Chapter 19
Sonny, sitting on the couch, stared at Brenda, who was still standing across from him with the coffee table between them as a barrier, with shock. "You didn't just say…" He trailed off as Brenda nodded her head yes. "No you didn't." He said as if saying it meant it he didn't hear right. But he knew he had. Maybe I misunderstood her, he thought desperately, but then again how could you misunderstand what he had just heard? In her own words she had said, they were going to kidnap her, hold her for ransom, starve her to death, force themselves upon her, then brutally slash every part of her body until she couldn't cry in pain. While contemplating all this, he had buried his head in his hands then slid then down his face; his eyes no longer showed shock and confusion, but instant rage.
"Sweetheart, are you okay?" Brenda asked cautiously as Sonny sat in silence.
"Okay? I'm not okay, not after what you just told me. That is the sickest thing I've ever heard. Brenda, those men want to kill you because of what your father did, not because of anything you did or because of anything… (pauses and more quietly) I did. How can you stand there so calmly and quietly and tell me this? Don't you even realize what you are saying? Kidnapping, starvation, emotional and physical abuse, rape, murder. What the hell was the purpose?" Sonny stopped to take a breath as his voice rang throughout the room. He had gotten up off the couch long ago and was now standing face to face with Brenda.
"Sonny, you're taking this all out of context," Brenda said calmly in hopes of calming him. This had been the reaction she had expected. Anger. Pure anger. She understood, she had felt it too, she just had learned how to control it to her advantage. She had let the anger take over her every time she ran or was chased so instead of fear flashing in her eyes during critical confrontations, it was anger. You got better results with the anger than with the fear. She was sure Sonny knew this trick, how could he not with the business he was in? She just needed to remind him somehow.
"Of course I realize it. I've only been living it for almost half my life it seems. Stop yelling at me. Am I the one you're so furious with?"
Furious with her? Not really he thought. Maybe slightly concerning her role in keeping them apart for so long and a little for leaving Sara with people he didn't know without telling him. But as circumstances were at the time, she seemed to make decisions that felt right in the heat of danger. Hadn't he done that many times, without thinking of the consequences? So he couldn't be completely furious with her, just the circumstances caused be power crazed sick business men. Yelling at her wasn't doing her or him any good, he reasoned with himself.
His eyes softened as he looked at her and he felt an urge to touch her so he grabbed her wrist, his thumb slightly moving on the inside of her wrist as he spoke. "Sorry, for yelling. It's not you it's these damn insane circumstances. That and some of your reasoning makes me think you don't have any concept of the dangers you've been through or are headed to, and that scares me because I don't want to lose you again. Not after I just found you."
"You're not going to lose me, I promise," Brenda said as she trapped his hand in between both of hers, stilling his movements on her wrist. He was driving her crazy with the way he touched her and she needed to think with a straight head right now, not a distracted one. "Believe me, I know the dangers I'm in, as for my "insane" reasoning and calmness, they can't be that insane when they're what have kept me sane when I was afraid I would go out of my mind with fear."
"I guess not then, but I still don't understand how you stay so calm. Your life is on the line, and I don't like it."
"Well I don't like it when your life is on the line every single day either," Brenda said as she backed away from Sonny.
"This is you we're talking about, not me."
"Maybe so, but maybe I'm tired of talking about me."
"I'm not. I want to know more about these businessmen. I want to be sure you know how to handle yourself in case you come into contact with them again."
"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when, which happens to be later tonight. And believe me, she can handle herself just fine, I've seen her in action quite a few times." Sonny and Brenda turned towards the voice which belonged to Tom who was standing in the hallway that led from the back of the house to the living room. He had had enough of listening to the yelling going on in his front room without getting involved in the action. Julia was right behind him, with a look of apology on her face directed at Brenda. She could only keep him contained for so long, and she'd tried for as long as she could. Julia had to just roll her eyes as Tom winked at Brenda and said, "Right, hon?" He had to pick right now of all times to be in a flirtatious banter mood.
