Chapter 24

A little later in the morning, almost early afternoon, Sonny has decided to go pick up his stuff at Luke's. He wants to say good-bye to Jessi first, except he can't find her. She wasn't downstairs, in her room, or in Brenda's room. He wasn't sure if he should be worried about this or not since he wasn't aware of any hiding places she might have. "Brenda, where's Jessi?"

Brenda walked out of the bedroom where she had just finished putting on day clothes. "Did you look in her room?"

"Yeah, and she's not there. She's not downstairs either." Sonny answered with a twinge of worry in his voice.

Oh God Brenda thought, she's doing it again. She hadn't done this in over a year. She suspected this was happening earlier, but hoped her mother instincts were wrong. Jessi's life had been turned so upside down in the last few days, and Brenda felt like she should have been prepared for this. Jessi was like Sonny in so many ways it scared her sometimes. She had two ways of dealing with emotions---let it all out at once especially if she was mad, or keep it all in her until whatever was bothering her consumed her. Jessi was probably so confused right now with her father suddenly in her life, just being released from the hospital, and the mentioning or Robin at breakfast. Jessi hadn't taken Robin's death well. She'd been through counseling, but she still had her moments. She knew exactly where Jessi was; in Robin's room, that were she always went to sort things out.

"Brenda? BRENDA?" Sonny said desperately tried to get her attention. His hands were on her shoulder and he gently shook her to wake her from her thoughts. "Brenda do you have any idea where Jessi might be?"

"I know exactly where she is." Brenda said to a puzzled Sonny as she walked away from him and down the hall and around a corner. He followed, and was surprised when she opened a door to reveal an extra bedroom. He'd assumed that the door had led to a closet. This room must have been Robin's. Brenda had said she had lived here, but where was she now? Had she gone back to Paris? Practiced medicine somewhere else? He was sure that if she were still in town he would have seen her by now. The room was carpeted with a light colored carpet, had a dresser, a desk and a bed in it. The walls were bare. The desk had a couple of books about Paris on them. The dresser had two pictures on it, one of Robin, Stone, Brenda, and him and another of Robin, Brenda, and Jessi. Jessi looked a few years younger in the picture so it wasn't recent. The room had an odd atmosphere; it was almost friendly if it didn't feel a bit eerie, which made Sonny shiver slightly.

"Jessi, honey are you in here?" Brenda called calmly into the room. The slightly open closet door shut suddenly. Brenda walked over to the door and knocked gently. "Jessi, please open the door." Silence. "Honey, please don't shut us out." Silence. "Jessi please talk to us." Again, silence. Why does she have to be so stubborn Brenda asked herself in frustration? Probably because she has two stubborn parents she thought as she answered her own question. She turned the knob to try to open the door, but Jessi had blocked it somehow. "Jessi, come on open the door please."

Sonny, not sure what was gong on, but wanting to help went over to the door. Brenda moved over to let him try to talk to Jessi. Maybe he was the one who could get her out of her shell.

Inside the closet Jessi heard more knocks and then her father's voice, "Jessi, it's Daddy. Please come out and talk to us." He went on to try to coax her out of the closet, but Jessi ignored them. Why couldn't they leave her alone? She didn't want to talk right now and if she went out there, mom would make her talk about her feelings. Like she wanted to do that. Then her she heard the magic words from her mom, "Honey if you don't come out I'm going to call Dr. Collins." That did it. She didn't feel like talking to him right now, not that she didn't like him, but she didn't feel like being analyzed. She removed the chair that was propped up against the doorknob and came out of the closet. Brenda went over to her and pulled her into her arms.

"Jessi what's wrong?" Brenda asked as Jessi defiantly squirmed out of Brenda's embrace.

"Nothing!" Jessi answered adamantly. "I just want some time by myself and you have to assume that something is wrong with me. Why?"

"Because you don't normally go locking yourself up in closets unless something is bothering you, now please tell me what's wrong so I can help."

"You can't help me! No one can. Can't you see that?"

"I can't see unless you tell me, honey. Does this have to do with Robin or Daddy?" Sonny winced when he heard
