It's midnight, and Rosamond Tucker is lying next to Lance Grimes, facing away from him. She is trying to go to sleep, but can only think about what just happened a few minutes ago. She and Lance had finished making love, the very thing she tried to avoid. But she doesn't regret one minute of it. As she closes her eyes again, she feels Lance's arms wrap around her waist, and his lips on her neck.
Lance (breathlessly): Rosie. (She turns around to face him) How are you baby?
Rosamond: Absolutely fine. (Lance kisses her, and she puts his head on her chest).
Lance: I still can't believe it. I never dreamed you would come to me like this.
Rosamond: I had to. Something told me to come to your room. After I left you in the den and I went to my room, I couldn't sleep. I just laid there, and an overwhelming sense of loneliness fell on me. I needed you Lance.
Lance: I'm so glad you did. I've been imagining about a night like this for weeks. I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you! (He rolls around and gets on top of her, smothering her with kisses. Rosamond laughs and kisses him back).
Rosamond: You are a teriffic man Lance Grimes. Now give me another kiss, hold me tighter, and let's try to get some sleep.
Lance: I'll only be dreaming of you.
Rosamond: That goes for me too. (Lance kisses her one last time, pulls her closer, and off they drift to dreamland).
Meanwhile, Valerie, Talbot, and Ingrid and Marcus Grimes are in the living room talking.
Valerie: I have to tell you Ingrid and Marcus, my husband is not happy about my finding Paul. In fact, he's downright hostile.
Ingrid: But surely he doesn't have any reason to believe Paul is going to be a threat to your marriage?
Valerie: He thinks I 'm going to leave him for Paul and Kane, which is ridiculous. I couldn't---not with my two daughters being the age they are. Well, actually, I did threaten I would leave and take the girls, but only if he tried to interfere in my seeing Paul.
Marcus: Has he always been like this Valerie?
Valerie: Yes, but I chalked it up to him just being a protective husband. Now, it scares me. He tried to physically stop me from leaving our hotel room.
Ingrid: He sounds just like Joanna Harper.
Valerie: The woman who adopted Paul. Kane didn't like her from the beginning.
Marcus: His instincts were right on. She turned out to be extremely sick mentally.
Valerie: I love Drennen. But the past several years have not been easy. See, his parents were married for 48 years before his dad passed away. He believes in until death do us part. And I---well, you know how my parents were. Anyway, Drennen is a good father, a great provider, but his temper is terrible. If I didn't have this desire to see Paul, I wouldn't know what to do with myself. When Zoe and Amaya were little, my focus was them. Now they're out of school. They don't need a lot of mothering anymore.
Ingrid: Why don't you stay with us Valerie. Maybe some time away will help you sort out yout feelings.
Marcus: We have plenty of room. You'll be able to meet Paul and see Kane again.
Valerie: I can't. Drennen would get even more angrier. But thank you. (Looks at the grandfather clock) Wow, it's quarter after twelve. I should get going. I'm suprised Drennen hasn't come looking for me. He knows I'm here. (Stands up) Ingrid, Marcus, thank you for welcoming me back, for talking with me. I can't tell you how grateful I am. (She goes to them and hugs them).
Marcus: Don't be a stranger.
Valerie: I won't. Goodnight. I'll see myself out. (She walks out of the living room).
Ingrid: I feel so sorry for her honey.
Marcus (squeezing his wife's shoulders): Me too. I just hope that husband of hers doesn't do anything drastic....
Drennen Talbot is sitting on the sofa in his hotel suite, drinking brandy and thinking about Valerie's ultimatum. He's suprised at her sudden anger, realizing how easy-going she always was until now. Even when he hollered and screamed at her, she didn't let it bother her. He puts the brandy on the coffee table, gets up, and goes to the balcony. He looks out at the clear, star-filled sky and begins thinking out loud.
Drennen: This obession with Paul is turning Valerie into another woman. She isn't my sweet wife anymore. I have to stop Valerie from seeing Paul. I can't let him tear our family apart----that's it! I'll find Paul first, tell him who I am, say some bad things about his dear mommy and daddy to make him angry. He'll assault me----then I'll have him thrown in jail. Valerie will never want anything to do with her precious Paul ever again.....
