Ryan & Gillian were blissfully happy, making plans for their future, and basking in their love and passion, while meeting for secret trysts at Wildwind’s turret. After many close calls, Adrian found out about their affair, and Tad began to suspect something was still going on between them. In an effort to ensure that Jake found out from her before he heard it from anyone else, Gillian decided to stop meeting with Ryan until she had a chance to speak to Jake.

However, their fear of losing each other and their desire to be together was too strong, and soon they resumed their affair. Both Gillian & Ryan had grown tired of all the lying and sneaking around, so she decided she would fly to Chechnya to ask Jake in person for a divorce. She went to meet Joe Martin, to confess the truth of her affair to him, only to learn that Jake’s helicopter had gone down.

Ryan & Gillian both agreed that now was not the time to reveal the truth. Gillian’s guilt at deceiving everyone, especially Jake’s family who adored her, began to grow, as everyone anxiously awaited news on Jake’s whereabouts. Finally, they received word that Jake was alive and well. Gillian was ecstatic, thinking that he would soon be coming home and she would be free to be with Ryan.

But Jake was determined to stay in Chechnya until the patients he’d been caring for were all evacuated. Ryan, who could no longer stand to sit idly by and put his future with Gillian on hold, decided that he would go to Chechnya himself to bring Jake home so that Gillian could obtain a divorce. Gillian was horrified at the idea and didn’t want Ryan risking his life in a war zone. But Ryan knew if anything were to happen to Jake, Gillian would blame herself. So he was determined to join Adrian on the quest to find Jake.

Gillian was terrified at the thought of Ryan going into a war zone. She begged him not to go, but he convinced her it was the only way to end the lies and allow them to be free to be together. Knowing of the dangers that awaited them, Ryan & Gillian spent one last passionate night together before he was to leave for Chechnya. However, Gillian still feared what might happen to Ryan, and not being able to sit home unaware if he was dead or alive, she insisted that she accompany him. Ryan told her it was too dangerous and that she mustn't go with him. They said a final tearful good-bye, and Ryan headed off.

Gillian couldn't bare the thought of sitting idly by while Ryan was in danger. So she stowed away and went with him to Chechnya. Once there, Ryan & Gillian found Jake, and all three were able to make it out alive. However, Jake was seriously injured and had to be admitted to a German hospital.

Jake's injuries created a whole new set of circumstances for Ryan & Gillian, and they both wondered how she would now ever be able to tell Jake the truth and ask for a divorce. Gillian was still deeply in love with Ryan and wanted nothing more in the world than to be with him, but when she found out that Jake's injuries were more than likely permanent, she felt honor bound to stay with him, as he had taken care of her in the past.

Ryan & Gillian separated and though they both still loved one another, each thought the other did not feel the same way. Ryan was devested by Gillian's choice to stay with Jake, and Gillian was hurt that Ryan would not wait for her.

Finally, after week's of separation, Ryan could take no more. At his yacht party to celebrate his new business, he reaffirmed his love for Gillian, begging her to leave to Jake. Then he informed Jake that Gillian only stayed with him because she felt sorry for him. Still torn between what she wanted and what she thought were her obligations, Gillian looked at Ryan and knew what she must do. That night she finally told Jake the truth - that she was in love with Ryan, and never would love anyone the way she loved him.

Ryan & Gillian reunited and spent the night on his yacht. The next morning, Gillian informed Jake she was leaving him, and they agreed to divorce. Gillian moved into the yacht with Ryan, who had bought the boat for the two of them.

Finally reunited, and openly together, Ryan & Gillian basked in the simple happiness of being able to spend time with each other. Then, Ryan surprised Gillian with an engagement ring, and they agreed to marry in a "beautiful, large wedding".

However, Jake was bitter and angry, and when he found out that some of the guests at Ryan's party had been unknowingly drugged, he accused Ryan, stating that it was all done in an effort to drug Gillian into sleeping with him. Both Gillian and Ryan adamantly deny the charges, but Jake remains determined to see Ryan behind bars. Now with the accusations flying, and the "evidence" mounting against him, Ryan and Gillian must, yet again, fight together to prove his innocence.
