Back on the waterfront, same night. Paul is there standing on the same pier that Quentin was on last time.
Paul (to himself): Who could be helping my mother scare Tess? Who?
(Larry Sherwood comes up and approaches Paul)
Larry: Paul!
Paul: Hey Larry! Nice to see you!
Larry: How's Tess? Mom and Dorothy told me what happened. I was at still at the diner and didn't get a chance to visit her. Sick, man.
Paul: She's shaken but otherwise okay. I couldn't sleep, so I decided to come down here and think things out.
Larry: Same with me. I just can't believe there's some weirdo out there who wants to harm my sister.
Paul: I told your mother and your sisters, and now I'm going to tell you I'm positive my mother got someone to make that call.
Larry: Your mother? Are you serious? I mean I know she doesn't like Tess but do you really think we would get some creep to harrass her?
Paul: Loretta said the same thing back at Tess' house, but I'm convinced it's her. Actually, I'm glad you're here because I want you to go with me to Wakefield tomorrow. I believe my mother got someone who used to be a patient with her to call Tess. So, would you like to come?
Larry: Sure Paul. Anything to help catch the sicko.
Paul: Okay. Then we better go home and get a goodnight's sleep. Did you walk down?
Larry: Yeah.
Paul: Come on. I'll give you a ride home.
Larry: Thanks Paul. (The two head to Paul's car)
(The whole time, Quentin has been hiding around the corner listening. He steps out after they leave).
Quentin (to himself): I have to make sure those two never make it to Wakefield. If they find out it's me, I'll have to go back---and I won't let that happen. Then I won't have Tessie. (laughing) Those two are going to have the ride of their life!

It's now morning. The sun is up and the sky a bright, cloudless blue. We're at the Grimes mansion and Rosamond is in the kitchen, sitting and having a cup of coffee. Lance enters.
Rosamond: Good morning Mr. Grimes.
Lance (laughing): It's Lance Rosie. There's more than one Mr. Grimes here. How are you today?
Rosamond: Just fine. I slept wonderfully.
Lance: Good. Is Mother up yet?
Rosamond: I think she's in the shower. I heard the water running in her bedroom. Your father left for work and your brother is in the pool. Would you like some coffee?
Lance: I'll get it Rosie thanks. You just sit there and enjoy your cup.
Rosamond: Thanks Mr. Gr---sorry. Thanks Lance. (Phone rings)
Rosamond: I'll get it. Grimes residence. Oh hello Ms. Braxton. Yes, he's right here. Lance, Ms. Braxton wants to speak to you.
Lance: Thanks Rosie. Hi Eliza.
Rosamond (mouthing): I'll give you some privacy. (She leaves)
Eliza: Hi honey. Want to go to Elaine's for breakfast?
Lance: Sorry, I'm heading for the office. But how about I meet you there for lunch?
Eliza: Sounds great! 12:30 okay?
Lance: Fine. See you then.
Eliza: Okay. Bye. Love you.
Lance (without emotion): Love you too. Bye.
(Rosamond comes back into the kitchen and begins cleaning up the coffee cups).
Rosamond: Everything okay?
Lance: Couldn't be better. Well, I'm off to work. I won't be home for lunch, I'm eating with Eliza.
Rosamond: Alright. Have a nice day then.
Lance: You too Rosie. (He hugs her, which catches Rosamond off guard. He quickly leaves).
Lance (under his breath): I love you Rosie.
We're inside the Sherwood Diner. The breakfast rush is over, and Tess and Loretta are behind the counter.
Loretta: Are you sure you're going to be okay honey?
Tess: Yes Mom. Working will take my mind off the call.
Loretta: If you say so.
Tess: Besides, Paul and Larry are going to Wakefield to see if Paul's hunch is right about a former patient. I hope they find something out.
Loretta: What bothers me is that Paul thinks his own mother is the one behind this. You know Tess, I feel so sorry for him. He's such a warmhearted man...nothing like Joanna. He doesn't deserve a mother like her, trying to run his life. And now this. He must feel so guilty.
Tess: He is terrific Mom isn't he? And I promise you Joanna won't spoil our happiness. Paul will se to it.
Loretta: Right now, my concern is you and Paul. If anything happened to you, I don't know what I'd do! (Puts her head in her hands and sobs)
Tess (Putting an arm around her mom): Mom, please don't cry. Everything will be okay. Paul and Larry will discover something.
Loretta (Wiping away her tears): A mother has to cry for her kids sometimes you know.
Tess (Hugging her mom): You're the best. Hey---look. I've never seen that guy before.
Loretta (Looking in Tess' direction at the door): Me neither. He must be new in town. What a handsome young man. Look at those blue eyes!
We see the man coming into the diner is Quentin Michaels....
