It's late afternoon. Paul Harper and Tess Sherwood have asked their friends and family to come to the Grimes mansion for a special announcement. Everyone is in the living room.
Paul: I know you all have other things you want to do, so Tess and I are going to make a quick announcement. (To Tess) Honey, you want to do the honors?
Roark: You guys aren't gonna call off the wedding again are you? I've been craving some cake for months! (Everyone laughs).
Tess: No Roark, you're going to get that slice of cake. The wedding is on, and we all want you to make yourselves free for next Friday at five o'clock sharp.
Lance: You're finally going to take the plunge next week? That's great!
Dorothy: Have you guys contacted City Hall yet?
Tess: We're not getting married at City Hall.
Roark: So it's at Saint Bartholemew's?
Tess: No, not there either. (Looks at Cordelia and Everett Burnham).
Dorothy: So where is it going to be Tess?
Tess: Cordelia and Everett have been very kind to let us hold the ceremony at their lovely home.
Rosamond: Cordy! Why didn't you tell me?
Cordelia: Tess and Paul wanted it to be a suprise.
Ingrid: And it's a wonderful suprise too. We'll all be there dear.
Tess: Thanks Ingrid. The reception is still going to be here if that's okay.
Marcus: We wouldn't have it anywhere else.
Dorothy: What a fabulous idea Tess. Listen, I have to go. I'm meeting Russell at Elaine's. Bye everybody. (Everyone says goodbye, and she leaves).
(Kane Garrett gets up of the sofa and starts heading toward the door).
Paul: Dad, where are you going?
Kane: There's something I have to do Paul. I'll be back later.
Paul: Dad----
Kane: I won't be long son. (He pats him on the shoulder and leaves).
Paul: Now I wonder what that's all about.
Russell Gault is sitting in a table by the corner at Elaine's waiting for Dorothy. He has just ordered and iced tea. After the waitress brings it, Dorothy enters. She spots Russell, smiles, and heads over.
Dorothy: Hi Russell. (She kisses him on the cheek, then sits down). I was at Marcus and Ingrid's. Tess and Paul have decided not to get married at City Hall.
Russell: So where are they doing the deed?
Dorothy: Cordelia and Everett Burnham's house.
Russell: Why did they decide that?
Dorothy: They didn't say, but the house Cordelia and Everett live in is the old Camden house. It's a beautiful place, and the Camdens are legendary for their lavish parties. Maybe Cordelia and Everett want to keep up the tradition.
Russell: Well, it sounds better than a common courthouse wedding. After what those two have been through, they deserve a nice ceremony. (The waitress comes over to take their order).
Dorothy: I'll have the grilled chicken club and an iced tea.
Russell: Make that two. (The waitress writes down their choices, then leaves. Russell puts his hand over Dorothy's). I'm beginning to really enjoy spending time with you Dorothy. I hope you feel the same way.
Dorothy: I do. I really do Russell. (Just then, Wade Atherton walks through the door. He spots Russell and walks over).
Wade: Russell!
Russell: Wade! What are you doing here?
Wade: I just got off work, and decided to come here for a bite to eat. Sheila told me how great this place was----and who's this pretty lady with you?
Russell: This is Dorothy Sherwood, Tess' sister. Dorothy, this is Wade Atherton, one of the best cops I know.
Dorothy: Hello Wade. (Shaking his hand) Wait----you were the man who Joanna Harper hurt when she escaped. How are you doing?
Wade: Great, especially now that she's committed to a mental ward. So Dorothy, is Tess as pretty as you?
Dorothy: Even prettier.
Wade: Well, I won't keep you guys any longer. See you later. (He heads to another table).
Dorothy: What a charmer. Present company excluded.
Russell: That he is.
(Wade tries, but can't stop looking at Dorothy. What a pretty woman, he thinks to himself. Russell is so lucky to be having lunch with her. Maybe their relationship isn't that serious, and I could ask her out. I wonder if she'll say yes.....
Meanwhile, Kane is walking down the hallway of the top floor at the Plumtree Inn, heading for the Talbots' hotel room. I wouldn't have found it if I didn't ask for the credit card receipt back at Elaine's and traced his number, he thinks to himself. He finally reaches the door to the room, and knocks. Drennen Talbot opens it.
Drennen: Can I help you?
Kane: Are you Drennen Talbot?
Drennen: Yes. Who are you?
Kane: May I come in please?
Drennen: Who are you?
Kane: My name is Kane Garrett.
Drennen: Kane....Kane???
Kane: So you do know me. I would like to come in.
Drennen: Sure. (He steps aside and Kane enters the room). So, how did you find me? Did Val----
Kane: I'm going to make this brief Mr. Talbot. Stay away from my son.
Drennen (playing dumb): I don't understand.
Kane: You were at Elaine's this morning. I overheard you planning something against Paul Harper. My son. And I tracked you down to tell you to leave him alone. He's getting married next week and he doesn't need any more grief from another irrational, jealous person. So quit your scheming.
Drennen: So you're playing big, bad Daddy huh? Threatening me to stay away from your precious Paul? Well Mr. Garrett, threats don't scare me.
Kane: But losing your family does. It's a devastating blow I hope you'll never experience. So I'm warning you to drop this vendetta you have against my son. I've lost him once. I'm not losing him again, especially to some one like you.
Drennen: Get out. Get out right now.
Kane: Fine. But if you want your wife to hate you for the rest of your life----
Drennen: I said get the hell out! (As Kane turns to leave, the door opens. Valerie is in the doorway).
Valerie (instantly recognizing Kane): Oh dear Lord. No, it can't be! It just can't! Kane???
Kane: (also recognizing Valerie): Valerie???
