It's late morning. Paul Harper has come to see Ingrid Grimes to hopefully get some answers about his past. But what Paul doesn't know is his natural father, Kane Garrett, is only a staircase away.

Ingrid: I really don't understand Paul. What questions ?
Paul: About my childhood, and my mother. May I sit down?
Ingrid: Of course. (Paul takes a seat in an easy chair. Ingrid sits on the sofa). What would you like to know dear?
Paul: I want to know if I was adopted, and if I was, if you know who my real parents are.
Cut to Ingrid looking very startled).

We're at the Harper mansion. Joanna is now dressed and sitting in the sunroom, worrying about Paul when Quentin enters.

Quentin: So this is where you are. You have too many rooms in this house.
Joanna: Go away. I want to be left alone Quentin.
Quentin: I only wanted to ask you if you were planning to crash the party at the Grimes mansion with me.
Joanna: Surely you can't be serious. I'm not going anyway near that party.
Quentin: You mean you don't want to see your plan succeed when I have Tessie in my grasp and out of this town and Paul becomes so heartbroken the only person he can turn to is you?
Joanna: I have other things on my mind right now.
Quentin: I see. You mean the possibility of Ingrid spilling the the beans to Paul about his father.
Joanna: You should consider working for Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends. You're such a mindreader?
Quentin: Don't get sarcastic with me Joanna. Lora was the same way---and look where she ended up!
Joanna: Stop your threats. I've got to go to Ingrid and warn her not to tell Paul who his father is before the party, or everything I've worked so hard for will be lost!

This is our first view inside the Breckenridge police station. It's a mixture of modern times and old fashioned quaintness. Russell Gault is at his desk on the phone with the Bel Air police chief.

Russell: Thanks for taking the time to speak with me Chief Hernandez. A woman's life depends on it.
Hernandez: You have every night to be concerned. Lora Del Rio also received obscene phone calls before she disappeared. We're pretty sure she's dead.
Russell: Any info on her stalker?
Hernandez: Yes. Lora came to us two weeks before she disappeared and and gave us a description. The stalker hung around her apartment and followed her to and from work. I can fax you a sketch in a few minutes Russell.
Russell: Thanks. You have no idea how much I appreciate this Mario. And Tess Sherwood would appreciate it too. And also Lora's mother. She deserves justice for her daughter.

Back to the Grimes living room with Paul and Ingrid.

Ingrid: There's not much I can tell you Paul. Your parents had you four years after Stephen was born. As you know, your mother almost died giving birth to Stephen, and she didn't want to take a risk with you.
Paul: A risk? You mean another pregnancy. So I was adopted.
Ingrid: Paul I think it would be best if---
Paul: I need to know Ingrid. I need to know if maybe my being adopted has something to do with the frosty relationship I have with Joanna. And those flashbacks.
Ingrid: I'm sorry Paul. I can't tell you. I just can't.
Paul (getting up): Alright. I guess I have to get answers straight from the horse's mouth. But remember, I will learn the truth. Even if I have to hire a private investigator. I don't want to do that Ingrid. So I'm giving you another chance.
Ingrid: I can't Paul. I'm sorry.
Paul: Well goodbye then. I'll see you at the party tomorrow then. (He walks out of the living room and out the hall to the door).
Ingrid goes to the windows to watch him. She tries to fight back tears realizing she lied to her own nephew. Kane, who caught the last part of their conversation while keeping out of sight on the stairs, walks down toward her sister.
Kane: Ingy are you okay?
Ingrid (runs into his arms): Not really. I lied to Paul. My own nephew. I feel like garbage.
Kane: Don't ever think like that. (Sighs) My son was right here. You don't know how much I wanted to reveal myself. But it'll have to wait until tomorrow night.
Ingrid: I love him so much Kane!
Kane: So do I Ingy. So do I.

Rosamond Tucker and her niece Jadyn Burnham are having brunch in the Sherwood Diner. Tess comes over to the booth to say hello.

Tess: Hi Rosie. And this must be Jadyn. (Smiles at the little girl) What a pretty name you have!
Jadyn: I was named after Mommy's favorite jewerly.
Rosamond (laughing): She's right. My sister Cordelia loves jade. So how are things Tess?
Tess: Not good.
Jadyn: I have to go to the bathroom.
Tess: Jadyn, why don't you let my mom take you. She's the lady over there (points in Loretta's direction) I want to talk to your aunt.
Jadyn: Okay. (She hops out of the booth and runs to Loretta. Tess sits in her place)
Rosamond: Is everything okay between you and Paul?
Tess: Paul and I are great. But I've gotten some phone obscene calls and we think Joanna is behind it.
Rosamond: Joanna?
Tess: Yes. The caller hinted she was involved during the last phone call. Russell is checking out the identity of the caller, who might have been a former patient at Wakefield.
Rosamond: Wow, that's something else. I hope this doesn't interfere with your party tomorrow night.
Tess: Not a chance. Paul and my family will be there.
Rosamond: I've got the costumes in my trunk. They're gorgeous.
Tess: Paul and I will be over tomorrow to get ready. I'm looking forward to it.
Quentin Michaels walks in the diner and spots Tess. He goes over to her.
Quentin: Good morning Tess. You look lovely.
Tess: Hello---uh---um...
Quentin: Nigel. Remember, a few days ago? I was in here eating tea and toast.
Tess: That's right. I'm sorry. How could I forget? You left me a nice tip. How are you Nigel?
Quentin: Things couldn't be better (To himself) And after tomorrow, they'll be very wonderful.

Joanna is in her living room, looking at an album filled with family pictures. She stares at a picture of Paul as a baby, and begins to cry. This is the first sign of regretfullness we've seen from her. Then the doorbell rings. Joanna composes herself and answers it.

Joanna: Paul! My handsome son! Please come in. I'm so glad you're here. (Paul comes in with a stern look on his face) Come and give your mother a hug. (Opens her arms)
Paul (avoiding her arms): This isn't a social call. I'm here because I want you tell me the truth.
Joanna: The truth about what?
Paul: I know you're behind Tess' phone calls. You've gotten someone to scare her so she'll break up with me.
Joanna: Paul, I---
Paul: There's more. I also want to know if I was adopted, and who my real parents are. And I'm not leaving until you tell me what know.
