Kane began to tell Paul about his past, much to Ingrid's dismay.
And now, tonight's episode...
Ingrid is leaning against the wall, a look of pain on her face as she listens to her brother Kane begin to tell Paul their secret. She tries in vain to think of a way to prevent him from spilling the beans, but can only fight back tears at what she thinks is her baby brother's betrayal.
Kane: Your aunt and I were teenagers, and things were terrible at home---
Paul (interrupting): Aunt Ingrid said your parents hit the both of you.
Kane (nodding): She's right. I don't know if she also told you our father was in the military and it was either his way or no way at all.
Paul: She did. What about your mom?
Kane: Mother only hit us because Father told her to and if she didn't, he'd start beating her. But she wasn't that affectionate with us either. As a matter of fact, she would turn a blind eye to the abuse. I think she was happy knowing she was married, she had her two obligatory children, she had a roof over head, and to hell with was going under that roof. (Pause) It was just before school let out. Ingrid was a senior, and I was thirteen...
Ingrid is wringing her hands in despair as she continues to listen to Kane. She decides to go into the kitchen and stop him from saying anymore but before she does, the phone in the kitchen rings. She enters the kitchen and watches with relief as Kane excuses himself to get the phone. She sits down next to Paul and tries to act nonchalant.
Ingrid: So Paul, have you and Kane cleared the air?
Paul: We're just beginning. (Ingrid looks away)
Kane comes back with the phone and hands it to Paul.
Kane: It's that beautiful wife of yours. She wants you to come home.
Paul (getting up): I hope nothing is wrong. (He takes the receiver from Kane and puts it to his ear, walking over to the sink. Kane sits down next to his sister and gives her a knowing look).
Kane: Saved by the bell huh Sis?
Ingrid: What?
Kane: I know you were eavesdropping on me, and I know you're relieved that phone call was for my son. But I'm going to tell him everything after he finishes talking to Tess.
Ingrid: Why are you betraying me Kane?
Kane: The only person you're betraying is yourself, for not owning up to the past.
Paul hangs up the phone and walks over to the siblings with a glum expression on his face.
Paul: Tess wants me to come home and stay with her. Larry's at the hospital with Roark. Their friend Brody showed up at the diner all bloody.
Ingrid (horrified): Brody Pearce! Oh no! Did she say what happened?
Paul: Larry told her his father---the one that hit on Loretta at the park---stabbed him. (Ingrid gasps) Dorothy's at the diner with Loretta. The TV station filmed the inside for a report they're going to do tonight. Dad, I'm sorry I can't stay. I'll talk to you later.
Kane: Want me to walk you out?
Paul: No that's okay. Bye Aunt Ingrid. (He hurries out)
Kane turns to his sister and looks at her sternly.
Kane: I'm going to pick up right where I left off---tomorrow.
Janet MacDonald is sleeping on her couch inside her dressing room at WBRE. The anonymous caller had earlier that evening tormented her about her past in Breckenridge and it shook her up so terribly she had to take a Valium from station manager Sam Granger to calm her down.
Suzanne Haines quietly enters Janet's room and sees her sleeping so she turns around to leave. But Janet begins calling out in her sleep.
Janet: No not Julie. My name is Janet. I didn't abandon my baby. I love him. No no no no....
Suzanne rushes to Janet and gently shakes her out of her troubled sleep.
Suzanne: Janet! Wake up. You're having a nightmare. Janet!
Janet opens her eyes and looks at Suzanne, dazed and confused.
Janet: W-w-what's going on? Where am I?
Suzanne: You're in your dressing room at the station honey. You were having a bad dream.
Janet: I was? (Rubs her eyes and sits up) Oh wow, that Valium really did a number on me. (She looks at her watch) It's late. I slept for quite a while.
Suzanne: Sam told me what happened tonight. I'm so sorry.
Janet: The guy is a first class nutcase. He's probably some publicity freak just looking for his fifteen minutes of fame. (Although Janet knows that's not really the case)
Suzanne: If he's from this town, all bets are on that he's for real. Breckenridge's main crop is psychopaths. (Janet looks at her fearfully) It was only a joke, I apologize. Listen, the real reason I came here is that something happened at the diner tonight.
Janet: The Sherwood?
Suzanne: Yeah, how did you know?
Janet (covering): I've ridden by there a few times.
Suzanne: Well anyway, Jordan and I stopped there tonight on our way back to the station for a bite to eat, and I saw a young man slumped on the floor bleeding badly. I went to the hospital with his friends and one of them said his father stabbed him.
Janet: Oh my God that's awful. His own father.
Suzanne: We're doing a story on it tonight.
Janet: Is the young man all right?
Suzanne: He lost a lot of blood, but Larry Sherwood---another friend---had the same blood type, so he donated blood. He's in critical condition, but the doctors expect him to pull through.
Janet: Well that's good. Is he a local guy?
Suzanne: Yeah. He lives a few blocks down from the diner. His name is Brody Pearce.
At the mention of Brody's name, Janet's eyes well up with tears, and she begins to tremble. She collapses onto the couch. Suzanne becomes very curious at Janet's extremely emotional reaction.
Suzanne: Janet what's wrong? You don't know this guy do you?
Janet: Who, Brody? No! I mean, it's just that---oh God, this has been the night from hell! I have to get out of here! (She jumps off the couch in hysterics and runs out.
Suzanne: Janet, wait! (She follows her)
