HOSPITAL/

HOSPITAL/NIGHT

We see TITO, standing in the hallway of the maternity ward. He is alone, his face is worn and tired-looking, his eyes reflect a sadness that's never been there before. His clothes are wrinkled. He puts his hands over his face, as though trying to block out the events of the night.

Pray God you can cope.
I'll stand outside
This woman's work,
This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man.
Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

Slowly, he moves towards the window, peering into it. As he looks, a nurse walks over to his son's bassinet, picking him up and holding him so that Tito can see him. Tito reaches out, placing his hands on the glass of the window, his eyes never leaving his son. As he watches the baby, tears run down his cheeks.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

We fade into HAYLEY'S hospital room, where LORNA sits a vigil by her bedside, holding Hayley's hand tightly. She reaches out a hand to smooth the hair off of Hayley's forehead, her hand resting on Hayley's cheek for a minute. As she takes her hand from Hayley's face, she clenches Hayley's hand to her own cheek.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking:
All the things I should have said, but I never said.
All the things we should have done, but we never did.
All the things I should have given, but I didn't.
Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away...

As we fade back outside, by the window of the nursery, Tito still stands watching his son. JOSIE and GARY round the corner, holding hands, their faces grim. They stop as they see Tito. He doesn't speak to them, just looks at them silently, then turns his attention back to the baby. Josie and Gary look at one another, then Josie walks up to Tito, putting her arm around his shoulder. He falls into silent sobs as Gary joins them, his hand resting on Josie's back. They watch the baby.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

We cut to the inside of Hayley's hospital room, where Lorna looks up in a panic as the machines around Hayley begin to beep. Outside, Tito, Josie, and Gary watch as doctors and nurses run down the hall to Hayley's hospital room.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

Inside the room, Lorna is pushed back as the doctors begin to work on Hayley. She walks jerkily backwards towards the door, where Josie, Gary, and Tito are now standing and watching the doctors and nurses. Lorna hugs herself, crying openly. Tito watches with a wide-eyed look on his face, Josie and Gary hold each other's arms for comfort.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking
Of all the things I should have said, but I never said.
All the things we should have done, but we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should have given, but I didn't.
Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

The machines continue to beep. As we focus in on Hayley's unconscious face, we:

FADE OUT
