BRETT TRIES NEW WINGS
Brett Climo quit The Flying Doctors a year ago because he "wanted more than just TV credits" - and his new career is right on tract.
Brett, 27, is now starring in the MTC's Hayfever, a Noel Coward "comedy of bad manners", at the Playhouse. Not a classically-trained actor, Brett's stage debut hasn't been easy. He's had lessons on voice projection and movement techniques.
"I was nervous about the audition," he says. "I felt behind the eight ball, that I have a lot to learn. But it's given me a real respect for what acting encompasses."
Brett left Nine's The Flying Doctors and tookon a semi-regular role in ABC's G.P. - he's appearing soon in two more episodes - and says: "G.P. is the most satisfying TV work I've done in three years.
"I wanted to perform for, and respected by, a different audience. That's not passing judgment on those other audiences, but I'd also like to be accepted in other areas of the industry and that's what I've been working to do."
Set in the Twenties, Hayfever is about the harrowing stay of four guests at the country property fo the eccentric Bliss family. Says Brett: "The comedy comes from the way the guests are treated by the family."
"Noel Coward was a social critic and these characters are based on real people. Our director, Rodney Fisher, is very in tune with his actors' emotions and the emotions of the characters. That's what I'm learning."
