Same day as Episode 3. We are inside the Sherwood Diner, where Tess and Loretta have just spotted Quentin Michaels coming through the door.
Tess: Mom, we're staring. It's rude.
Loretta: I know but I can't help it. He's such a good-looking young man. And he's coming this way.
(Quentin sits on a stool across from Tess at the counter. He flashes her a big grin, then smiles at Loretta).
Quentin: Good morning lovely ladies. It's a beautiful day out there isn't it?
Tess: Yes it is. Can I get you anything?
Quentin (thinking to himself): Just you, beautiful Tessie.
(Out loud): Um, yes. A cup of tea and some toast please.
Loretta: You have a British accent. Have you been in the states long?
Quentin: A few years. (He watches Tess intensely as she fixes his order). You have a beautiful daughter.
Loretta: How did you know she was my daughter?
Quentin: You resemble each other. (Holds out his right hand) I'm Nigel Carmichael.
Loretta (shaking his hand): I'm Loretta Sherwood. My daughter's name is Tess. Nice to meet you. Tess, this is Nigel Carmichael.
Tess: Hi Nigel. (She holds out her right hand)
Quentin: Hello Tess. (He shakes her hand and doesn't want to let go of it but he does).
(Tess brings Quentin/Nigel his tea and toast. As he begins to eat, Paul and Larry walk in).
Tess: Hi honey! (She runs to him and kisses him).
Paul: Good morning sweetie. What a nice greeting. (Returns her kiss)
Larry: I'll guess I'll slink to a corner somewhere.
Tess: Larry I wouldn't forget you. I thought you and Paul were going to Wakefield.
(Quentin tries not to glare at Paul and Larry, but he's angry).
Larry: We are, we just came to get a thermos of coffee for the road.
Loretta: I'll get it dear. Be right back. (Goes into the kitchen)
Tess: I want you two to be careful. If Joanna finds out where you're going and what you're doing, you could be in serious danger.
Paul: We're aware of that. But you're the one who really needs to be careful.
Larry: He's right Tessie. Some nut is out there and this person's threatened your life. And if Joanna is pulling this nut's strings, no telling what he or she will do next.
(Quentin is seething. He tries with all his might not to turn around and glare at them).
Quentin (thinking to himself): Nobody is pulling my strings! I'm not some damned puppet! I do what I want!
Tess: I understand. But still be careful OK?
Paul: We will baby. (Hugs her)
(Loretta comes out of the kitchen with a thermos, a stack of styrofoam cups, and a bag of krullers).
Loretta (handing everything to Larry): Here you go. Take care and call when you get there OK?
Larry: Will do Mom. Bye. (Kisses her, then Tess)
Loretta: Be careful guys. Please.
Paul: We better go. I love you Tess.
Tess: Love you too.
Larry: Bye Tess. (Both men head out of the door)
(Loretta runs to the door and waves. She turns around and sighs. Quentin gets up from the counter).
Quentin: I have to go now. It was nice talking to you Tess, and the food was splendid. (He pulls out his wallet and hands Tess a five dollar bill)
For you, Tess.
Tess: No, please, I possibly couldn't---
Quentin: Take it. I want you to have it.
Tess: If you insist. Thank you Nigel. (She takes the money and puts it in her pocket).
Quentin: Goodbye. (He walks towards the door, says goodbye to Loretta, and leaves).
Tess: Look Mom, Nigel gave me a five dollar tip. I'm going to use it for his bill. Either way, I keep $3.35.
Loretta: That was very sweet of him to do that.
(Quentin is outside in his 2 door red Neon. He's sitting in a parking space outside the diner).
Quentin: I'm coming for you Paul and Larry. I'm going to make sure you never get to Wakefield. You can't know my connection to Joanna. And you can't ruin my chance with Tessie. You won't!
(He backs out of the space and drives off to catch up with Paul and Larry).
