We are at Tess' house. She has just got a frightening phone call.
Voice: DIE! DIE! DIE! (evil laughter)
Tess hangs up the phone. Shaken, she dials Paul's apartment.
Paul: Hello, Paul Harper speaking.
Tess: Paul it's me.
Paul: Tess, honey you sound scared! What's wrong?
Tess: Oh Paul! I just got the most sickening phone call! Some evil voice telling me to die!
Paul: What???
Tess: Can you please come over? I'm frightened.
Paul: I'm on my way. Call the police before I come. I love you.
Tess: Please hurry.
Cut to a scene of a room in the Harper mansion. Quentin Michaels is looking out a window at the full moon, a demonic grin on his face. Joanna enters.
Joanna: Well?
Quentin: It's done. Tessie sounded so scared. It was beautiful.
Joanna: Very good. I'll be so happy once that tramp is out of Paul's life forever.
Quentin: Then I can have Tessie. Can't I Joanna?
Joanna: No. She may be a golddigger, but even she doesn't deserve a psycho like you.
Quentin: You promised me she was mine after this was all over. You promised!
Joanna: I didn't promise you anything. I just want you to scare Tess away from Paul. That's it Quentin.
Quentin: I told you I will make sure Tessie leaves him. But after that, she's mine. You can't run my love life!
Joanna: Love life? (laughs) What love life? You try to make a woman love you. Then when they don't want anything to do with you, you try to hurt them. That's not love Quentin.
Quentin: You sound just like that stupid doctor at the hospital. Always telling me what you think is wrong with me. Well I've got news for you Joanna. Nobody is going to tell me what to do anymore when it comes to my Tessie. I will have her. Hell will freeze over before you stop me. I'll scare her alright. I'll scare her away from that rich momma's boy and into my arms. So don't try and stop me Joanna. I promise you you'll regret it! (He storms out of the room)
Joanna (to herself): Quentin's a loose cannon, but it's worth it. Having Tess Sherwood out of Paul's life is all worth it.
Back to Tess' house. A police car and Paul's car are in the driveway.
Paul: Thanks for coming down Russ.
Russell: I just don't understand who would do this to you Tess.
Tess: He knew my name. He called me Tessie.
Paul: I'm sure my mother is behind this.
Tess: Paul, why do you say that?
Paul: Because she hates you. And you know what she did to my brother's fiancee.
Russell: That's a pretty serious accusation.
Paul. I know, but she is a cold and calculating woman. Especially when it comes to people she hates. I'm afraid she's gotten someone to make those awful calls to you Tess.
Tess: But who?
Paul: That's what we have to find out. Russ, can you tap Tess' phone to trace it if she gets another call?
Russell: Sure. I'll get some of my men over tomorrow morning to set it up.
Paul: Thanks Russ. Tess, I'm going to stay here tonight.
Tess: That's okay sweetie, but I called Mom and Dorothy before you came. They're staying with me.
Paul: Good. I'll see you tomorrow morning. I love you. (Kisses Tess)
Tess: I love you too. Goodnight.
Russell: Goodnight guys. See you tomorrow.
As Paul and Russell open the door to leave, they meet Loretta and Dorothy. Both women hug Paul.
Dorothy: Oh Paul, it's so terrible! Who would do this to my sister?
Russell: That's what we're going to find out. Goodnight ladies.
Loretta & Dorothy: Goodnight Russell.
Paul: I'm sure my mother is behind it.
Loretta: Joanna? But why? I know she's being a snob, but would she really go so far as to scare Tess away from you?
Paul: Yes. I think she would. You know what happened to Stephen when she broke up his relationship. She's not happy unless her family maintains its blueblood image. After Father died, she came unglued. She tried to keep Stephen and I with her. And she gets threatened when her family wants to be independent.
Dorothy: But making weird phone calls to Tess--
(Tess appears)
Tess: Mom! Dorothy! (They all hug and go inside the house, with Paul following).
Dorothy: We were talking about what happened to you tonight. Paul thinks Joanna's behind all this.
Paul: I don't think she's making the calls herself, but she's hired someone to do it.
Loretta: Who would agree to scare my daughter like this? It doesn't make sense!
Paul: It's got to be a psychopath. Someone who enjoys terrifying people. Someone---someone who befriended my mother while she was institutionalized at Wakefield.
Tess: A mental patient! Paul, that's awful!
Paul: I think we need to pay a visit to Wakefield as soon as possible. To see who my mother knew while she was there.
Dorothy: How soon is as soon as possible?
Paul: Tomorrow.
Cut to scene on the waterfront. Quentin is standing on a pier, holding a newspaper. He's staring at a picture of Paul and Tess, whose engagement was wrote up in the paper.
Quentin: Soon, Tessie, you'll be rid of Paul. Then we'll be together. Forever.
