It's five minutes before midnight and the partygoers at WBRE are getting ready to count down to 2001. Drennen is also getting ready---to aim his gun and end the lives of Paul and Kane, the men he feels are ruining his life.

Drennen: Five more minutes. Just five more minutes, and I can have my life back. (He slowly takes his gun out of his jacket).

At that same time, Russell gets a bad feeling, and the hairs on his neck stand up. Dorothy senses this.

Dorothy: What's wrong Russ?

Russell: It's my cop's instinct. Something's not right here.

Dorothy: What do you mean?

Russell: I have this feeling something very terrible is about to happen.

Dorothy: Here? At the TV station?

(Russell begins looking around the studio. His eyes moves upward towards the catwalk. He thinks he spies a shadow, then looks again. He begins walking closer, and Dorothy follows him).

Dorothy: Where are you going? What do you see?

(Drennen spots Russell looking in his direction. He avoids his gaze, and finds Paul and Kane standing with their dates and Marcus and Ingrid. The countdown begins. Almost everyone shouts 5.....4.....3.....2....1.....Drennen aims his gun at Paul and Kane. Before Happy New Year can be shouted, Russell screams).

Russell: Get down everybody! GET DOWN! (He draws his gun).

The crowd begins yelling and ducking. Drennen fires his gun. Screams are heard. Russell fires his. Drennen is hit in the arm, but he fires again, then runs. Russell starts after him....

WBRE reporters and camera crews begin broadcasting live about the shooting. Police sirens can be heard wailing. Russell is chasing Drennen through the boiler room and shouting at him to give up. Drennen turns around, but Russell is too quick. He shoots him again, this time hitting his shoulder. Drennen falls down.

Loretta, Zoe, and Amaya are racing to the station in Loretta's stationwagon. They saw the live broadcast at the diner, and are hurrying to check on their loved ones.

Zoe: Oh my God, oh my God, I hope it's not Mom!

Amaya: Or Paul or Kane!

Loretta: My children!

A TV crew films Russell, officers Wade Atherton, Shelia Tandy, and other cops leading an injured Drennen into a waiting ambulence. Suzanne Haines is holding a microphone. She points it at Drennen.

Suzanne: Can you tell us why you did it?

Drennen: I just wanted my family back, but nobody understood! (Begins crying. The cops lead him away from Suzanne and into the ambulence. Russell, Wade, and Sheila get in the back, and it speeds off).

Meanwhile, other paramedics and cops are checking for possible wounded or dead partygoers. They discover nobody else was hurt.

All the members of the Grimes family hold onto one another. Cordelia, Everett, and Rosamond hug each other. Larry, Deanna, Eliza, and Dorothy do the same. The cops let Loretta, Zoe, and Amaya inside to find their family.

Zoe: Mom!

Valerie: Zoe! Amaya! (She runs to her daughters and they grab each other and begin crying. Tess spots Loretta).

Tess: Mom!

Loretta: My baby! (They run to each other, almost falling down. Larry and Dorothy race over to them, kissing and hugging each other. Suzanne enters the studio).

Suzanne: Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please? (Everyone faces her). The sniper has been identified. (Loud gasps, sighs of relief, and murmurs). His name is----is----Drennen Talbot.

Valerie: No! Oh my God no! Drennen? But why?

Zoe: Dad?

Amaya: Jesus, this can't be true! Dad caused all this? (Several members of the Grimes family come over to them. Suzanne walks over to Eliza and hugs her).

Eliza: It's all my fault. I'm the reason he came here---and fired those shots. I caused this madness! (She crumples in Suzanne's arms, sobbing. Lance, Deanna, and Rosamond go to her and comfort her).

Suzanne: Russell Gault captured him. He's been shot in the shoulder, and is at the hospital. Russell is ordering a psychiatric evaluation.
