?" her husband called.
"In here!" Joey shouted from the kitchen.
"Hey beautiful," he said as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. "How was your appointment?"
"Good…I'll give you details over dinner, okay? How was YOUR appointment?"
"Well two can play at this game. We'll discuss it over dinner," he said smiling.
"Fine. Be that way," she said playfully as she turned to start making dinner.
"You need some help?"
"Yeah, you can toss a salad and start the water for the pasta," she said and shoved the salad fixings in front of him.
"No problem. So, who's the mystery guest?"
"Guests…I told you babe, it's a surprise. Now get going on that salad!" Joey said as she busied herself with the spaghetti sauce.
The spaghetti sauce was soon simmering on the stove and Dawson had created a masterpiece of a salad. A knock was soon heard at the door. Dawson, who had been busy kissing his wife, broke away abruptly, running to the door to meet the mystery guests. Joey was disappointed that their little make-out session had to end, but was smiled when she saw how ecstatic Dawson was at the sight of their company.
"Pacey! Jen! God, where have you guys been? We've been trying to reach you for the past two months!" Dawson practically screamed as he embraced his friends.
"We took a little vacation," Jen told Dawson as she winked at her boyfriend.
"Yeah. A vacation," Pacey agreed dreamily. Dawson knew that voice and that look on his friend's face. He knew that Pacey had it bad for Jen.
"Hey jailbait. Getting into more trouble, are you?" Joey piped in.
"Josephine, girl, you've gained wait!" Pacey exclaimed seriously as he hugged her tightly.
"Pacey, you twit. She's pregnant! God you really are male," Jen reprimanded him, as she smiled and went to hug Joey.
"In more ways then one," he smiled slyly at his girlfriend.
"Congratulations you guys! I'm so happy for you two! How far are you along Joey? Four months? Five?" Jen asked.
"No, actually only three. Which is why we've been trying to contact you guys," Joey explained.
"Only three? Joe, your huge!" Pacey exclaimed.
"Watch it Witter. She's even meaner now that she's pregnant," Dawson teased, receiving a playful punch from his wife.
"Dinner's almost ready. We don't serve animals though, Pace, so you're out of luck," Joey retorted, getting him back for the huge comment.
"Prude," Pacey scowled.
"Well I think that by my current condition, we can pretty much assume that I am definitely not prude."
"I'll vouch for that," Dawson smiled.
"So what's for dinner?" Pacey asked.
"I told you, we don't serve animals in the Leery household," Joey teased.
"Easy girl. Spaghetti, salad, and French bread. You want a beer Pace? Jen?" Dawson asked.
"I'd love one," Pacey replied.
"Do you have any wine?" Jen asked.
"Sure do! Hold on, I'll be right back. Honey, what do you want?" Dawson called from the kitchen.
"Water's fine."
The four friends settled down at the dining room table with their drinks and started chatting.
"So have you been to the doctor lately Joey?" Jen asked.
"Yeah, she did today," Dawson replied for her, "But so far, she has been withholding the details from me. Spill it Joe."
"Well, they did an ultrasound today. Just to see how far I was exactly. They were thinking that I might have been a little bit farther along, considering how huge I am, so they did one just to be sure. I have the pictures in my purse. He said I'm doing just fine and so are the babies," Joey explained, smiling.
"Wait. Babies?" Dawson squealed, "We're having-"
"Twins," Joey finished for him.
Dawson jumped up from his seat and pulled Joey up from hers. He hugged her and spun her around as gently as he could, considering his excitement.
"TWINS! Can you believe it? We're having not one, but two babies!" he said as he planted a tender kiss on her lips.
"Congratulations again you guys!" Pacey and Jen said, both happy for the couple.
After the excitement subsided, Dawson, who didn't want his wife to exert too much energy, retreated to the kitchen. Soon the table was filled with spaghetti, salad, and bread. The conversation continued through dinner as the friends caught up.
"So Dawson, what are you working on right now?" Pacey asked.
"Well, I had a meeting today. And I think all my hard work will finally pay off. I met with a screenwriter today. He was interested in me directing the film. I've read about a quarter of it. I love it. It's really a good story and I think it could do well. I told him that I would have to check with my wife, but I would like to work with him on this. It is set in New York, so it would keep us here. He's talked with some people willing to produce it and he said that I would be paid half a million dollars. Not bad for my first solo gig, huh?" Dawson smiled proudly.
"Will the congratulations never end?" Pacey asked as he shook Dawson's hand.
"I'm so proud of you," Joey smiled as she leaned over to kiss him, "Congratulations honey. I knew you could do it."
"Well since you guys are getting all of the attention tonight, Jen and I are feeling a bit left out," he looked to Jen who nodded her approval.
"We have some good news too," Jen smiled.
"We're getting married," Pacey said proudly as Jen held up her left hand, revealing a gorgeous engagement ring.
"Congratulations!" Dawson exclaimed.
"Really Jen, I thought you had better taste," Joey teased, receiving a scowl from Pacey, "I'm joking Witter. Congratulations both of you. I'm so happy for both of you. You found a good one Jen. I'm serious Pacey, so don't let me regret saying it."
"Thanks Joe," Pacey said as they hugged.
"I think this deserves a toast!" Dawson exclaimed.
The four friends held their glasses up in the middle of the table.
"To our babies," Dawson said.
"To my husband's success," Joey said.
"To our engagement," Pacey and Jen said simultaneously. They smiled at each other and shared a sweet kiss as their already married friends looked on and followed their example.
