Chapter 2

Nope. 'If onlys" couldn't be all bad if they meant a moment of pure pleasure staring at the bluest eyes Jacey had ever seen. But business was business, and things must be dealt with. She flashed her own smile and went on with the unexpected meeting after she let go of his hand. What a strong grip he had… Um, Jacey? Business first, daydream later. Business, business…she chanted to get her mind back on track.

"What kind of business, Mr. Jacks?" Jacey inquired, in an even tone hoping she didn't show her true emotions. She had to keep face. Father always advised her to never show her emotions out in the business world. It made you vulnerable, and vulnerability would be a downfall. It was one mistake he had made once, and she had to learn from it. Showing emotions in this case definitely wouldn't do if he knew she was shocked and disgusted to see him. But also slightly curious why he decided to come in person, and a little glad that he had. The latter she would never admit to anyone though. Glad to see an enemy? That was insane.

"Unfinished business concerning Jenkins Electronics."

"Unfinished business? Why I assumed that all business concerning J&J Jacks was finished before I took over Jenkins Electronics. What can I do to help you?" Stop staring at those eyes, stop staring at those eyes…Jacey chanted to herself. Unfinished business? What was he talking about? She'd gone over every scrap of paper concerning dealings with the Jacks family, and she wasn't aware of any unfinished business. As far as she was concerned Jenkins Electronics never had to deal with J&J Jacks ever again. She wished she could wipe the smug smile off his face that said I know something you don't. Not because it irritated her, but because it sent her mind straight to thinking about his perfect ocean blue eyes, which in turn to thinking about the ocean, and swimming in it, swimming with… um never mind, she thought as her dream went farther than her conscience would allow. Get your mind back where it belongs.

"Could I come in, please?" Jax asked with his accent slightly lilting the words. Jacey hadn't exactly paid attention to his accent before; his eyes were what had distracted her. Now she wished she hadn't noticed it, because it was starting to distract her too. So much so she wasn't sure what he had said. Something about coming in? In her office? Absolutely not. That was too dangerous. Well actually he'd been nothing but cordial, the only thing dangerous around was her mind. Now, if she could just keep it on track, she'd be fine.

"Sure. Have a seat right over there," she said as she gestured towards the chair in front of her desk. Jax walked farther into the room as Jacey shut her door. As she did so she caught Sally looking at her peculiarly. Great, Jacey thought. She's reading my mind, just what I need. I better get ready for her pieces of wisdom when this meeting is over with.

While still facing the door, she took a deep breath, ran her fingers through her thick curly red, excuse me, "auburn" hair, and tugged shirt half of her green pant suit to make sure everything was in its place. When she was satisfied with her outward appearance , she turned, walked to her desk and sat down. She looked at Jax, then past him, and glanced at her father's portrait that hung on the opposite wall. Just the distraction she needed. Father wouldn't be happy to have Jasper Jacks conversing with his daughter at his company. That's all she needed to remind herself to get back on track when her mind wandered. One more glance at Jax and she knew her mind was going to wander a bit more than usual.

"We're free of prying eyes and open doors, what exactly do you want?" She asked sternly, demanding and expecting an answer.

"I have a proposition for you?" Oh really? I have a few I could think of. Let's see...Oops, um sorry Father.

"It doesn't happen to be the same one you proposed to my father does it? Because if it is, I won't be wishy washy like he was. I'll tell you straight out now that my answer is no." There I did it, Jacey thought. A whole business thought without a thought of his eyes. Scratch that. They just started to twinkle even more. I think he's enjoying this.

"Ah, so you have learned from your father's mistakes."

"Yes, I would think that I have. I'm not going to let you swallow up this company into your conglomerate of businesses that you own, dismantle, and use for your own good. My father worked hard to get this company up and running as the big corporation it stands as today. I'm not letting just anybody come in and do whatever the hell they want to it to suit their own needs. This is my company now and I'm not letting it slip through my fingers." Jacey stated with conviction. She was aware that her voice had risen slightly and her eyes were probably flaring a deep green, they way they do when she was angry. Her feelings were showing and she didn't care. To hell with those damn blue eyes of his, he wasn't going to get his hands on her company.

"Angry Miss Jenkins? Something tells me you don't trust me."

"Do I have a reason to trust you?"

"Holding grudges like your father did isn't going to get you anywhere. Your prejudging what I have to say before I even tell you. Wouldn't you like to hear it? You might like it."

Jacey sat back and straight up in her chair, glanced at the portrait and got ready to refuse whatever he was going to say. "Sure, go ahead and tell me what you want. Make it short though, I'm already late as it is." At least I'll have the pleasure of listening to his accent and an occasional glance at his eyes as he presents his case.
