When I See You Smile
by Brittany

Okay guys- Borrowing an idea from Blu here, this is going to be my
"interlude" chapter. A little taste of what's going on in each of their
heads. I've done both Liz and Lucky's words so far, and ya'll have seemed to
approve, but I'm kinda nervous about doing what they are thinking. So please
bear with me.

The Majestic Theater

Night-time sharpens,
heightens each sensation . . .
Darkness stirs and
wakes imagination . . .
Silently the senses
abandon their defenses . . .

Slowly, gently
night unfurls its splendour . . .
Grasp it, sense it -
tremulous and tender . . .
Turn your face away
from the garish light of day,
turn your thoughts away
from cold, unfeeling light -
and listen to
the music of the night . . .

Lucky: Looking over at Liz he brushes a lock of her hair out of the way,
only to see her beautiful eyes filled with tears. Liz looks at him and smiles
as the tears run down her cheeks. Then she turns back to the stage,
completely enraptured with the play unfolding before her. Having seen it
before, Lucky is getting more enjoyment from watching Liz's reaction to a play
that touched him deeply. "How could she have been right there in front of me
for all those months, and I never saw how beautiful she was?" Lucky asked
himself "Yeah, right Spencer, you noticed her alright, the way her legs
looked in miniskirts, the way she filled out those tight shirts she liked to
wear, the way her sexy eyes laughed at you and the way her sexy lips pouted at
you when she was mad." Lucky silently berated himself "You just never noticed
the real stuff. How the 'tough girl' image, was nothing more than an image,
how the hard-as-nails surface covered a heart of marshmallow, and how the
short skirts and tight shirts were nothing more than a way of getting YOUR
attention." Lucky sighed audibly "Man, I can't believe I was so blind, me,
Lucky Spencer. I always though I was such a good judge of character. How
could I have been so wrong about Elizabeth?" Lucky surrendered to the little
voice in his head "Look how wrong you were about your Dad, maybe you oughta
think twice about the next persons character that you judge, remember, three
strikes and you're out!" Lucky mentally batted the thought away "Shut up!"
he whispered to the little voice, unfortunately he realized his mistake when
Liz turned to him and said "what?" Lucky blushed bright red and cleared his
throat, "Nothing, I......uh....was just talking to myself." But he needn't
have worried, because Liz just nodded distractedly and turned back to the
drama onstage. "Another move like that and she is going to abandon you to the
looney bin." he thought, sarcastically.

Close your eyes
and surrender to your
darkest dreams!
Purge your thoughts
of the life
you knew before!
Close your eyes,
let your spirit
start to soar!
And you'll live
as you've never
lived before . . .

Softly, deftly,
music shall surround you . . .
Feel it, hear it,
closing in around you . . .
Open up your mind,
let your fantasies unwind,
in this darkness which
you know you cannot fight -
the darkness of
the music of the night . . .

Liz glanced out of the corner of her eye, relieved to see that Lucky was no
longer watching her so intently. "He watches me so closely, as if he's afraid
of how every little thing is going to affect me." Liz thought with a sigh
"In my heart I know that he loves me, but I wonder how long this niggling
feeling of doubt will last?" She thoughtfully chewed on her lip "How much
longer will I have to hear that little voice say 'He's just with you because
he feels sorry for you'? Why won't that feeling go away?" Suddenly the
little voiced appeared "Because you KNOW that he never paid a lick of
attention to you until you got raped, no matter how many schemes you pulled or
how many short skirts you wore, the only thing that got his attention was the
poor little raped girl." Liz shook her head and whispered "Go away!"

Lucky turned to her in shock "What did you say?" he asked incredulously

Liz, thought quickly and waved her hand in front of her face, "There was a
fly." she whispered to Lucky. He looked at her strangely for a second but
then shrugged slightly and turned back to the stage.

"Wow, that was a close one" thought Liz "Next thing you know he'll be worried
about my mental health, now where was I? OH! " Liz suddenly discovered her
abandoned train of thought "The reason that none of my schemes or sexy
outfits worked on Lucky was because that is not what Lucky was looking for, he
wanted to see the real me. And before, all I had given him was an image."
Liz cringed inwardly "an image I have to admit was NOT very nice, if I didn't
like who I was how could I expect him too?" Liz smiled at the memories of
their past few months together. "I know Lucky, and even if he felt sorry
for me, he wouldn't have spent the last six months becoming my best friend
unless he really liked me." Liz turned to Lucky and smiled at his handsome
profile, "And NO guy I know plans this kind of a date for a girl that they are
'just friends' with." with that thought, Liz reached out for Lucky's hand and
laced her fingers through his.

Let your mind
start a journey through a
strange new world!
Leave all thoughts
of the world
you knew before!
Let your soul
Take you where you
long to be !
Only then
can you belong
to me . . .

Luckys heart soared when Elizabeth took his hand. Every move she made on her
own, meant that she was one step closer to being free of the terror that her
rapist had left her with. "She is so strong," Lucky thought glancing over at
her, "I am so lucky that she is with me. I know she thinks that she couldn't
have made it through this without me, but I'm really the one that needed
her." Lucky thought back to the last 6 months, and the turmoil his life had
gone through. "Elizabeth is the one thing that kept me grounded, the one
reason I had for staying in Port Charles and hanging on. Without her, I
wouldn't have been able to reconcile with my parents, not that everything is
okay yet. But it's definitely on the upswing." Lucky thought of his brief
meeting with Luke earlier this week.

~~flashback~~

Lucky walked through the doors of Luke's, Luke was behind the bar with a
ledger and a calculator "We're closed!" Luke yelled irritably "Can't you
read?"

"I was stabbed in the side dad, not the eyes," Lucky said wryly. "Of course
I can read."

Luke's head whipped up from the books at the sound of his only son's voice
"Cowboy! What are you doing here? Are you okay? Is everything allright with
Liz? It's not your mother is it, or LuLu?" Luke started around the bar,
convinced that only a dire emergency would bring Lucky back to this place.

Lucky laughed and held up his hand. "I'm fine, Liz is great, I haven't seen
Mom lately, although that is going to change, and LuLu was her normal sweet
self the last time I talked to her."

Luke stopped and stared at his laughing son in amazement, "I never thought I'd
see you smile again in my presence, much less laugh, what's going on Lucky?"

Lucky became serious and ran his hand through his hair. "A very wise woman
recently made me see that I had to get past this, that what happened between
you and Mom had no baring on how you felt about me." Lucky sighed and put his
hands in his pockets "and that if you two could put it behind you and move on
and build a life together, then who am I to judge?"

Luke grinned and gave a loud yell. "Wowee! I always did like that Elizabeth
Webber. What you saw in that other Webber girl I'll never understand." Luke
moved around behind the bar "But that Elizabeth, she's fiery, she's bold,
she's gutsy," Luke paused thoughtfully and grinned at his smiling son. "Come
to think of it, she's a lot like a Spencer."

~~~present~~~
Things had continued on from there, Lucky had told Luke that he wasn't ready
to move back home, and Luke had agreed to let him stay in the apartment above
the club, and Luke wouldn't interfere with his job with Jason if he promised
to be careful. Lucky had returned to the club later, with his meager
belongings, to find that almost all of his stuff from home had been moved into
the apartment. Along with a note from his father, telling Lucky that he could
remain here as long as he liked, but that his mother and father would expect
him and Elizabeth for dinner on Sunday.
Lucky looked over at Liz and smiled, "She has given me everything. She has
given me a future, and she has given me back my past." As she turned to him
he brushed her cheek with the back of his fingers.
Liz smiled back at Lucky and placed her hand on the side of his face, "He has
given me everything, love and friendship, and a sense of self-worth that I
never thought I would feel again." Liz leaned her cheek into his fingers that
were still brushing against it.
For years afterwards they would laugh and tease about who had made the first
move, but in that moment, during the last strains of Music of the Night, it
didn't really matter. They met in the middle, lips touching gently and
clinging sweetly. And as the audience rose to it's feet in thunderous
applause, they broke apart and sat, lost in each other's eyes.
Floating, falling,
sweet intoxication!
Touch me, trust me
savour each sensation!
Let the dream begin,
let your darker side give in
to the power of the music that I write -
the power of the music of the night . . .
