Into the Future

The year was 3094... That had been our latest assignment in history class. What a bummer. We had had to write a short piece on what we thought it would be like in that year. I always had some thoughts as to how it would be in the future but not quite that far into it. Here I was at the front of the class, ready, but nervous, about to start reading from my paper.

*****

"Hello fellow students and Mrs. Payne. I have chosen to present my paper as though I was the one living in that time, also as a student."

Karin sighed as she looked at the screen in front of her. Reading through the words that appeared in front of her, she thought that people really had it easy in the "old" days. Back when they lived on earth instead of on planets and in the ocean.

She herself lived in a oceanic colony in what was called the Pacific Ocean. It was all right, cause she really didn't know any other way, but researching her family tree had been an eye opening experience. Her ancestors from long ago lived on the continent of North America in a country called Canada. Now that country did not exist, nor did any others for that fact. There had been so many natural disasters back in the mid 21st century that little by little all the land that had been above the water had slowly disappeared until there wasn't but the peaks of the great mountains left above it.

Then they lived in houses. Now we live in pods. They traveled by car and other motorized vehicles and now we transport ourselves through space. I guess it isn't all bad. Our computers are light years beyond what they had back then, if you could even call them computers. She chuckled to herself as she remembered pictures she had seen of the computers from that time. How archaic they looked.

Continuing on with her assignment she listed what her schedule was on her chart and compared it to her ancestors. It wasn't all that much different. She got up at the same time as them, had her first meal, which they called breakfast, went to her room and signed on to her studies. She could see the rest of her classmates around the peripheral of the screen. Now back in her ancestors’ time they actually all met in one room for their learning, but this was almost the same. Then it was time for the mid meal and then back to learning again. There was a free time scheduled before the end meal, which back then was called supper. Then more free time and then back into the shell for some downtime. Only to get up a while later and start the routine all over again. Not much different than before, except they had daylight and nighttime. We have downtime instead.

Finally Karin finished her assignment just as the end meal bell rang, so she signed off and went to her designated area to meet with the rest of her family.

The end!!!!!!
