Fun With PHDs

dreamt by Vicki/Nylessa

Involved: Alexander Roguefeather, Ranger Stormwing, Calhoun "Hunter" Flockhart, some random twelve-year-old kid, and myself.

Note from Vicki: PHDs are Portable Holographic Devices, a little something Rebecca and I came up with in our IOC role-plays which enable our characters to look like humans. No, I'm not going to try and explain why we'd need them to... ;)

It started off with Alex coming to stay at my place. Apparently Hunter was helping him with his training in some way, because they were out in our driveway practicing moves, and Alex was getting fed up. He said that he didn't have to do any of this stuff, because it was a waste of time, and (after an intermission of complete and indescribable weirdness), stalked off.

And then I was seeing things from Ranger's POV, skipping ahead in time something like a week or so. There had been no sign of Alex since then, and he and Hunter were one of many teams out searching for him. I think Querida had a brief cameo at one point, but I can't really tell... there was a lot of seemingly random bits and pieces breaking the continuity of the dream.

Anyway, Ranger took Hunter to a nightclub (they were both using PHDs) that he and Alex often go to when Alex comes to stay. They met up with one of my classmates, and asked whether there was a guy of Alex's PHD description, and Alan (the classmate) pointed out a couple of guys, but neither was Alex; or at least neither of the guys recognized Ranger or Hunter. Then again, as Ranger remarked when they left, it's easy enough to change your PHD configurations, so really, Alex could be -anyone-.

It seemed like a wild goose chase. And they we did a major cut to a group of -- well, basically they were teenagers playing truant from school, or so I gathered. They were hanging around in some abandoned area, and one of them, Caucasian, blonde hair with brown streaks, was creating illusions. Yes, this was Alex, although in my dream I only sort of half knew it at the time. Apparently he'd discovered a way to use the PHDs to create solid holograms around him, and he and the street kids were having a lot of fun scaring the hell out of anyone who came near them ;P And Alex of course showing off as much as possible. Eventually the kids decided that this was a cool talent and should be put to good use -- for mugging people.

And then it was raining, it was dark, and Alex was by himself with a younger kid from the group earlier. Don't know where the rest had gone. But Alex leapt out of hiding and grabbed the person coming along the street -- no use of illusions, guess he figured he didn't need them.

That person was ME. And I recognized him immediately, despite the changes.

And the first words out of Alex's mouth were, "What the hell are you doing out here? You could get mugged... or... uh... bye." He took off running before I could react, and the kid, whose attitude to Alex bordered on hero-worship, went after him.

I contacted Ranger and Hunter, who managed to track Alex to a huge tract of native bush that has appeared in my dreams so many times I'm astonished that it isn't a real place; and it's the same landscape each time, with only minor differences. Anyway, they started into the bush, searching. Meanwhile, Alex had finally decided it was time to go home. I'm not sure what made him decide that, but I think it was the knowledge that he was likely to be in a LOT of trouble if he didn't ;P Problem was, he couldn't shake the kid. He ended up yelling at the boy and shoving him to the ground, then took off running, leaving the kid in the bush.

The kid (I think his name was Jamie, and he was only, like, 12) tried to follow him, but got stuck somehow.. I think there was a fork in the path, and Alex just plowed straight ahead, while the kid took the left fork. In any case, Jamie got himself completely lost, and then ran into Ranger and Hunter, who for some reason had switched off their PHDs. After the initial panic, they managed to calm the kid down, and explained what was going on.

Alex was no so far away that he didn't hear any of this, and -- although I'm sure he'd never admit it -- felt a little bit guilty. So he also switched off his PHD, and turned back.

After that, though, I'm not sure what happened, because it all blurred shortly before I woke up, although I got the impression that Alex managed to apologize to Jamie without actually apologizing (it's a knack he has) and Jamie was allowed to stay at my place for the weekend.
