Jarod [Michael T. Weiss]
In 1963, the
Centre isolated Jarod in order to harness his genius for research. An escaped
resident of the Centre, Jarod is a pretender, a genius who can master nearly
any skill. He uses that talent as a one-man force for justice. Taken from
his parents in 1963, Jarod spent decades (approximately 30 years) in isolation
at The Centre, a think tank that sold the his mental gifts to the highest
bidder. Classified as a "pretender" because of his ability to insinuate
himself into any walk of life, Jarod can literally become anyone. Now an
adult, Jarod has fled The Centre and goes about making wrongs right, while
playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with his former keepers. Jarod remains
at large.
Though eluding, even provoking, Miss Parker, Jarod maintains contact
with Sydney, a Centre psychiatrist in a effort to determine who his parents
were, and thus who he really is. Along with Miss Parker, Jarod has recently learned that Parker's mother, Cathrine Parker, was shot and killed by Jarod's father. The question is: Who is his father and where is he?
Sydney and Jacob [Patrick
Bauchau]
Sydney is a
psychiatrist in The Centre's Psychogenic Research Department, in charge
of programming extremely gifted children and running simulations utilizing
"pretenders." In that role, he often becomes an unintentional parent. Sydney
is fond of Jarod and wants him to reach his full potential, which causes
problems for The Centre when Jarod escapes. Sydney is protective of Jarod,
like a surrogate son. Though on some level he feels betrayed by Sydney,
Jarod still trusts him enough to turn to him for information about the
identity of his parents, and for reassurance when he is troubled.
Sydney temporarily lost his vision after he planted a bomb in Sl-27 that exploded with Jarod, Miss Parker, and himself still in Sl-27. He recently gained his vision back after a few weeks of blindness. He apparently cannot see as well as before the blast, because he now wears corrective lenses.
Sydney has a twin brother Jacob, who has been in a coma
since a car accident that occured while the brothers were arguing. Jacob
brought Jarod to the Centre, but he appears to have had second thoughts
about his involvement and had been threatened at gunpoint by Raines. While
in the coma, Raines sent a sweeper team to kill him, but Sydney and Miss
Parker were able to deceive him into thinking the deed had been done. Jacob died shortly later of a disease that had awakened him, but at the same time, killed him.
Miss Parker [Andrea Parker]
Out to spoil
Jarod's fun is The Centre's henchwoman, Miss Parker. Even though The Centre
wants Jarod back as a valuable investment, she has ordered him shot on
sight. Once an elite Centre operative in Corporate Operations, Jarod's
escape has brought Miss Parker back into "field investigations" in charge
of the hunt for Jarod.
Parker believed that when she was a child, her mother, Catherine,
committed suicide in an elevator --- though information Jarod discovered
has indicated otherwise. A birthday gift from Jarod took her to her mother's
weekend getaway (to visit a man Catherine loved, and who may be Miss Parker's
real father) in Maine, and to the realization that, like Jarod, she may
not really know as much about her parents as she'd like to. Jarod has continued
to feed her information about her mother. As a result, it is doubtful she'd
kill him as she's threatended, if she got the chance.
Miss Parker has a troubled relationship with her father (who may not
be her biological father), who also works for The Centre. She's shown her
soft side in conversations with him, yet his attentions aren't always reciprocal.
Much to her surprise and dismay, Miss Parker discovered that Mr.Lyle is her long lost twin brother. This fact may actually bring the two former rivals together.
Her work relationship with Sydney and Broots is icy, even condescending
as she reminds them of her superior position in The Center. She appears
to enjoy the power she commands.
Broots [Jon Gries]
A computer and electronics technician/researcher assigned to Miss Parker's
Jarod Project, Broots is well aware of the more sinister aspects of The
Centre, but lacks the courage to leave. Divorced and recently awarded custody
of his daughter Debbie, he has an online girlfriend who goes by the name
Delilah. Often picked on by Miss Parker, he gets his "revenge" with the
occasional prank.
Mr. Raines [Richard Marcus]
The mysterious Mr. Raines has a personal interest in Jarod, but we
don't know specifically what that is yet. While he wields some authority
at the Centre, he apparently isn't as powerful as Mr.Parker. Miss Parker recently discovered that Raines was involved in Catherine Parker's death. She now suspects that her Mr.Parker was involved with it as well.
In the past, when he was known as Dr. William (Billy) Raines, he arranged
to get Sydney out of the way in order to experiment on Jarod. Raines controlled
Jarod's brother Kyle while he was at the Centre, just as Sydney controlled
Jarod's.
Raines was seriously burned during a sweeper attempt to capture Jarod
when his ever-present oxygen tank was struck by a bullet. It has not officialy been determined who pulled the trigger, but Sydney confessed to his Brother, Jacob, that he'd been the one that tried to kill Raines. Both Miss Parker and Broots know as well, but they have decided to keep quiet about this, as they have a certain fondness for Sydney and an extreme hate for Raines.
Angelo [Paul Dillon]
Though not a pretender, Angelo exhibits a sponge-like power to absorb
personality data on others. Brought in on the Jarod Project by Mr. Raines,
Angelo is in reality operating on his own, even leaving The Centre at will.
He has recovered and hidden files from SL-27, and has helped Jarod and
Kyle both inside and outside The Centre --- even orchestrating their escape
when Kyle was recaptured. Angelo may know the identities of their parents
as well.
Mr. Parker [Harve Presnell]
A chairman on the Centre Council; Miss Parker's father (or not). Parker
holds some high-level authority at the Centre, but is mysterious enough
that one doesn't know what he's up to. He disappeared about the time Mr.
Raines was injured, but has since resurfaced to cause trouble for Mr. Lyle,
his replacement.
It was just revealed that Mr.Lyle is Mr.Parker's son. Although, there are suspicions that Mr.Parker already knew long before his daughter or anyone else at the Centre.
Kyle [Jeffrey Donovan]
Jarod's brother, perhaps brought to The Centre at the same time, Kyle posses pretender abilities equal to his brother. As
children, they had run a few simulations together, but were unaware of
their actual relationship. They communicated secretly, but when they were
caught, Kyle was moved to SL-27 where Mr. Raines trained him, turning him
into a sociopath pretender.
Kyle escaped from The Centre, and kidnapped a woman while searching
for his parents. Captured and sent to prison, Kyle escaped several years
later. As Jarod has searched for his parents, he identified Kyle and began
looking for him. When Kyle kidnapped the woman again, Jarod rescued her.
A sweeper team nabbed Kyle and he was scheduled for a lobotomy, no doubt
to conceal his knowledge of Raines and SL-27. Jarod helped Kyle escape
the Centre once again (with Angelo's help), but Kyle was wounded and presumed
burned to death in the attempt (The Dragon House). No body was been found,
however, and some evidence suggested that Kyle was still alive. It was
then discovered by Sydney, Broots, Miss Parker and Jarod that Kyle was
alive and well. Unfortunately, Kyle was shot and killed while protecting
Jarod from an attempt on Jarod's life by Mr.Lyle.
Kyle and Jarod also have a younger sister, Emily. Her location, as well as their mother and father's, location is unknown.
Mr. Lyle [Jamie Denton]
A high-level operative from the "Tower," the Centre's power elite,
who appeared on the scene after Mr. Parker disappeared. Mr. Raines referred
to him as "The Boogeyman." He seems to have less scruples than Raines and
his scheme to help a mobster kidnap a federal witness (using a past sim
of Jarod's) backfired with a little help from Jarod, and Mr. Parker and
Mr. Raines. Lyle was believed dead from a gunshot wound inflicted upon
him by Miss Parker. Contrary to that belief, Lyle had faked his death and
returned to try and kill Miss Parker, Sydney, Broots, Jarod and Kyle. His
plans were foiled by Jarod, Kyle and a local sherriff. He was then taken
captive by a Centre sweeper team. He recently resurfaced with the help of his father and is now a lower level operative whom is working in conjunction with Miss Parker, Sydney, and Broots to track down and capture Jarod.
Brigitte [Pamela Gidley]
A "cleaner" bought in to aid in the search for Jarod, Brigitte reports
to Mr. Lyle. She's not unlike Miss Parker in her manner, but the two haven't
hit it off. While Brigitte often seems one step ahead in the pursuit, she
underestimates Jarod's skills as a pretender. She also seems to know Mr.
Raines well. Brigitte tried to assasinate Mr.Parker when he re-surfaced
from his hiding. In a final showdown between Brigitte and Miss Parker,
Brigitte was knocked unconcious and taken captive by a Centre sweeper team.
She has not been heard from again.
