Asia News Week -> Tabu - Serenading The South
Working With Perfectionist Like Mani Ratnam, She Says, Has Been An Experience In Itself. Not Only Has. She Enjoyed Doing Anandam With Him, But Gained In A Lot Of Confidence. Inspired, She Is On To Doing More Meaningful Films With Some Of The Big Names Down South. Tabu Talks At Length About Her Southern Experience.

In recent months, Tabu has been making a lot of headlines. And not just because of a December Nikaah with producer Sajid Nadiadwala which she dismisses as a media concocted story. Who told you I am gettingmarried? Did I make any such statements? se fumes. It was the press which presumed that I was gettingmarried and even set the date. Give me break. When I decide to settle down I will tell the whole world about it. At the moment I have no such plans. So can we talk about something other than Sajid and a marriage that is not happening? So we talked about her work instead. Recently she has been making waves for her brilliant performance in Priyadarshan's Kaala Pani and Gulzar's Maachis.

And if the buzz is to be believed she has another ace up her sleeve in Mani Ratnam's Anandam. Tabu's eyes light up the minute you mention Mani Ratnam and she can't stop gushing about him. Working with him is an experience in itself. He is a real perfectionist who knows exactly what he wants and refuses to okay a shot till he is absolutely satisfied. He explains the most difficult scenes to you so beautifully that your performance becomes effortless. He really knows how to handle and mold his artists. I was totally relaxed when working with him and have gained immense self confidence from doing Anandam. Tabu seems to have made great impression on filmmakers down south. Unlike her contemporaries who didn't want to starry too far from Mumbai shores, Tabu grabbed the offers that came from down south. Since she is from Hyderabad, she can speak telugu fluently.

Tamil and Malayalam films needed a little more effort. But since I have a flair for languages, I have not faced any problems on that front. Of course my scenes in the South films are all dubbed. But on the whole, I have thoroughly enjoyed my sojourn down South, she avers. One of her favorite films is Kaala Pani. Though hers is a brief role fans insist that Tabu has never looked better and her sensitive portrayal of girl whose husband is dragged away from her moments after they had exchanged garlands has moved many to tears.

Is she aware of the recent controversy involving the film? Whatcontroversy? She asks. Well, apparently the freedom fighters have objected to Mohanlal licking Amrish Puri'sboots. Such a thing never happened even in the Andamans, they insist. I there is nothing objectionable about the film, she argues. I think it a very credible film and since it is on the freedom struggle I was proud to be a part of it. Priyadarshan, she admits is a director she enjoys working with. In his next film Virasat, which is a remake ofthe successful Tamil film Thevar Maghan, she is playing the role that won Revati the Filmfare award. It is avery important role for me, she avers. Mohanlal is another favorite.

Everyone knows that he is a brilliant actor but he is also gem of person. She confesses that recently she was offered a film with Mohanlal and Arjun in the lead. Since nothing has been finalized yet I don't want to talk much about the film. But this much I can say, I would love to work with such people time and again she says firmly. K T Kunjumon's Kaadal Desam which has her opposite two newcomers is now being dubbed in Hindi as Humse hain Muqabala and will be released soon. it is a frothy college romance with lavish stylized sets. The story has been set in an imaginary city. A R Rahman's music is mind blowing. The picturisation of a song cost Rs 75 lakh and it will leave you spell bound. For Tabu, the success of Kaala Pani or the failure of Maachis make little difference.

I am not really bothered with the ups and downs of a film at the box office as long as my performance is appreciated. I considered myself lucky that Gulzarji offered me a film like Maachis. Being a part of that film was the best thing to have ever happened to me since it was made by one of the most talented directors in Indian cinema had never in my wildest of dreams thought I would be working with him. I think even like Maachis and Kaala Pani, half the battle is won, she sighs. Today producers are queuing up to sign her, but it doesn't give her a high. She points out that this is just a temporary phase that all actors and actresses go through when their films get talked about. There are hundreds of others out there in the industry and everyone, I guess has his day, she smiles.

After Vijaypath Tabu is doing another film with Time video Dil Sacha Chehra Jhoota. An entertaining thriller in which she is playing a con woman opposite debutante Rajat Bedi. Dimple Kapadia plays Jackie Shroff's wife in the film. For the first time I am working with Dimple. Like Jackie, she too is a very warm and helpful person. I have still to get acquainted with her because we have only done a very brief schedule so far, she points out.

Tabu also has N Chandra's Shikari, J P Dutta's Border, Abbas Mastans Chhalia, a guest role in Deewana Mastana and an English film titled The Monkey Who Knew Too Much. And then of course there is Mani Ratnam's Anandam.
