Mulder was assigned to the X-Files, the cases the FBI condiders
unresolved, as unexplainable with the official human acquantainces:
inside the X-Files we can find phenomenons going from UFO sightings

Mulder has a particular interest for such cases, even because of
her sister, Samantha, supposed to be abtucted in childly age and in
misteryous circumstances.

Scully was assigned to the X-Files to control Agent Mulder's activity
involving the X-files. Differently from Mulder, she's skeptycal
about paranormal phenomenons, whom she often gives a rational explanation.
Case after case, Scully's scientific knowledge and good reputation
inside the Bureau helped Mulder in his unusual work, giving him
protection too.
Dana is Bill Scully's daughter, a Marines Captain, and she's a very
respected and estimated agent inside the FBI.

Cigarette smoking man
The most terrifying and ambiguous character of The X-Files, he's always
monitoring Mulder and Scully, appearing unexpectingly to obfuscate
their investigations' results.
He has a lot of power inside the Government too, he knows the most
unthinkable truths, he seems to be the one who can manage the entire
world.
Just to know a little more about him, being not sure,
we had do wait season 4, where it's been revealed, in the episode
"Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man", that when he was young
he could have committed Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK's omicide.
He's appearently killed in the episode "Redux II" but, at the end of
season 5, we find out he's still alive. His return, then, carries out the
revelation of his involvment in agent Jeffrey Spender's paternity.
The Cigarette Smoking Man is played by the actor William B. Davis.
