Chapter 23

Sonny stared at Brenda in disbelief. He looked away, put his hand to his forward, dropped it, and looked back at Brenda. "I'm not sue where you're heading with this Brenda, or that I like where this is going."

"I'm just trying to grasp a little bit of reality here." She walks away from the sink. "Do you even realize what just happened here? She gestures towards the table. She then half smiles, "Besides the fact that it was almost amusing watching Jessi play you for a fool."

Sonny, who had turned from the sink and watched Brenda walk around the kitchen, replied, "She what? How?"

"Didn't you notice that when she came in here, she didn't even bother to look at me. She wanted answers and she knew she wasn't going to get them from me, so she pulled her "poor me puppy dog eye" routine on you and you fell for it hook, line, and sinker," Brenda said as she smiled and laughed briefly.

Sheepishly smiling, "I did, didn't I?"

"You did."

"She's good." Brenda nodded in agreement. "How do you resist those resist those eyes?" He asked questioningly.

"Believe me, when you're around her long enough you'll be able to resist them." Brenda turns serious again. "She didn't buy what you said, and neither do I."

"What do you mean? What don't you buy? Is that why she just left suddenly?" He looks toward the kitchen door worried.

"No, that's not why she left." She's quiet for a minute before she continues. "Did you listen to yourself when you were talking to Jessi? So you even realize what you said meant to me?" She asked, staring deep into his eyes looking for answers she wasn't sure he could give her.

"I told her the truth. I would do anything to protect my family."

"Anything? You would give up on us to protect us?" She says raising her voice to almost a yell.

This surprised Sonny and he couldn't figure where she had gotten that idea. He had given up on them? Never. Not in this lifetime. "Give up on us? I never said that, where did you come up with that!?" He replied, and his voice was raised to a yell.

"I got the idea from you. What happened to getting through this together? Where do you get off thinking that we would be better off without you?" She said trying to keep her voice calm in a feeble effort to keep Sonny calm and to not alarm Jessi.

Sonny calms down a little when he sees her point. "I don't know. I'm just making suggestions to keep everyone safe. When everything goes down, I'll be the likely target. If I'm away from you and Jessi, the bullets won't be flying in your direction." He offers as an explanation.

"Sonny, do you honestly believe that? What difference does it make if you're around or not? If I remember correctly, the last time the bullets flew, I was the intended target, not you." She turns away and shudders at the memory.

His heart was breaking as he watched Brenda shudder. It was his fault that she was in danger then and now. He didn't know if he could live with himself if anything ever happened to her or Jessi because of him. He got up and wrapped his arms around her, but she pulled away. "I'm sorry, for that Baby."

"I don't want your sympathy, Sonny. I want you."

"I want you, too Brenda. I want us. I want this family."

She turns around to face him. "Then stop being scared. That's what you are. You said it yourself. You have everything you ever wanted in life and you're scared that someone is going to take all away from you. That's what has always happened to you, but Sonny, this time it is for real. I'm not going anywhere; Jessi isn't going anywhere. You're the only one talking about going anywhere. No matter where you go, we will all be targets, there's nothing you can do about it. Take Robin's advice and cherish every moment you have with your loved ones."

Sonny goes to sit at the table once more. He puts his elbows on the table and buries his face in his hands. He knows she is right. He was scared. Everything he ever wanted was right there in front of him. He just had to take hold of it and never let go. He wouldn't let any outside forces tear them apart this time. They were going to get through this together. He removed his hands from his face and looked up at Brenda who was now standing beside him. "You're right, Brenda. I'm scared that everything around me is just too good to be true. I don't care if it is, I'm not letting go."

With misty eyes, "You're not leaving?"

He nods his head no, in agreement that he's staying. "Sonny Corinthos is here to stay."

Brenda bends down to hug him. "And Brenda Corinthos is glad he is." She says into his ear.

Sonny places his hands on her face. "I love you Brenda Barrett Corinthos. I believe in us, together as a family. Do you believe me?" She nods her head yes, and a tear starts to fall from her eye.

"Yes, I believe you. I love you Sonny Corinthos." Sonny pulls her face closer to his until their lips meet in a passionate kiss.
