It's now afternoon, and everyone is still at Alexandria Memorial Hospital. Paul Harper is back visiting with his father Kane Garrett. Paul has just informed Kane of Joanna Harper's escape and car accident.

Kane: The woman is very sick. She has been for a long time. (Pause) Paul, Zachary told me something about Joanna the day I came to visit you. I didn't think of it until now.

Paul: Zachary told you why Joanna is psychotic?

Kane: Joanna's mother Audra was mentally ill. She ended up committing suicide when Joanna was fifteen. Audra had been in and out of hospitals during Joanna's childhood.

Paul: She told me her mother had died of a disease, but I didn't know it was a mental one. So Joanna inherited her mother's illness?

Kane: Not only that, when Joanna was 20, her father arranged the marriage to Zachary Harper. He didn't want to marry her, but his parents made him. The marriage was doomed from the beginning.

Paul: But they were married for over 30 years Dad.

Kane: Once Zachary saw how fragile Joanna was, he couldn't bear to leave her. It would have driven her over the edge. He decided to make the union work. Joanna wanted children more then anything. So when she got pregnant with Stephen, Zachary thought Joanna would get better. But the pregnancy was rough, and Joanna wasn't able to conceive again after he was born. Then they adopted you, and her condition improved.

Paul: Until Stephen fell in love with Joy Calloway. Joanna didn't want him to leave her to marry Joy. Then Zachary started going out of town a lot. I just started college----He was having an affair wasn't he?

Kane: I didn't talk to Zachary after that day, but Ingy told me in her letters. While she was still close with Joanna, she told her. It was a woman he met while visiting his sick mother, a neighbor. Zachary wanted a divorce. Joanna refused. So he left to be with his mistress.

Paul: Then he died in the plane crash. And a few months later, Stevie committed suicide. It was too much for her, and she really cracked, and the family lawyers had her committed to Wakefield. Several years later, I met Tess....and it snowballed from there.

Kane: After she's released from here, she needs to be put away for good.

Paul: I agree. I'm going to ask Russell if she can be sent to another hospital instead of jail. I hope I can get some leeway.

Kane: And Quentin Michaels?

Paul: Another loose cannon, but I feel he needs to be hospitalized too. But not with Joanna.

Meanwhile, Joanna awakens in the psych ward of the hospital. She has been restrained again. She is shocked to find Quentin Michaels lying next to her in another bed.

Joanna: Quentin???

Quentin: We meet again my dear. Looks familiar, doesn't it?

Joanna: Are we at Wakefield?

Quentin: No. Some lovely little place in Alexandria, Virginia. Paul and Tessie are here. So is Paul's daddy. I almost got him, but he survived.

Joanna: I want to see Paul.

Quentin: He probably doesn't want to see you. But Tessie talked with me. I told her I was sorry.

Joanna: I'm sorry too. I want to tell Paul that.

Quentin: We're both sorry nuts. Everybody hates us. Think we'll go back to Wakefield?

Joanna: We're going to jail. We both tried to kill people.

Quentin: You tried to kill somebody? I never knew you had it in you.

Joanna: I hope that officer is alright. But they have to understand----I did it out of love! All I wanted was my family----what's wrong with that?

Quentin: Nothing. That's what they don't understand Joanna. They don't understand anything!

Dorothy Sherwood is eating lunch in the cafeteria when Russell Gault approaches her.

Russell: Mind if I sit with you?

Dorothy: I'd love the company. (He sits)

Russell: Well....I do have an ulterior motive for joining you.

Dorothy: Oh really?

Russell: I know this is probably the worst time to ask you, after all that's happened but----

Dorothy: Russ, you can tell me.

Russell: Dorothy, would you like to go to dinner with me? After we get back to Breckenridge?

Dorothy: For real?

Russell: Yes.

Dorothy: That would be lovely. (Russell breathes a sigh of relief and smiles back at Dorothy).

Back in Breckenridge, a car pulls up in front of the Grimes mansion. An attractive, middle-aged woman with short brown hair and blue eyes wearing a navy skirt and short- sleeved pink blouse gets out. She slowly and hesitantly makes her way to the door, and pushes the bell. A few moments later, Cordelia Burnham answers the door.

Cordelia: Hello, can I help you?

Woman: I'm----I'm looking for Ingrid Grimes. Does she----does she still live here?

Cordelia: Yes she does. I'm Cordelia Burnham. Her maid is my sister. Ingrid and the rest of the family are in Alexandria. Her brother's been admitted to a hospital down there.

Woman: Kane!

Cordelia: You know him ma'am?

Woman: I----I have to go. I'm sorry to take up your time. (She runs away, ignoring Cordelia's yells, gets into her car, and drives off).

Woman: Kane, my God, you are here! That could only mean one thing----you've found him. You've found our baby!
