The Bill
"Jesus, Luke! What where you're going!" Tony Stamps irritated voice came down the corridor to Sergeant Gilmore's ears. He sighed and raised his eyes to the open door to his office just in time to see an obviously harrassed and in a rush Luke Ashton zip past his door. He hadn't been looking into Craig's room as he past so the Welsh man was spared any scathing looks from the young man. The type that he had sadely begun to become accustomed to nowadays. Ever since *that* moment nearly three months ago.
God had it been that long now? That long since Luke had kissed him.
And then ignored him. Between the angry remarks and violent dismissal that anything had occured. It left Craig's head in a spin.
He sighed and shook his head before trying to return his attention to the pile of paperwork that was seemingly growing before his eyes.
Five minutes later he attention was disrupted by another cry from down the corridor.
"Ashton! Are you or are you not supposed to be out on the Elmsmead estate right this moment?" Gina's unmistakeble voice echoed off the walls. He allowed himself a small smile as he pictured the likely expression on her face during the tirade. "That was not a question I needed an answer to PC Ashton, rather a quick-smartish disappearance in the direction of said estate that is rather lacking in your delectable presence right now." Another pause. "Is that clear, Aston?"
Silence. Either that or Luke's voice was not as piercingly loud or carrying as Gina's tended to be. Obviously, he thought with a small amount of compassion, Luke was having a bit of a bad day. It was only at the briefing that morning that Boyden had railed him over something from yesterdays relief.
Gina passed his door on the way to her own office opposite his and flashed him a grin on the way, which he returned. She left her own door open, as they both sometimes did. Sometimes it was nice to know that if you just cranked your head a little to the side you could see someone else suffereing in their own little pit of paperwork.
An hour later and Craig was just about to exact revenge and shred the last few remaing folders when Gina knocked on his door, holding her coat and hat.
"Just going out for a bit. Just letting you know because I'm expecting a visit from a Mr. Osworth at eleven and I doubt I'll be back. If you could just give a drink and park him somewhere safe for a bit I'd be grateful."
"Sure. Nothing wrong?"
"Just a bit of trouble down on the Elmsmead. Thought I'd better go down and see what's going on."
"Do you want me to come with you?" Craig asked, his first instinct was that anything but completing one more report would be better right now.
Gina smiled conspiritually. "No. It doesn't sound too serious and I like to think of at least one of us suffering at then mercy of the paper God, even if both of us can't." She smirked and disappeared.
"Ha ha," he mouthed before he suddenly remembered something that made hims pasue. The Elmsmead had been where Luke had been that morning. He pushed the thought out of his head immediately. Luke was a big boy and a police officer, he could handle himself and if he couldn't then he was in the wrong job. Craig couldn't worry himself everytime Luke was in a dangerous situation. In their job that would everytime he set foot outside the station on shift. He bent his head back over the current report and forced his attention back to it.
It was twenty minutes later that he heard heavy footsteps running down the hallway and a door slamming further down. He head shot up as he recognised the CAD room door. He rose from his chair to move over to the door. Just as he reached there, Matthew Boyden came down the corridor.
"Craig. Trouble down the Elmsmead." He sounded a bit out of breath.
"I know, Inspector Gold told me earlier. She was heading over there."
"Yeah, well, its got a bit worse since then. Inspector Gold was just taken hostage along with Ashton."
Craig's stomach plummeted to somewhere around his ankles.
Following Matt down to CAD he asked, "What happened?"
"Seems there's been a bit of a brewing gang war recently." Matt held the door open for the both of them. "Nothing too bad, nothing bad enough to reach our ears anyway. Rival small time gangs battling for control over drug distribution and general dominance we think. Seems something was beginning to kick off this morning on Luke's morning patrol. He called it in, was joined by Tony who was nearby. That's when Inspector Gold decided to go down herself. We all thought it was calming down but something must have gone wrong because just as Gold was talking to some of them, it sounds as though a fight broke out and Gold and Ashton were caught in the middle. Tony managed to get out the way in time. I've got the area car and the rest of the patrols in the area moving over to support. Okaro has been notified."
"Armed?"
Matt nodded. "Hand guns. Both men who grabbed them. Three men in the other gang, all armed too. They've since disappeared."
"Okay, we need the ARV on call and the hostage negotiator there as well." He paused. "Do we know where Gold and Ashton are right now?"
"Tony said they'd been dragged into the underground garages."
"Okay, we need to be aware of the other gang, chances are they will still be around if not back at some point."
Ruby who was sat at the control suddenly jumped visably in her chair.
"Ruby?" Matt asked quickly.
"Gun shot sarge. Faint, but it was definately a gun." She looked round at them.
"Ah Jesus," Matt said under his breath. A second later, Tony's breathless voice could be heard over the radio.
"Sierra Oscar from 244, shot fired on the Elmsmead. Officer down, I repeat, Officer is down. It's Luke."
"244 from Sierra Oscar, we read you Tony," Matt had grabbed Ruby's headset and pressed it to his face. "We've got the ARV on its way to you, plus an amubulance." He wavered meaningfully over to Gemma who immediately ordered the ambulance and confirmed that the ARV had been dispatched only a few minutes earlier and was on route. "What's the situation?"
"Luke and Inspector Gold are in the underground garages bit, but I can see them from where I am. Luke's on the ground. I can't see any more. It looked like there was a scuffle and then Luke went down."
"Was it a close up shot or distant?" Craig knew Matt was trying to establish whether it was within the hostage group or from the absent other gang.
"Hard to be sure for definate but I say it was close up."
"Shit," Matt cursed. "Good but bad." Craig knew what he meant. Good because it meant it was not from another gang and therefore wasn't the start of a all out gangfire. Bad because it was close up and that could mean it was worse for Luke. "Okay, Tony," Matt continued, "hang tight until back up arrives, it should be a there in a few minutes."
"Okay sarge."
He turned and looked at Craig who had gone pale.
"Craig?"
Craig shook himself mentally and tried to calm the churning panic feeling that was rolling around his stomach. "I'll go meet Okaro on the way down. He'll want to go out there fairly quickly so I'll go with him. You stay here and man the radio."
He hurried out of CAD and caught Okaro on his way down the stairs. Updating him swiftly on the situation and their response, Okaro nodded and within three minutes they were both out in a car and headed to the estate.
Craig was driving, but as he rounded the next turn he wasn't at all sure he should be. Hismind was definately only half on the road in front of him and mostly on the young man who he had just heard reported shot.
It made him want to shake all over and if he hadn't been doing what he was and caught up in the rush of the situation, his rank making him vitally involved, then he had a stong suspicion he would be on the floor in a jibbering wreck. Instead he was driving the Super over to the site of the incident and trying desparately to keep a rain on his emotions.
Luke was down.
Shot.
Right now, they didn't know whether he was alive or dead.
He swallowed quickly and rounding another corner came skidding to a halt next to the ARV which was just getting set up. Okaro jogged straight over to them where they were talking to Tony. Craig came up just as Tony was describing where he had last seen Gold and Ashton.
"...they were under that section just there, but about three four minutes ago they dragged them inside. I haven't seen anything since then. But I know this place, there's only a couple of places they could go from in there and they haven't come out the other side. Des and Hollis are watching the east side"
"So they're inside?" Okaro asked.
"Have to be. There's two stairs in that garage, one to either block. That one and that one." He reached up and pointed to the two far blocks that were over-shadowing where they were stood. "I've been keeping an eye on this one and there's been nothing, so I suspect that they're over in there somewhere."
"Good work, Tony." Okaro nodded and turned to the armed officers.
Craign stared at the imposing block and let out a breath to steady his nerves.
"We need to secure that area down there." One of the armed officers indicated the area where Tony had seen the original incident take place and Okaro nodded again.
"Secure, section by section." He agreed. "Okay, lets get started. We may have an officer in urgent need of medical care in there."
Craig looked down and then up swiftly at that remark. Horrifying images were already swimming through is head.
"Secure!" The same call came from all team members of the ARV and within moments all had swarmed to the area. The first thing they noticed was the stain on the concrete floor.
"Ah Jesus," Tony sighed.
It was blood, no doubt about it when one of the ARV officers bent down and touched it with a glove covered finger. He looked up and nodded to Okaro.
There wasn't much, but enough to suggest a steadily bleeding wound. Craig stared, his whole world narrowed down to that one dark patch.

"Luke?" A pause. "Luke?" Gina Gold shook the dark blue shoulder next to her gently.
She was worried. Gina Gold did not worry unnecessarily, it was what made her the Insoector she was today. She knew when to worry and when to be concerned. Right now she was both. The blood staining her hand was scaring her, as was the sodden piece of gauze she was desparately clutching.
They were inside one of the flats, bottom level. It was empty; the room they were in dirty and the scattered furniture covered in dust. They'd been dumped in here and the door locked. Her radio along with Luke's had been taken and they'd now been left alone, although she could still hear them talking next door.
God, she could still hear the echo of the gun shot in her ears, still see the shocked look on Luke's face as he crumpled over. She'd thought he was dead, taking a shot from that close, but as they'd dragged them both up to the flats he'd groaned and cried out. Now, lay by her side, she could see him pale and sweating in the dull light that the covered windows let in. He was barely conscious, weak and disorientated and losing a horrifying amount of blood. She'd managed to press a wad of gauze from her belt against the wound in his stomach but it had soaked through quickly.
Too quickly.
"Jesus, Luke," she muttered as she pressed the gauze from his own belt on top of hers.
He whimpered and pressed further into the hand she had resting against his forehead from behind. His breathing was shallow and laboured, his skin clammy to the touch.
"Craig,"
The whispered name from Luke's lips took her by surprise for a moment. "No, Luke. It's Inspector Gold," she whispered gently. "You've got to hang on for me a little longer, okay? We'll get you out of here and fixed up in no time, but you've got to hang on in there just a bit longer."
She didn't think he was coherant but she felt his head nod slightly and she smiled. "Good lad."
She jumped as a loud crash was heard from the next room, along with raised voices. Luke shifted, his breathing quickening. "Ma'am?" His voice was weak and she had to lean down to hear him better.
"I'm...sorry..."
"Whatever for?" She pressed down harder and whispered 'sorry' when she felt him flinch. She had to keep up a good pressure though, the boy was losing too much blood. "Wasn't your fault."
"Craig...tell him...I'm sorry..."
She frowned. "Whatever have you done to your sergeant this time?" she smiled.
"I was scared...." Luke took a shaky breath. "..confused...and I..."
"Luke?" She brushed the sweat on his forehead and into his hairline.
"I wanted him and I....was scared...." He let out a shuddery breath and she watched as a lone tear slipped silently down his cheek. "I hurt him." He tried to move round to look at her but stopped with a aborted whimper. "I'm...sorry..." His strength seemed to run out then and he slumped slightly in her arms.
Her mind reeled even as her hands still soothed. So Luke did have feelings back for Craig. When she'd found out, or realised, who Craig's secret crush was she'd been concerned. But she'd had faith in her Sergeant to keep things professional and proper, knowing or suspecting that Luke didn't have eyes for anyone other than Kerry. She'd held a secret suspsicion that Luke swung both ways, something she would never have shared with anyone; but his behaviour seemed to indicate he either didn't or he didn't acknowledge it. Her advice to Craig to leave things be at Luke and Kerry's engagement party had been sincere out of concern for all three parties involved. If Luke had wanted to marry Kerry and assume that side of his lifestyle then there was nothing Craig could do about it.
However Luke and Kerry's engagement had lasted about another week after the engagement party before Kerry had broken it off. No real explanation had been given but it had been not too long after the incident where her engagement ring had been stolen from her flat. Things had been alittle awkward at first; still were if you looked really closely, but she couldn't fault her coppers. Whatever had happened didn't come into the relief and the job had not been compromised. If it had she knew she would have had to insist on a transfer from one of them and she was glad it hadn't come to that. Both of them were too good a copper to lose. Young, but with a lot of potential she could see.
Not that she'd ever admit that to their face.
God, where the hell were they, she thought to herself for the hundreth time. She knew that they would have to play it safe, there were guns involved after all and it was a difficult situation that needed time to resolve. But damn it Luke didn't have that time. She was no Doctor but her years on the force had given her some knowledge and she knew that Luke was losing too much blood and too fast to survive much longer without medical treatment.
She gently held his forehead again, absently wiping the tear from his cheek, feeling a maternal instinct stirring somewhere deep in her. She'd never had kids. Fate and nature had decided that she wouldn't. It had bothered her for some time, always believing and having seen herself a a mother somewhere down the line when she was younger. When that had been taken away from her she had been left confused and with the feeling that something had been torn away from her. A gap, a black hole, a feeling of loss when she hadn't had anything in the first place. Years later and she'd learnt to live with it, but ever once in a while and she was reminded, like with Tommy, Marlene's kid, or with Cass.
Or now.
She considered her relief her kids in some respects, they behaved like it enough times, she smiled ruefully. Even though some of them were not really all that much younger than she, some of the younger ones, like Cass or Kerry or Luke, she knew that they stirred in her some redundent maternal feelings. Now, with Luke in her arms she was unprepared for the depth of emotion those feelings created.
She was damned if she was going to loose another of her kids.
Scanning her eyes about the room she looked at the window. They were on the front elavation by her guess. She hoped it was, it would make things much easier if they were, especially if she could do what she was hoping she could. Looking about carefully she kept an eye on the door. Gently and carefully she slipped her arms from around Luke, quickly shooshing him when he whimpered. He quietened immediately, consciousness returning briefly and his police instincts over-riding his more baser reactions. She slipped quickly over to the window and pushing back the board that had been pinned there she hastily surveyed the scene. There would be no time to hang around to try and catch anyone's attention, but with a pen in her pocket she scribbled on the back of the board, luckily not attached with any great care, and propped it back against the window. Moving back across the room she sat down next to Luke again, pressing her hand once again on his stomach and feeling a surge of pleasure when he pressed further into the hand she rested once again on his forehead.

"It's that one."
"Are you sure?" Okaro looked puzzled.
"Yes." Craig was firm.
"How do you know? Every flat looks the same."
"Look at the window."
Everyone did. They were quite a way down the walkway but even from that distance the black words on the board in the window were fairly clear.
Luke A for Kerry Y
no more....
GG
Tony got it and smiled. Okaro paused for a moment then smiled as realisation struck. "I always knew she was a vandal in her youth. Okay lets get in there."
The plan was set, the players in position. As the door crashed down, the sound gunshots filled the air briefly before the armed officers swifly took control of the situation and secured the armed men in the back of the flat. Craig and Okaro followed by Tony quickly entered the flat and found Gina in the front room, bent over the still figure of Luke, her hands pushing him over onto his back. She looked up, controlled fear in her eyes. "He just stopped breathing."
Tony rushed forward whilst Okaro ran to the outside door to beckon the paramedics in who had been hovering at a safe distance.
Once they were inside and bent over Luke, Tony and Gina stepped back. She half stumbled over to Craig who was still stood just inside the doorway. He was stock still, his eyes glued to Luke. She placed a hand on his arm and he turned shocked eyes to her. There was nothing she could say, she knew, the simple act of creating a physical connection to him was enough. Within minutes they had strapped Luke to a stretcher and were quickly carrying him out.
"Who's going with him?" Okaro asked.
"We will." Gina nodded at Craig. She held her hands awkwardly at her side, feeling the blood caked on her skin. Luke's blood...
Okaro nodded and she led Craig out of the flat and down to the car she had come in that morning. As she started up and drew out of the estate to head down to the hospital she threw a sideways glance at Craig who was sat still and quiet next to her.
"Craig?"
He shook his head and looked back at her, taking an audible breath.
"You alright?" she asked quietly.
"No," came the tired and honest reply. "I can't think."
She stared ahead at the road. "He called for you, you know."
His head turned sharply at that. "What?"
"When we were up there and.." she paused. "I think he thought I was you at first. Then he asked me to tell you he was sorry." She glanced at him again and saw his expression turn from surprise to shock to something else.
"For what?" His voice was soft.
"He wanted you but that he was scared; and confused. He hurt you and that he was sorry." She said quietly. She heard his intake of breath and knew he was close to tears. As she pulled into the hospital carpark she found a space and shut the engine off. Looking over at Craig she reached over and pulled him into her arms. He folded easily and just as she had with Luke she soothed and comforted him gently.
After a minute or so, he pulled back and wiping his eyes quickly, straightened his uniform and opened the door. Gina did the same and together they walked into A and E.
The reception was busy and it was a few moments before they managed to get through to the man behind the desk.
"Inspector Gold and Sergeant Gilmore. One of our PCs was just brought in; gun shot wound, Luke Ashton."
The man tapped at the computer and nodded, his expression unreadable. "Okay, he's in resuss right now, I'll get one of the nurses to come and see you." He indicated tot he seats behind them and picked up the phone. Slowly they sat down and waited.
A couple of minutes later a male nurse came and saw them. "Come thorugh," he said pointing at an office. "I'm sorry, but I don't have much news for you as yet. Your colleague is still in resuss right now so I'm not sure what the situation is. You can wait in here if you like. As soon as I know anything I'll come and see you."
Gina nodded. "Thank you."
"Do you want anything to drink. There's a coffee machine just down the hall if you do."
"No, but thank you." She sat down and suddenly noticed her hands. "Erm, is there anywhere I can go wash?"
The nurse looked at her hands and nodded. "Yes, of course, there's some toilets just down the hall to your left. Are you okay, do you need anyone to look at you?"
"No, its okay, its not mine." her voice wavered slightly before she mentally shook herself and stood up, a forced smile on her face. "Thank you. To the left did you say?"
He nodded and waited til she had gone before closing the door and leaving Craig sat on his own.
Gina didn't take long, knowing that she couldn't leave Craig on his own for too long. Coming back into the room she found him with his head in his hands. Shutting the door quietly she saw him glance up before resuming his position. She sat down next to him after pulling the other chair close.
"He might die." His voice was low.
"Yes, he might." She agreed, not one to pull any punches. That wasn't what he needed right now. "But he's in the right place and with the right people and he's a fighter. He wouldn't have got this far if he wasn't."
"He said sorry to me. I might never get the chance to say it to him."
"What for?"
"For pushing. For not listening. For trying to only see what I wanted to see."
"It seems that you *were* right. He said he wanted you, Craig. Only that he was confused and scared and to be honest who wouldn't be in his position, eh?"
"I think I'm in love with him." Craig's whispered confession came along with more silent tears and Gina seeing, drew him into another embrace. "How could I be so stupid?"
"Stupid?"
"Falling for another officer. A junior one at that." He laughed humourlessly. "I'm a sad old man."
"You are no such thing, Craig Gilmore." She shook his shoulder gently. "I was with that young man and I heard what he said and the way he said it. He doesn't hate you Craig, he," she paused. "He was scared and he was thinking of you. He was in pain and scared and the last thing on his mind was telling you that he was sorry, that he didn't want to hurt you."
Craig took a shaky breath.
At that moment the Doctor knocked on the door and came in. "Hi, Inpsector Gold is it?"
She nodded and stood. "This is Sergeant Gilmore. How's Luke?" She took a mental breath and squared her shoulders.
"He's still with us." He smiled briefly at the look of relief that flooded her face. He didn't see the grip on the other policeman's hand behind her back that tightened at those words or the expression on his face as he was bent over and looking at the floor hs eyes closed.
"Don't get me wrong, he's still in a serious condition. He lost a lot of blood and there was damage to his kidney and stomach from the bullet. We've got him stabilised for the moment but he's critical. We're moving him up to ICU right now. I suggest if he's got any next of kin, you might want to contact them. The next twelve hours are going to be critical."
Gina nodded, already trying to remember what family Luke had. She honestly couldn't remember him ever really mentioning them.
"The blood loss caused a lot of complications and in essense his body started to shut down. Unfortunately he slipped into a coma before we managed to stablise him." Gina's heart sank. She knew what that meant and what the Doctor was trying to tell them. Brain damage to a brain starved of oxygen or blood. There was no telling what or how much had been done until he woke. If he woke. She let out a breath and nodded at the Doctor who had just finished speaking.
"When can we see him?" He knew that would be what Craig would want to know.
"Give us a little while to settle him in up there and I'll get one of the nurses to come and get you."
After he'd left she turned to Craig and kenlt on the floor in front of him. "See, Craig, he's still here, still fighting." She smiled gently.
It was ten minutes before they were allowed up to see him. They were warned before they went in but nothing prepared them for the sight of Luke trussed up to the multitde of machines that surrounded him. The heavy thunk of the respirator echoed in the room and Gina felt her heart go out to the young man. Still, pale and hooked up to tubes and wires, he looked all of about twelve years old; not the grown up police officer she knew he was. Looking at Craig, she watched him move closer to the bed, his eyes never leaving Luke's face.
"He look's so young," he whispered and she smiled at their similar thoughts.
"That he does. He always has done though. By far the baby of the relief wouldn't you say?"
Craig nodded, his eyes still riveted to Luke. "It's part of what makes me feel like a bit of a dirty old man. How could amyone like him, even look at someone like me? I'm almost ten years older than he is."
"Obviously, he thinks there's something there," she grinned. "Same with that Sean and Carl. You put yourself down Craig." She walked closer to the bed, putting a hand out to cover Luke's cool, pale one. "Besides, I saw the way he looked at you sometimes, when he thought no one was looking."
He turned sharply to look at her.
She shrugged. "Just because I said to leave things alone didn't mean I wasn't looking. It was up to Luke to make any move. Not me or you. It was between him and Kerry and in the end it was Kerry who realised." She glanced at him. "I mean, I don't know for sure, but it a good chance it was something to do with it don't you think?" Craig paused and then nodded. "And you did the right thing by waiting for him to come to you after that."
"But now..."
"Now, you may lose him. But you would have lost him before if you had pushed him; if you had run to him. He needed to come to you. He needed time and patience to figure things out. This is just fate's way of keeping us on our toes. It sucks, but then life always does."
"I never meant to hurt him."
"You didn't, Craig. He wanted you. Wants you still, I suspect." She smiled. "Of course, I don't know for sure, but call it womanly instinct."
~*~
Two days later and Gina Gold was walking back up the corridor to ICU. She'd just come from the station and was bearing cards and get well messages from those at Sun Hill. She turned into the room and smiled at the nurse on duty. Walking in she wasn't surprised to see Craig, dressed in civilian clothes and sat on vigil next to Luke's bed.
"Hey," she smiled.
He smiled back and gestured to the spare chair.
"How is he?" She put her bag down on the floor still holding the cards in her hand.
"The same." Craig gazed at the bed. "Nothings worse so there's that."
"That's good." She stressed forcefully. Holding out her hand she passed over the cards. "From the station. Everyone's signed it I think. There's a few single ones from others too." She watched Luke's still face. "They're missing him." She shifted in her seat. "Kerry's worried but she didn't want to come and see him."
"Why?" Craig was surprised.
"Hospitals; make her funny. Her Mum died in one when she was small. She was really uspet. She said she's try and come later today but I think she's still feeling a little awkward about everything."
"But Luke's..." Craig didn't want to say it, but both of them knew what he meant. Luke might not make it.
"She knows about you two, you now."
"What?" Craig's eyebrows hit his hairline.
"Oh yeah. Not want happened, if anything, because you remember I still don't know everything. But she knows you feel something for him and I suspect she knows he feels something for you too. You have to remember these womanly instincts Craig."
"I remembering and I'm getting scared of them too," he deadpanned.
She laughed. "She doesn't feel any ill will to you, or Luke either, for that matter. She just feels a little out of place I think."
"She needs to be here for him."
"I know."
"I'll speak to her later."
Gina nodded, she'd been hoping he would say that. "Well, I'm off home to get some sleep." She paused and looked meaningfully at Craig, who had the grace to look slightly shamefaced.
"I'm not on duty til tomorrow evening," he defended himself. "I swapped with Matt."
"Good." She got up. "I don't want to be propping my Sergeant up against the desk with sticks in his eyes. Wouldn't do for public appearance you understand." She stopped and looked at Luke, her gaze softening. "Let me know if there's any change will you?" she said quietly. "You've got my number."
He nodded, knowing that beneath all her fluster and balsy attitude she was really concerned about Luke. Everyone was. He gazed at the cards in his lap.
"Bye Gina."
~*~
Craig had just come off the phone from Kerry. He'd known she would be just arriving for her shift and had managed to convince her to come and visit later that night. Gina had been right, she had been worried and scared for Luke but also nervous as to her position. Craig had been gentle with her and reassured her that Luke would want her there. Neither had said anything about his position, but by the hesitation in both their voices, they both knew.
Walking back into the room he immediately checked on Luke and seeing no change sank into his usual chair by the head of the bed. He'd been tired earlier on, but the walk to the phone had woken him up and now he was feeling more clear headed than before. The conversation with Kerry had helped too. He hadn't realised how nervous he had been himself until he had actually spoken to her. Working at the same station and being one of her commanding officers it was hard to avoid her, but since the break up woth Luke, she had become cooler towards him and Craig, not wanting to stir the waters, had not asked. Having cleared the air somewhat, he felt lighter.
He moved his hand to cover Luke's, something he'd been doing a lot in the last two days and was somewhat startled to feel movement under his fingers. He sat forward immediately and stared at Luke's face.
"Luke?" he said softly. Nothing. He gave Luke's hand an experimental squeeze. Nothing.
But then, a few moments later, a tiny weak flutter against his palm. "Luke?" He reached over and pressed the call button, then lifting his hand to touch Luke's face. "Luke, can you hear me?" His every being was focused on the man in front of him. "If you can, move your hand, squeeze my fingers if you can."
Tiny, motions of Luke's fingers were all he got. But it was enough. When the nurse came in, Craig turned and smiled at her. "I think he's waking up. He's moving his hand." She immediately hurried to check the monitors before running out of the room to fetch the Doctor. When he returned he was waved away from the bed to stand back by the window. The Doctor hovered over Luke, peering at him and poking at the various machines. "Okay, Luke, can you hear me? My name is Doctor Ramsey. You're in hospital. I want you to try and squeeze my hand." A pause. "Okay, that's good, well done."
Craig stole a bit closer. Luke wasn't moving but he could see his eyelids flickering weakly against his pale face. Suddenly he emmitted a choking noise; his hand which had been resting against the bed rose up to shakily move towards his throat. "Hey, Luke, its okay." the Doctor quickly stepped in and caught Luke's hand. "You've got a tube down your throat. Its been there to help you breath. We'll get rid of it soon, but for now just relax and don't fight it."
Two unfocused brown eyes, almost completely dilated with the drugs in his system, stared out. Panic was flying across his face, his breathing forced. Craig stepped forward and took Luke's hand from the Doctor. "Luke? It's Craig. Just relax, okay? You're alright. Just relax." he stroked the short hair above his forehead. "Breath with the tube. It's there to help." His words and voice were low and soothing, his accent melodic and tender.
Luke calmed. The nurses and Doctors watched with a smile, knowing a magical touch when they saw it. His breathing relaxed and his eyes, though still unfocused, turned towards Craig.
"I need to check this readings and I'd like to do a CT scan but we'll get that tube out as soon as we can." He grabbed his notes. "I'll be back in a few minutes."
Craig nodded, never loosening his tight grip on Luke's hand. He smoothed his hair again and gazed into the still unseeing eyes. "You're going to be fine." He whispered.
Luke moaned softly and pressed further into Craig touch on his head. Craig smiled and stoked his thumb over the smooth skin on his forehead.
The Doctor reappeared and smiled at Craig. "Okay, we're going to get that tube out now, that should make you a bit more comfy Luke." The nurse with him moved up to take Craig's place, putting a tray on the table. It wasn't a pleasant experience having the tube removed, as Craig found out, but once it was out, he could see the tension leave Luke's face a bit. "I'll leave some ice chips to ease his throat, not too much though, his stomach won't be ready just yet." The nurse removed the tray and the tube and left the room. "I've booked a CT scan asap, Now Luke's awake I want to see if there's anything we should be aware of."
Craig nodded, his attention returning to the still silent Luke, his brown eyes now fixed unblinkingly on Craig. He sat back down and waited, returning Luke's silent gaze.
When Luke was taken up for his scan he dug out Gina's number and rang her to let her know Luke's progress. The string of curse words uttered in relief down the phone made him smile.
"Oh thank god," she said. "How does he seem?"
"He hasn't said anything yet." Just stares at me. He's still pretty much out of it on the drugs though."
"Ring me when there's anymore news. I'll ring the station and update everyone."
"Thanks, Gina."
"Craig?"
Ashe put the phone down he turned to see Kerry walking up towards him. "Kerry." He smiled. "How are you?"
She smiled nervously. "Okay. How's...how's Luke?"
He smiled. "He's awake. Just a little while ago. He's up having a scan at the moment." He gestured to the seats. "Here sit down."
"I'm sorry I didn't come earlier, but..." she broke off nervously. "How is he?"
Craig sat looking at his hands. "Rough. He lost a lot of blood. That's why their scanning him, they were worried about possible problems."
Kerry looked stunned. "Oh God."
"He was quiet when he woke up, but he seemed responsive." Craig smiled reassuringly.
"When Inspector Gold told me what had happened, I...I couldn't believe it. I was on nights, so I wasn't in. I didn't hear til the evening. I wanted to come down, but I...I was nervous, I..."
"Inspector God explained. It's okay, Kerry, really." He paused. "Look, they'll be a while, do you want a tea or something. There's a machine around the corner."
"Yeah, thanks."
It was nearly half an hour later when the two of them were still sat on the chairs in the corridor. Craig looked up as he heard voices.
"Luke's back." He stood up. "I won't be a moment." He walked down to greet the Doctor who smiled in acknowledgement.
"Hi. You'll be pleased to hear that the scans all look clear."
Craig closed his eyes in relief. "Oh, thank God."
"We're just settling him back in. You can go back in now if you like."
"Is it okay to take someone in, another friend from work has come to see him."
"Of course. Just be careful not to tire him out too much. I presume you'll be here til the end of visiting hours?" Craig blushed. "If you are I'll see you on the way out from my shift. I'll pop by and see how you are." Craig smiled.
Turning he gestured to Kerry who stood up and joined him, as he walked into the room. Craig walked over ot Luke.
"Hey there." He smiled warmly at Luke, who returned it weakly.
"Hey," he croaked.
"How are you feeling?" Craig asked gently.
"Like a truck ran over me." Luke closed his eyes. "Tired."
Craig nodded. "I know. " He took Luke's hand carefully. "There's someone here to see you."
Luke opened his eyes puzzlement in his expression.
"Kerry."
The pleasure that flooded Luke's face made Craig pause and he stepped back and motioned Kerry forward.
"Hey Luke."
"Hey." Luke's voice was wary, but pleasantly surprised.
Craig hung his head and left the room to give them some privacy.
Kerry walked out down the corridor. Craig stood to greet her. She smiled at him.
"Thank you."
Craig looked puzzled.
"For looking after him." She took a breath. "Take care of him." Craig blushed slightly. "I know you will," she continued. "But," she blushed herself and looked down. "I know, things have been difficult." She sat down. "I know things have been confusing." She took a breath. "I'm glad Luke realised when he did. I loved him; still do. I would have married him. Tried to make a life with him, but we would have been kidding ourselves. I was blind; purposely. I know the way he looked at you. He loved me; in his own way, but he was fascinated with you. He didn't want to admit it, what he feels, what he is, to himself let alone anyone else; and I'm not sure he properly has even now. But he has you and for that I'm thankful, because I know you'll look after him. You love him."
She looked at him as he looked at her, dropped his head and then nodded quickly. "Yes. Yes I do."
She smiled. "He loves you too." Her voice sounded soft, a questioning lit to it almost. "I don't think he realises it yet." She stood up. "He's still got a lot to think about, but he's in good hands." She smiled warmly at him. "I'll see you at work Sarge."
""Thanks for coming Kerry."
"No problem. Like I said, he's still special to me."
He watched her disappear down the hallway before getting up and going back in to Luke. Luke's eyes were closed but as Craig pulled up a chair, they opened and gazed at him peacefully.
"Thought you'd be asleep by now," Craig chided him softly.
"Wanted to see you before I dozed off again," Luke's eyes had closed though, his voice still hoarse and quiet. They rallied and opened again. "Were you here all the time? When I was out of it I mean?"
Craig nodded.
"Thought so. Thank you." He smiled, though Craig could see hims drifting off.
"Luke, go to sleep. Don't fight it. I'll be here when you wake again, I promise."
"Promise?"
"Yes."
Seemingly satisfied, Luke closed his eyes again and within moments was deep asleep. Craig sighed and smiled, relief flooding him for the first time in weeks it seemed. Luke was okay, he was awake, the scans were clear and he was talking. To him, to Craig. He wanted him there. Craig felt a silly smile creep up his face which he squashed with some difficulty. He knew there was a long road ahead but somehow his heart felt lighter than it had in weeks.
"Craig?"
Craig's head shot up from where it had dropped onto the bed next to Luke. "Hmmm?"
"I see I'm not the only tired person around here then." Luke's voice was filled with humour.
"No, you could say that."
"Have you been home?" Luke sounded more serious then, his eyebrows narrowing slightly.
"Um," Craig hesitated. "Yes.." The way it was said with more of a question mark at the end had Luke frowning more.
"How long have I been out? The Doctor made it sound like it was quite a while." Luke's fingers were playing with the edge of the sheet up by his chest, betraying his nervousness over the question.
"Two days." Craig said softly. "It's wedneday evening. You've been here since Monday morning."
"Fuck." Luke breathed.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better." He paused. "Still feel like a truck ran over me a couple of times but better than before." He smiled. "Better since Kerry visited me."
"Oh." Craig couldn't help it. It was out before he could stop it.
"Better since knowing you've been with me all the time." Luke looked at Craig, his brown eyes suddenly wide. "Thank you for that. It means a lot."
Craig smiled bashfully. "I couldn't leave you." He ducked his head embarassed. "I mean..."
"I know what you mean... and I like it." Luke stared at him seriously. He bit his lip suddenly and looked away. "Did Inspector Gold....did she...?"
"She told me what you said." Craig paused suddenly thinking. "Do you remember saying anything?"
Luke turned slightly red. "Erm...yeah." He smiled and looked up. "I think I told her to tell you I was sorry."
"Yeah." Craig smiled.
"And....." Luke swallowed. "I....."
"Its alright, Luke. It doesn't matter."
"Yes it does." Luke's voice was adamant, his eyes turning to bore into Craig's before ducking away. "I thought....I thought I wasn't going to get to tell you that I was sorry and that....that I ...." His eyes closed. "....I like you," he whispered.
"I like you too, Luke." Craig whispered.
"I know," He looked at Craig. "I know; and I wanted you to know that I was sorry for all the crap I put you through." He moved his hand slightly until it was covering Craig's. "I'm really sorry." His eyes glistened in the low lighting in the room.
"It's okay, Luke. Really."
"No, Craig." His voice wavered. "When I was lying there, I thought I was going to die."
"Luke..." Craig tried to interrupt.
"Everything," Luke kept going. He paused for a beat, searching for the right word, "fell into place. I realised what a complete bastard I've been. Selfish, thoughtless." A single tear slipped down his cheek. "I was scared, Craig." Craig moved forward, his hand taking Luke's more firmly. "You made me feel things." He closed his eyes before opening them and gazing at Craig steadily; Craig feeling as though he could drown in thier depths. "You still do," he whispered.
Craig stared at him. He reached up and stroked the short hair just above his forehead.
"Stay with me tonight?"
Craig nodded, smiling. "Of course."
"Til they kick you out anyway." He grinned.
Craig grinned back. "Like they have the last two nights." He had the grace to look sheepish.
Luke laughed softly.
~*~
Luke stayed in hospital for two weeks until the Doctors gave him the all clear to go home.
Under strict instructions though.
Looking at the list of what he was allowed and not allowed, Luke's eyes had crossed. Then of course came the question of who was going to look after him. Although the hospital were very happy with his progress, Luke was still very weak. His kidneys had been given a clear bill of health, as had everything else, but his wound was still very delicate and the damage the bullet did to his stomach meant that he was on a strict diet and much actual physical movement was restricted as well.
Luke was dying..of boredom.
Craig smiled as he watched Luke sat up in bed, for the first time in a week. He was an active young man, quite sporty and athletic and although he was still very tired and weak from the blood loss he had suffered he was not used to being quite so still for quite so long. The drugs he'd been on had been reduced, so he spent much more time awake now. Which of course meant he got bored a lot quicker now that most of his time wasn't spent sleeping.
He'd read; though not much of a reader, he'd done his best with what the hopsital had and what Craig had brought him in. He'd done puzzles, watched television til his eyes were square and completed all of the game boy Craig had had given him one Christmas by an enthusiastic nephew.
He was still pale though. Craig looked at him with a crictical eye. Pale and drawn. He'd looked like a ghost the first few days. He'd got more colour back now but he still could double as an extra from a Bram Stoker movie. He'd also lost weight. Not exactly fat to begin with, he now looked quite gaunt. Craig had no doubt he'd put that back on with no problem once he was allowed to eat normally, but spending two weeks on total bed rest and living off restricted hospital food had taken its toll.
Luke turned a sullen gaze on him. "Are we ready yet?"
Craig smiled placedly. "Just waiting for the Doctor to come and sign the papers and then we can go."
Luke flung his head back on the pillow. "I can't wait to get out of here."
"You couldn't tell," Craig smirked.
Luke turned back and stuck his tongue out. He sighed. "You try being tied to a bed for two weeks and fed off gruel."
"You were not tied down and it wasn't gruel."
"Yeah well, it might have well have been. In both cases." Luke sighed again. "Does this spare room of yours have a telly?" he looked hopeful.
"Yes it does." Craig smiled. "Even a remote too."
Luke shut his eyes and smiled. "There is a God."
Luke was spending his recuperation time at Craig's, staying in his spare bedroom. Luke's own family lived on the other side of London almost and his Mum's flat was only very small, on the top floor and not very suitable for a bedridden invalid. His Mum had been to visit Luke and although nothing had been said, Craig had detected a certain tension there. Nothing had been mentioned about a Dad though and Craig hadn't asked.
It hadn't been a long or hard decision for Luke to make. Craig had casually but nervously mentioned it one night after the subject of his hospital release had been raised. Luke had just cocked his head and said okay. There had been nothing more to it it seemed.
Craig had been nervous as to what people at the station would think, but when he had tried to raise the question with Gina she had just waved a hand and made a 'puffing' noise in his general direction. "Boy needs somewhere to go. May as well be at yours. You've got leave coming up haven't you." He'd nodded and informed her that he had already requested the time to be taken. "There you are then. Problem solved. Forget about what this lot here might think. You never know, it might be the truth eh?" She then winked at him and proceeded to shoo him out of her office.
It was fairly obvious to all those around them, that something was happening between the tow men. The Doctors and nurses all suspected although none had actually said anything. Nobody had been negative or rude though and Craig was eternally grateful to them, not the least for nursing Luke back from the dead almost. Everybody at work had been very worried about Luke even the likes of Matt Boyden and Des Taviner. Catty remarks and testosterone behaviour aside, loyalty among the relief rode high and although he knew eyebrows were being raised about his seeming hip-like attachment to Luke's side since the incident and now Luke moving in to be looked after post hospital care, so far that's all that had happened. Of course if things did develop between them and by God, Craig hoped they did, the work situation would have to be dealt with, by one or both of them transfering out to another station or another shift most likely. Those bridges however, as he looked at Luke tapping his fingers impatiently on his stomach, could be dealt with when they came to them.
The door sung open and Doctor Ramsey strode in. "Sorry to keep you waiting guys. Got caught up there."
Craig sat up, as Luke slowly and carefully swung his legs over the side of the bed.
"I can see you're all packed and ready to go." Ramsey smiled at a fully dressed Luke. Well fully dressed involving a loose fitting pair of jogging bottoms, an oversized shirt of Craigs and a big XL jumper over a loose fitting shirt, again borrowed off Craig. Secretly the sight of Luke in his clothes was doing nice things for Craig. He didn't say anything though, the knowing look on Luke's face after he's put them on, told Craig that he knew exactly what they were doing for him. "Can't wait to get out of here Luke?"
"Nope. No offense there or anything." He grinned at the Doctor.
"None taken. We rather prefer it if you didn't come back either. We rather like it when our patients want to leave. Means we've done our job well."
Luke laughed. "Where do I sign Doc?"
"Here and here." He unclipped a sheet of papers. "These are your after care notes. Read and study well. I don't you back in here after only a couple of days. The nurse has given you your pills and potions I understand." He waited as both Craig and Luke nodded. "Extra repeated instructions for those are included. Not that I'm paranoid or anything. Good to double check everything I think." He grinned. "Now, I've booked you in for an out patient appointment in three days time and I want another one three days after that. Once we're sure everything is healing up nicely we can leave it a bit longer. The nurse will be round to change the dressing daily for the first week and then every couple of three days after that. But we'll play it by ear." he took back the papers Luke had signed and smiled. "Right, you all set?"
"Uh huh." Luke nodded vigoriously.
Craig stood up and grabbed the wheelchair from the coner. Luke grimaced and eyed it suspiciously.
"No way you're getting anywhere without it champ." The Doctor got up and headed for the door. "Whether you like it or not. You've got the energy of a really limp lettuce right now. Give it a while and you'll be out there playing football with the best of them but right now the wheels are the deal."
Luke groaned and sighed as Craig parked it next to the bed. Fixing a subborn look on his face he allowed him to help him shuffle across to it and made himself busy straightening his shirt and jumper.
The Doctor grinned and saluting them, strode back out.
Craig grabbed Luke's bag and swung it on his shoulder and propping the door open, pushed Luke out and down towards the lift.
~*~
"Are you sure you're going to be alright up here?" Craig was halfway up the stairs, Luke advancing slowly in fornt of him. "Would you rather be down here? I mean if the stairs..."
"Craig, the bed's up here isn't it." Craig sighed. "I don't think I'm going to be leaving it for a while yet, so it doesn't really matter. As long as there's a loo on the same level, I'm happy." He turned and grinned lopsidely at Craig.
"Point taken." Craig tightened his grip on Luke as he manoeuvred another step. Once at the top Luke's tiredness became evident as he paused, his whole frame relaxing into Craigs supportive embrace. His breathing was quiet, but laboured and Craig could feel fine tremours running through his body at the strain.
"Okay, let's get you settled in." Craig rubbed his shoulder gently.
Once Luke was safely tucked in and the covers pulled up under his chin, it only took a few minutes and he was out for the count. Craig straightened the covers and folded the clothes Luke had changed out of. Now clad in loose fitting boxers and a baggy shirt that Gina had picked up from Luke's place earlier the previous day. Luke's other personal belongings were distributed between the chest of drawers and the shared bathroom next door.
He paused at the door, his eyes taking in Luke's peacefull expression. He smiled contentedly before remembering that he that he wanted to puta glass of water by his bed in case he was thirsty when he woke.
Gina called him later that night.
"How's he doing?"
"Okay. He's asleep at the moment. Dropped off as soon as his head hit the pillow."
"He'll sleep for a long time over the next few weeks, poor lad. Are you going to be alright taking care of him on your own?"
"I'll be fine. The nurse will be coming in to change his bandages and the Doctor will be doing house visits for the next few weeks til he's better to move. I'm quite looking forward to it actually."
"I bet you are." He could hear the smile in her voice and the leer on her face and knowing she couldn't see him allowed himself a grin.
"Gina. He's my house guest and he's here so I can look after him until he's well. I'm just doing what any work colleague and friend would do."
"That's your story and you're sticking to it." She laughed down the phone. She quietened then. "What have they said?"
"Take it easy. Lots of rest. He's got a special diet because of his stomach and a pile of pills and mile high."
"Lovely."
"As I said before a Doctor will be checking up on him and a nurse is going to come and take care of the bandages and bath the wound."
"What about the rest of him?"
Craig blushed hotly. "I...I'm..sure we'll...work something out...I hadn't....thought about...that." Craig stuttered, caught off guard.
"I'm sure you'll be alright." Gina laughed again. "It'll be bed baths for a while anyway." Shae took a breat. "Remember, if you need anything though, you've got my number, so don't be afriad to call. I'm that far away from you. Anyway, give him my best when he wakes. You've got a week's leave haven't you?"
"Yes, I'll be back on wednesday."
"Good. Take care Craig."
"Bye Gina."
Craig tapped lightly on the door. "Luke?"
"I'm up. Well awake anyway." Luke's groggy voice came from inside.
Craig walked in carrying a tray. "Sleep well?"
Luke nodded, stretching carefully. "S'comfy in here." He suddenly caught sight if the mug on the tray and frowned. "What's that?"
"Soup and bread."
Luke pulled a face."Sorry Luke, but that's all you're allowed at the moment. Doctor's orders."
Luke stuck his tongue out but allowed Craig to help him sit further up in the bed and balance the tray on the bed tray on the covers next to him. "I've put it in a mug as I thought it'll be easier for you to hold. Not being able to have anything on your lap," he added as an explanation. Luke nodded and picked up the mug, sniffing at its contents. He looked up. "have you eaten yet?"
"No. I was just dishing mine up now."
"Come up and sit with me." he waggled the TV remote. "I have telly."
He looked so eager and bright-eyed that all Craig could do was grin and nod. 2I'll just go and get it."
Luke took another careful sip of his soup. For all his complaining about the food, Luke could feel his stomach already rebelling against the feeble amount of food he's had.
He glanced over at Craig who'd brought his own dinner up and was now perched on one of the comfy chairs he'd dragged in from one of the other rooms. His tray was balanced on his lap as he watched the film they'd managed to find on one fo the channels. Whilst his attention was taken by the TV, Luke took the chance to study the tall Welsh man. He still had trouble getting his head around the feelings this man created in him. Craig was tall, good looking and with the most wonderful voice he'd ever heard. Melodic and soft; when he'd been out of it at the hospital he'd lived off that soothing voice.
But he'd fought the attraction to this man from the very first moment he'd met him. When he'd felt the stirrings of something other than just friendship or work colleagues. He'd denied it for so loing. Scared and confused. But now; now he couldn't see one good reason to fight what his mind and body was telling him. Oh, he was still nervous, but now, after facing his own possible death, suddenly everything was put into perspective. Everything was slotting into order of importance and the fear of loving the unknown, of facing the truth about is own sexuality was suddenly not so scary. He was drawn to Craig, in a way no man every had before. Or maybe he'd never let himself be.
He settled back, his food forgotten as he watched the play of light on Craig's face from the screen. The way the shadows higlighted his soft lips and unruly hair. Strong shoulder and surprisingly soft but strong looking hands. He found himself staring at hem, as Craig paused in his dinner, currently engrossed in something in the film.
"Luke, have you finished?"
"Huh?" Luke's head tilted up.
"Have you finished?" Craig nodded at his cooling soup.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry. I haven't eaten much, I'm afraid."
"It's okay." He grinned. "I won't take afront at my handy talents with a tin opener. You're not going to want much for a bit. Give it time."
Luke grinned back as Craig took the tray from the bed. As Craig leaned in he took a breath of his aftershave as well as Craig's own scent. Noticing Luke's eyes were closed, Craig paused as he pulled back, his heart suddenly beating a little faster. He put the tray on the floor and picked up his won dinner again.
"So when are you back in work?" Luke asked reaching for a glass of water which Craig had put within easy reach.
"Week today."
"What? You've taken a week off?" Luke sounded surprised.
"Of course. Can't let you nurse yourself now can I?"
"Well, no. But I didn't think you'd be taking a whole week." Luke plonked the glass down. "That's almost all your leave gone now isn't it?"
"Well, yes. But it's all for a good cause. Anyway, all I would have been doing is going back to rainy Wales to visit the family. Much preferable to spend it with you." he bluished suddenly, realising what he had just said.
Luke flushed a little himself but felt a little glow at Craig's words. "Thank you." he looked sincerely at Craig. "That really means a lot that you're doing this. It really above and beyond the call of duty for a sarge."
"But not for a friend."
They gazed at each other for a moment, a look telling more than words could at that moment before both looked away; Luke at the film, even though he has lost the plot almost half an hour ago and Craig to his dinner.
Later, when Craig was watching the titles move slowly down the screen he looked over and saw Luke's eyes wre closed. He got up and switched off the TV. Quietly, he took the two trays out and placed them on the landing. Going back in, he gently pulled the covers further up around Luke, who was ousnd asleep, his breathing deep and even. Craig gently ran his fingers over his forehead and softly whispered, "goodnight."
~*~
The next week paased peacefully. Both Craig and Luke fell into a relaxed routine. The nurse came to check on Luke and change his bandage. Passing the bedroom door one morning while she was there, Craig had accidentally caught sight of the thick stark whiteness that covered most of Luke's stomach. He'd flinched and looked away quickly.
Luke sent most of his time watching TV and reading. Craig had brought him a selection of magazines and he was now over half way through a book of Craig's, after bugging him to bring some up from his collection in the living room. The TV ruled his day though. "I am now a certified expert on day-time telly," he boosted proudly on evening, a false humouress and slightly glazed look on his face. "Go on ask me *anything*." Craig had dissolved in laughter as Luke had proceeded to quote from every daytime program there was.
Craig spent most of his time catching up on jobs around the house and the small garden he had, that he'd put off for months, as well as paperwork. Sometimes he brought it up to Luke's room for company. The time they spent together was important though. Most nights they watched TV together, Craig bringing his dinner up on a tray. They played cards and games and talked. It was quality time, relaxed, without the pressure that always seemed to exist at work. The underlying tension still existed but now that they had both acknowledge it was there, there seemed no rush to force it. Luke was happy to enjoy Craig's attention and get used to his feelings towards the strong Welsh man. Craig was allowing his natural protective instincts a little freedom whilst being aware of not pushing Luke too much, desperate not to make the same mistake twice.

When Craig was due to return to work at the end of his week off, Luke had to laugh at Craig's mother hen routine. It was the evening before and Luke, having had the all clear from the nurse to start moving around the house a bit more was lay out on the couch silently snickering at Craig who was slowly winding himself up into a tight knot of anxiety.
"Craig, will you please sit down. You're making me feel dizzy." He grinned at Craig, who sank down into the armchair.
"Sorry," Craig smiled and sighed. "I just.." He paused, unsure of how to wrod what he was feeling. "I'm just a little nervous." He chuckled. "I have no idea why."
"You've been couped up in here a whole week looking after a bed bound invalid with nothing else to do but shop, cook, mend and talk to someone who hasn't seen the outside world for what seems like years." He groaned the last word.
"You're hardly cut off. You never turn the TV off for a start."
"Yeah, but I think it rotted my brain. There's only so much you can watch without turning into Dale Winton." He snorted.
Craig laughed softly. "Point taken." He leant back in the chair and stared at Luke. "I suppose I'm just worried about leaving you here on your own. You're still not well."
Luke waved a hand in the air. "I'm not going to be *well* for a good few weeks, if not months. Not really. I'm okay, Craig. Really. The Doctor is coming over tomorrow with the nurse for a check up. Besides I'll probably sleep most of the day after they've gone. I've been really awake today, so I'll probably be out of it tomorrow. It seems to go like that." He lay his head back on the couch and closed his eyes.
"I've laid out some food for you upstairs, such as sandwiches and fruit, so you don't hve to move at all." Craig relayed. "There's plenty of water and besides, I might pop home lunchtime. It's not that far, I can be here and back in an hour."
Luke raised his head and just rolled his eyes.
~*~
Luke was just reaching the top of the stairs. His dressing gown was wrapped around him, but just as he reached the top step and Craig put a hand out to steady him from behind, Craig's fingers caught soft warm flesh where Luke's T-shirt had ridden up under the gown.
"Oh, sorry." Craig blushed and withdrew his hand quickly to safer, covered territory.
"It's okay," Luke said softly. His breath had caught in his throat at Craig's unintentional caress, tremors that had nothing to do with the exertion of climbing the stairs, had run through him at such a quick and innocent touch.
Once he was in bed and had said goodnight, Luke lay awake thinking of the way that such a simple touch had made him feel. Even though he'd spent a week in Craig's house, he'd han't been any more undressed in front of him than his boxers and T-shirt. The nurse who came over had taken responsibility for washing him after an embarrassing question towards them both on the first day. Part of him had been both relieved and disappointed at that. Excited and embarassed at the same time.
He sighed and pulling the sheets up tried to relax into sleep.
~*~
When Craig was ready to leave the next morning, he checked again, all the things he had left out for Luke during the day. He stood and watched as Luke slept, his chest rising and falling evenly, his face relaxed and peaceful. It was almost like a dream having him here. Oh, not the way he had come to be there, that was something out of a nightmare, but just the fact Luke was here in his house in his spare bed was enough to make him wonder whether or not he was dreaming.
Softly, so as not to wake him he leaned over and gently laid a tender kiss on his temple, relishing the warmth of Luke's skin. Luke mumbled and shuffled in his sleep, but did not wake.
Smiling, Craig turned and left.
~*~
"Luke!"
"In here."
Craig walked into the living room to see Luke lay out on the couch munching on some biscuits.
"Hey, how was work?"
"Quiet. For a change." He sat down in a chair. "Few drunk and disorderly and a flasher."
"Nice." Suddenly, Luke sat up a little straighter and cast a worried look at Craig. "Okay, how 'Honey I'm Home' did that sound." He mock shivered and chucked a biscuit at Craig who deftly caught it and took a bite.
"How many of those have you had?"
"Few."
"Not too many I hope. One you're not supposed to be snacking and two, you'll spoil your appetite."
"Yes, Mommy." Luke rolled his eyes and chucked another biscuit at Craig, which fell down the chair.
Craig gave Luke a look before delving a hand down to retrieve it. "What do you fancy anyway?" he said getting up and wandering into the kitchen.
"Don't know. Anything but soup or fruit. The Doc lifted some of my dietary restrictions so I can have something different tonight," he called, hopefully. "There's a note on the side for you I think."
Craig shrugged out of his coat and hung it on a hook on the door and cast his eyes about until he saw the paper on the kitchen table. It was in the Doctor's handwriting and was addressed to him. Luke was right, he'd lifted much of the restrictions that Luke had been under and with a sigh of relief noted that it would make Luke's, and therefore his, life much more tolerable from now on.
A sudden thought fleeted through his mind. Poking his head through the door he asked, "Luke, how did you get down here?" There was a warning note in his voice.
"Relax; the nurse helped me this morning. I've been a good boy." He grinned at Craig.
"Good." Craig's head disappeared again.
After dinner, Luke prodded Craig for details about his day. Craig knew Luke was getting restless being constantly stuck in the house. He eagerly listened as Craig told him the various happenings from the day in more detail than before. In turn Luke told Craig about the nurse's visit and what the Doctor had said. He'd been very pleased with Luke's progress, saying that he was healing up remarkably well was and should be up and more mobile soon. Luke said that with such relief in his voice that Craig smiled.
"Not before time," he commented.
"What, are you getting fed up with me?" Luke's voice was partly joking, but Craig could discern a slight note of worry in his tone.
"Not at all. I just know how cagey you've been over the last three weeks."
"Sorry," Luke smiled. "You know I've really appreciated being here." He looked at Craig, his eyes dark in the subdued lighting in the room. "I...," he paused, a slight tension suddenly filling the room, "I know it's been, difficult over the past few months and you do not know how sorry I am that I behaved the way I did."
"It's okay, Luke." Craig's voice was gentle. "I understand."
"I don't." Luke's eyes held a calm sadness that hit Craig's heart hard. He got up and moved towards the couch to kneel by Luke.
"You were confused. It's difficult," he paused, remembering his own teenage years, "to face up to what you're feeling. Especially when its at your age. I knew when I was fourteen who I liked. It felt natural; not to others amittedly, but to me it did. I don't think I fully realised how difficult it was for you to suddenly be faced with feelings towards another man." He quirked his lips and looked at the floor, silence reigning for a moment. "What do you feel now?"
He risked a glance upwards and saw Luke gazing at him. "Still a bit dazed," Luke replied, "but I know now that I was hiding behind Kerry." He swallowed and smoothed the blanket over his legs. "When I asked her out, it was just after you asked me to go for a drink and I think I panicked. When I slept with her, it was you that was in my mind and when I asked her to marry me, it because I was trying to push you away. She doesn't hate me, you know," Luke's voice held the soft lilt of amazement. "When she came to see me at the hospital. I wouldn't have blamed her if she never wanted to see or speak to me ever again, but she was worried and concerned and," he bit his lip, "she told me you'd look after me." He looked shyly in Craig's direction.
"She's a very astute woman, is Kerry." Craig agreed.
"Can I have a hug?" Luke's voice was low, so Craig almost missed his words. "I know that probably sounds childish..."
Craig levered himself up and with a finger to Luke's lips, shushed him, and carefully moved to sit next to Luke, shuffling him across so there was room on the cushion next to him. Gently he took Luke into his arms and held him, relishing the warm body next to his. Luke relaxed completely into Craig's arms. He felt the strength in Craig's arms and couldn't believe how good that made him feel. Craig's heat and scent invaded his senses as he nuzzled his nose and face further into Craig's open collar. He took a deep breath, his arms tightening around Craig.
Pulling back slightly, Luke felt Craig's hand come up to touch his face, his tumb caressing his cheek. It felt natural and so very right to inch forward those last few centimeters and touch his lips to Craig's. So soft. That was the first thing that went through his head, the same thing that had all those weeks ago in Craig's office the first time. Craig responded gently, caressing Luke's lower lip with his own. Soft, gentle, tender. Luke felt like he was drowning. Tilting his head slightly, he invited Craig to deepen the kiss, which he did; sliding his tongue into Luke's mouth to softly explore.
When at last they parted, they remained in each other's space, soft breath ghosting across each other lips.
"Wow." Was the only thing Luke could breath.
Craig smiled and ducked his head to quickly brush his mouth against the kiss swollen lips.
"I never..." He broke of, unable to put into words what he was feeling. Wide brown eyes drank in Craig's face, his expression. "I'm so stupid," he whispered.
"No, Luke, you're..."
"No I am," Luke insisted gently. "I was so scared of this?" He grinned at Craig. "This...is so *right*. How could I be afraid of feeling this?" His fingers wandered up to Craig's face, gently tracing his cheek and chin and mouth. "Feeling you." He breathed into Craig's skin as he pressed his forehead to his. "Is it too late?"
"For what?" Craig gently grasped Luke's head from behind his fingers running through the short strands there.
"For us?" Luke whispered.
Craig closed his momentarily before pulling back a fraction and catching Luke's gaze. "I've wanted you since the very first moment I saw you. I once told Gina, that I had met the one. *The* one. She didn't know who it was, not then. At least I don't think so," his lips quirked. "I've never felt this way about anyone else in my entire life. Not Sean, not Carl." He faltered," I don't want to scare you; or push you; but what I feel for you *scares* me."
"I'll take that as a yes then." Luke chuckled, breaking the tension slightly, caressing Craigs hand at the same time to let him know that he was just teasing him.
Craig laughed gently. "Yes."
Later that night, Luke had managed to convince Craig that he wanted to sleep in his bed that night.
"I'm not about to pounce on you in the middle of the night. My pouncing days, or nights I should say, are a long way off still." He tilted his head and applied the puppy look, which then softened slightly. "I think I just want to be near you."
Craig had caved, as he'd known he would. He had started to realise that he had about as much resistance to Luke Ashton as ???.
"I don't want to hurt you, what if I knock you in the night?"
"I'm not made of glass Craig. I'm healing well. You can have a look if you like."
Craig flinched unconsciously.
"It's not that bad." Luke's face had dropped.
"It's not that," Craig hurried to say. "I...I'm just scared of seeing what....nearly killed you," he finished quietly.
Luke nodded in understanding. He waited a few moments before making a decision and slowly brought his hands to the hem of his T-shirt and lifted it up. Craig watched with morbid fascination as Luke slowly and carefully unstuck one side of the crisp white bandage. The area underneath was bruised and slightly swollen still, but the actual wound was small. Smaller than Craig had imagined. Although he knew his imagination had somewhat probably got the better of him in the dark moments he worried about it. But there was the neat circle of tiny stitches, just to the side of his stomach. Still red, but even to Craig's eyes it looked well.
He raised his gaze to Luke's, who carefully restuck the bandage and lowered his T-shirt.
Without saying anything they both got into bed and with surprising little fuss or rearranging, relaxed into each others arms.
~*~
In the morning, the first thing Luke was aware of was the incredible warmth and comfort that surrounded his body. Lay tilted to the side, his back was resting against something warm and soft, but firm; something that seemed to have moulded itself to him. An arm was slung across his hip, a hand resting loosely near his thigh.
He sighed and relaxed into the embrace, closing his eyes and reveling in the experience. God, Craig was comfy.
He voiced these thoughts when he felt Craig sigh and shift, little whisps of breath tickling his neck.
"Not too bad yourself," Craig mumbled into his nape. He tightened his arm around Luke, pressing himself even closer. He felt Luke make a small pleased sound and push back against him.
"I can't believe I was trying to ignore this," Luke whispered before sighing deeply. "If nothing more than for the fact you make great central heating." He smirked and snuggled closer.
Craig chuckled and flinging a hand out to the duvet dragged it up further to their necks. "I have evening shift duty today. No reason to get up. Any objections?" Craig rubbed his nose against Luke's neck.
""Pruff." Was Luke's only reply as he carefully rolled over to face Craig. He ducked his head under Craig's chin and snuggled in determinedly.
Craig smiled satisfied and closed his eyes.
~*~
It was mch later in the day before either of them woke again. It was hot, almost claustrophobic under the duvet when Craig opened his eyes again. Luke was still curled up tightly against him, one hand clutched around his waist and his top leg firmly wedged in between Craig's. He smiled as he felt the tiny puffs of air against his collar bone. Luke was still sound asleep and Craig was loathed to wake him, but his bladder was calling to him and if he didn't get out from under the duvet soon he was going to spintaneously combust. He'd forgotten how much heat two people in the same bed could generate.
Slowly and carefully he started to slide out from under Luke. With a snuffle and what could only be described as a cross between a whimper and a moan, Luke tightened his grip on Criag's waist, burying his nose further against Craig's neck. God knows how he didn't suffocate butied against him like that, as he was fairly certain he hadn't moved all night. Craig hardened his heart and continued to pull away. As he did so, sleepy brown eyes blinked up at him, still glazed heavily with sleep.
"Craig?"
"Hey Luke," Craig said softly. "How are you feeling?"
"Ummm, sleepy. Very comfy." He said sleepily. "Why are you trying to escape?" He flexed is hands against Craig's waist and chuckled when Craig jumped, ticklish.
"I'm not trying to escape. Just needing to visit the men's room. Plus the fact you've heated this bed so muc I fear I'm going to get a tan if I stay under here much longer."
Luke laughed softly. "Go on then," he said, lossening his hold, "go take a pee. I'm not moving for anything. And it's not hot. Its just nice." As Craig slid out to sit on the edge of the bed, he turned to see Luke pull the duvet up to his ears, pressing his face into the pillow Craig had just vacated and effectively burying himself. Craig couldn't help but get the idea that Luke was inhaling his scent from the pillow and when Luke turned his head and smiled knowlingly at him he knew he was right. The pressure in is groin increased. Quickly he stood up and went to the beathroom. COming back he looked at the bed and grinned to see Luke had disappeared under the covers almost completely.
Grabbing a pair of jeans and a T-shirt he padded dwonstairs tot he kitchen to put together some breakfast. He put some toast under the grill and put the kettle on to boil. Leaning back on the counter he sighed contendly. He'd slept well and for the first time in what seemed like years, he felt happy. His spirits were lifted and the grey cloud that had hung over him for so long had gone. Upstairs in his bed was the young man that he was in love with, had been I love with what seemed like his whole life. The young man that was, thank God and every other deity that would listen, alive and getting better with every passing day. The idea that he had almost died was someting that haunted his dreams still. Would for a very long time he guessed.
Turning to the toast he buttered it and poured two teas. Checking the post, he carried it up to the bedroom where he put it down on the side table before gently shaking Luke's shoulder. Or what he hoped was Luke's shoulder, he couldn't be sure under all those covers. Slowly, an untidy mop of brown hair emerged and Luke, red faced and still very sleepy, blinked up at Craig. He grinned lazily as he smelled the toast.
"You're wonderful, he said scooting round carefully in the bed to sit upright. His hair was sticking upright and in all diorections and Craig couldn't help but grin and try and flatten them down. Luke grinned at him and rubbed his eyes. "I feel so...out of it."
"It's no wonder, we've slept for over twelve hours."
Luke stared at him and then the bedsidfe clock. "Wow." He reached out to snag a piece of toast. Carig lifeted his own mug of tea and passed over Luke's as well.
Taking a sip, Luke shuffled a bit to get comfy. "When are you on tonight?"
"Not til eight."
"Good." He smiled at Craig. He dropped his gaze and nibbled on his toast. "It felt really right sleeping here with you last night. " He looked up at Craig, his brown eyes earnest and full of guilty honesty.
"I know," Craig smiled.
"I'm out of words to describe it. I think I'll just settle for sitting here looking like a love-lorn teenager." He bit his lips and blushed.
Craig grinned and putting his mug down on the floor, lay back on the bed next to Luke and leant over to bite into his toast. He chuckled. "Well you do sometimes act like...."
Luke's eye's widened and he swotted at Craig's head. "Hey!"
Craig chuckled again.
Luke gazed down at Craig, his eyes soft. He reached out a hand and gently ran his fingers through the soft strands of brown hair. Craig looked back up at Luke befire looking down at his hand which is running gently along Luke's chest, his touch whispery light. "I can't believe you are here," Craig said softly. "I keep thinking I must be dreaming."
"Well you're not." Luke reached up his own hand to touch Craig's, caressing his fingers softly. Craig glanced up to meet Luke's gaze. "I'm here and ther's nowhere else I want to be." He smiled. "I'm going to loose any street cred I ever had, whcih probably wasn't much anyway and say that this is like coming home." He blushed and Craig thought he had never seen anything more beautiful.
"Can I kiss you?" Luke's question was soft. Craig looked up. He leaned up until he was level with Luke, his eyes flickering down to Luke's mouth as Luke leaned in. Soft feather light touches against his mouth, butterfly lisses that gently nibbled and sucked on his lips. When Luke ran his tongue along Craig's bottom lip requesting entrance, Craig opened his mouth, allowing Luke's tongue to slide in to meet his own. He moaned low in his throat as he felt the soft, slick glide exploring his mouth. It wasn't hurried or eager but neither was it any less passionate.
Luke pulled away, running his tongue overhis lips and smiling. "I love kissing you."
"That's good. Because I love kissing you." Craig leaned back in again and captured Luke's mouth. He pulled back a fraction. "Addictive even." He ran his hand, the one that wasn't supporting his weight, round the back of Luke's neck, drawing him in close. Luke's eyes drifted shut, his hand lifting to rest on Craig's chest as he opened his mouth to him.
They kissed for quite a while, just enjoying the closeness of being with eac other. Luke slid back in the bed, Craig following him. It was only when Luke pulled back to ease a twinge in his side, that they parted. Craig frowned, until Luke pointedly grabbed his toast and taking a big bite. Craig smiled and grabbed his own.
"What time are you working to tongiht?" Luke asked between mouthfuls.
"Til two." Craig said after finishing his tea. "I was thinking that now you've been given the all clear to do stuff, that maybe you'd like to go out somewhere this weekend? I'm not working again til monday night."
"Oh yeah." Luke's eyes lit up. "Please. That would be great." He finished his last bit of toast. "Where?"
"I don't mind. Somewhere not too stressful or energy consuming I'd think, but than the choice is yours."
"Shopping out then." Luke siad with a grin. "We could just go to the park and ramble around then go for a meal." He bit his lip. "Kinda like a first date."
"Maybe a movie afterwards?" Craig grinned, getting into the spirit.
"Yeah." Luke smiled widely.
"Do you mind if people see us together?" Craig asked quieter.
Luke gazed at him. "No," he said after a moment. "Three weeks ago I would have said yes. Three weeks ago I would have said a lot of different things. But no, not now. I don't care what others think. I mean I do, but not enough to be bothered by them."
Craig gazed at Luke, his eyes full of love and admiration. hea leaned down and brushed a light soft kiss across Luke's lips. "I love you," he whispered.
"Good. Because I love you," Luke whispered back, returning the kiss gently. He closed his eyes. "I really do." He pulled back slightly. "I still have to tell my family though."
"They should know."
"I know. I don't like lying to them." He unconsciously shuffled closer to Craig. "I thinkmy Mum already suspects something. Since Kerry and I split anyway. She hasn't said anything but I can tell." He smiled ruefully.
"I don't know. I'm not sure how she'd take it if I turned up with a boyfriend already in tow. I mean I'll tell I'm with someine, with you, but I think it'd be better if I'm alone when I actually tell her." He looked up at Craig and touched a finger tip to Craig's jaw. "Thank you for offeringthough, that really means a lot."
Craig nodded. He raised a hand to Luke's jaw and touched his fingertips to the smooth skin of Luke's skin, only lightly dusted with stubble, even now, this late in the day. "It'll be difficult at work, you realise that? Are you sure you want people knowing. It's a big step." Craig looked uncomfortable as he said this. He wanted Luke to be out with him, to be no restrictions in their being togther, no hiding or lying. But he also knew that it would be a major changing point in both their lives and their work. A major step for Luke to take. Plus there was no way both of them could stay on the same relief or even at the same station really, there would be too many problems.
Luke gazed at him seriously. "I know it is. It's a good part of what has been scaring me for these last few months. I'm worried about what will happen, don't get me wrong. It petrifies me. But I know what I want now. I'm no confused or scared about what I feel anymore. I want to be with you." He paused to wind his fingers around Craig's. "I don't think we need to make a big annoucnment or anything." He grinned as images or large pink banners floated through his head, "but if one of us transfers out, because I know both of us can't remain where we are, then that's obstacle overcome. And if anyone asks I won't deny it. I won't deny that I'm with you."
"They'll get suspicious if one of goes. They'll want to know why." Craig smoothed the soft skin on the back of Luke's hand.
"Then we tell them. With me staying here, half of them have probably drawn that conclusion anyway, you know what they're like. All of this is probably a moot point anyway."
Craig nodded. "Most likely," he agreed. "Depends how many people know you're here."
Luke shrugged. "Kerry, Inspector Gold."
"Well if Kerry has told Robbie then the whole relief will definately know." Craig smiled.
Luke chuckled. "Yeah."
*****
That coming weekend, Luke was up bright and early, unusually so as most mornings he had to be literally pried from the mattress, as Craig had quickly found out. But that morning he was up and in the bathroom, washed, dressed and in the kitchen putting on the kettle by the time Craig had roused himself up to pad sleepily into the shower.
He walked bleery eyed into the kitchen, rubbing the back of his neck and gazed at Luke bemused.
"You're eager," he commented.
Luke turned round and grinned. "Coffee?"
Craig nodded and continued to button up his shirt. Luke allowed his gaze to drift past the quick view of Craig's chest as he turned back to the now ready coffee. For the past week, since they had been together, because of Luke's tender wound, they had been restricted in what they could do together physically. For the most part it had been mainly cuddling and kissing. Lots of kissing. They had made out more in the last week than either of them had as horny teenagers. A fact Luke had pointed out one night cuddled in front of the TV. Mild groping and heavy petting was as far as they had gone, despite sharing the same bed, both needing to take things slowly. But both were now ready to take things further.
Luke was nervous, very nervous if he admitted it to himself, but his desire for Craig was strong. Physically and emotionally he wanted to be as close to the tall strong Welsh man as he could be. Wanted to give himself to him. The desire to feel Craig over him, on top of him and inside of him was building steadily. He'd never have thought he would be that strongly pulled towards a man that way, but the idea of Craig taking him sent shivers up his spine in a delightful way. Half of him was glad of the time his still healing injuries had bought him, but the other part was becoming very impatient.
"So are you ready for toady?"
"Oh yeah." Luke grinned, as he handed one mug over to Craig. Buttering otast he looked over to the other man, his face animated. "So what's first? I was thinking about going tot he park like we said? I've checkedthe fridge and we've got loads we could stick in a picnic."
Craig smiled at Luke as he went about doing breakfast and just sat back to watch him, perfectly happy, listening to him chatter on. Luke was a sight to behold in the kitchen. One wouldn't think it to first meet the young man, but he was very competent where food was concerned. Craig had learned that since Luke had bee up and about and busying himslef in his kitchen. He'd come home to many a good meal in the past week. Oh, he wasn't a gormet cook, but he knew all the basics and a bit more and cold give Craig's Mum a good run for her money. Of course she would still win but then she had had the experience of Craig's brothers and sisters, not to mention his father to coppe with. Sandwiches, fruit, biscuits and other various objects found their way into a basket that Craig vaguely remembered being in the back of a cupboard somewhere. By the time Craig had finished his coffee and toast, Luke was stood grinning, basket packed and coat ready on the back of his chair.
"Definately eager." Craig deadpanned.
******
Three hours later and they were sat on a bench in a park somewhere. They had just finished their walk and had gone back to retrieve the basket from the car and were now sat overlooking a lake, basking in the strong sun. Luke was sat crosslegged, the basketperched next to him. Craig sat the other side, one leg up on the seat, facing towards Luke.
"Okay, how camp do I feel now?" Luke grinned over at Craig, screwing his eyes up against the bright light of the sun.
"How do you get that?" Craig laughed, taking a sandwich.
"I'm sat in the park with my boyfriend on a saturday afternoon, having a picnic after having a walk."
Craig laughed again. "That's not camp. But does it bother you?"
"No." Luke replied immediately, stressing the word as he tucked into an anpple. "Who says there isn't a camp side of me anyway." He winked at Craig. "There could be."
Craig reclined on the bench and regarded uke. "Really?"
Luke grinned and waggled his eyebrows. Craig chuckled again. He leant his head in his hand, resting on the back of the bench and gazed at Luke, enjoying the view. Luke was wearing a simple white T-shirt and light blue jeans. The sun was out and highlighting Luke's hair, which had grown out slightly in the last few weeks, thicker than Craig had ever seen it. Smooth skin, deep brown eyes, slim but a strng physique. Although due to the dietary restrictions and the stress of the past few weeks had taken its toll and he'd lost a few pounds. Craig knew he was probably wearing a really sappy grin but at that point he didn't care. He was happy. Very happy.
Luke turned and caught him, flashing him a smile in return.
After the park they made they're way to the cinema for the afternoon matinee, deciding to go early so they could go for a meal later in the evening. It was nothing special, just a small Italian restaurant where they were given a private table at the back where they could talk. The significance of the first date activities was not lost on either of them and both men were having one of the best days of their lives.
After desert, they both silently sipped their beverages, Craig a dry white wine, Luke a sparkling apple juice. Both were flushed with food, the atmosphere and each other's company. One of Luke's hands, fiddling with the stem of his glass, inched closer to the middle of the table, towards Craig's. As the back of his fingers touched Craig's he glanced up, eyes intense. From the look in Craig's eyes he kewn that Craig had felt the same tingle of electricity that he had. He wanted Craig, he knew that without a doubt. Had for a while and while the idea still unnerved him he wasn't worried of afraid.
Seeing the warmth, love, lust and desire reflected back at him from the brown eyes gazing at him, he felt a tremble of arousal deep inside him. Anticipation, excitement, lust and desireof his own flushed through him, most importantly love. He projected all of this into his own eyes and saw when Craig recognised it.
'We need to go home' was his one singular coherant thought. Unbeknownst to him, it was exactly the same thought running through Craig's mind.
As they both quickly finished their drinks, Craig gestured to the waiter for the cheque. Neither of them broke eye contact.
As soon as Craig had closed the front door behind them and turned the lock, Luke plastered himself full length against Craig, gently pushing him back against the door. Craig's arms had instinctively gone around Luke's waist, holding the firm warm body close, as his mouth dipped to find Luke's mouth.
It was passionate but not hurried, intense but not rushed. A low moan rose up deep in Luke's throat, his arms around Craig's neck, leaning up into the strong embrace. Tongues delved, teeth nipped, lips slid back and forth as each tried to devour the other. Raising one hand up to cradle Luke's head, Craig moved his attention down the side of Luke's jaw and onto his neck, listening to the heavy laboured breaths next to his ear.
So soft, he thought as he nuzzled and nipped the skin there. Fingers were plucking at his own shirt, Luke's eyes closed, his head tipped back. One hand rested against Craig's chest and pushed slightly. Craig pulled back, eyes scanning Luke's face, a hint of worry crossing his features. But all he could read in Luke's face was desire, love and heavy arousal. Deep brown eyes looked at him and whispered one word.
"Bed."
"Are you sure?" He nuzzled his mouth along Luke's chin. He knew that what they would be doing there tonight would be a lot more than what they had over the last two weeks. What he was reading in Luke's eyes was a desire for more. A lot more.
Luke nodded. "I want you. All of you." He ran a finger along Craig's bottom lip. "I'm nervous yes. I won't deny that. Who wouldn't be? But I want you Craig. I can't wait any longer. I need you. Need to feel you." He replaced the finger with his mouth, drawing Craig's tongue out and sucking it in a knowingly suggestive way.
Craig groaned and started moving forwards, forcing Luke to step backwards with him. They stumbled together, somehow making it to the bedroom despite refusing to let go of each other. Bits of clothing had started to be removed, socks, belts, shirts. As Luke's shirt was thrown to the side, Craig stepped back slightly to run his eyes over Luke's chest, relishing the beauty of the body in front of him. He raised a hand to ghost over a firm pec, feeling the smoothness fo the skin, the firmness of the muscle.
"You are so beautiful," Craig's voice was soft. Luke had never been called that before. Never thought he'd like it. But from Craig's lips it sounded so honest and heart felt that it made him feel warm inside, cherished.
Raising his hand he placed them on Craig's chest, slowly undoing the buttons on his shirt and slipping it off his shoulders. So very broad and strong, was Luke's first thought. He stepped forward, acting on instinct and after laying his hand down on the skin, leaned forward to kiss the warm chest.
Craig groaned softly. His hand raised up to caress the side of Luke's neck. The other rested on his waist, drawing him in closer, pressing against him. Luke continued to nuzzle and kiss Craig's chest, growing bolder with every move. Gentle, tender kisses were laid across the whole expanse of skin.
Craig's hands were stroking now, caressing every available piece of skin he could reach. He couldn't get enough of Luke. He pulled Luke's head up to latch onto his mouth again, delving deep and forcefully. Luke responded, welcoming and kissing back with equal fervor. Luke could feel Craig's hardness, pressing against his hip. His own arousal was almost painful against the contriction of his trousers. Pushing his hands down he found the button of Craig's trousers and fumbled for a moment with the belt and clasp. After a few seconds they were undone and he was pushing them out of the way. Craig's hands joined in then, moving away from Luke's back and helping to slide them done his legs. After they had slipped out of the way, he reached over to Luke's and with deft fingers, unzipped and had pushed Luke's down and away to.
Luke let out a small sigh as the pressure around his cock was relieved slightly. Craig's fingers found their way to the hard organ and Luke whimpered into Craig's mouth as his cock was taken in a firm but gentle grip. Craig's mouth left to nip and kiss his neck again, sucking on his skin in a vampiric fashion almost.
Pressing back he nudged Luke towards the bed, Luke sitting when he felt the bed behind his knees. He scooted backwards as Craig climbed onto the bed after him. He lay back, Craig stretching out next to him, arms wrapping around him as they regained the contact they both craved. Craig leant over, careful to mind the still healing scar on Luke's stomach. The bandage was gone now, just the still angry red line of the entrance wound visable on the pale skin.
With sudden slowness and infinate tenderness Craig paused and carefully traced his fingers across the scar. Leaning down he kissed it gently, before trailing equally gentle kisses all the way up Luke's torso until he reached his mouth again and taking it in a firm and demanding but passionate kiss.
Luke groaned and reached his hands down to push Craig's bozers out of the way. He needed to see and feel all of the other man. Craig pushed his body up slightly to give Luke more room, wriggling to get them all the way off. Luke pulled back as they were removed and gazed at the vision before him. Craig blushed slightly but didn't move. Luke bit his bottom lip gently as he reached out tentively to the hard organ in front of him. He glanced up at Craig, light shining in his eyes, as he took the hard cock in his hand. "So gorgeous," he whispered.
Craig sighed softly as Luke began to move his hand slowly, playing with his grip and motion, exploring and taking his time.
TBC.
