An apartment in downtown Breckenridge, 8:30 p.m.
Male hands held a picture of Kane Garrett walking out of The Sherwood Diner on Main Street. The photograph was black and white, and was taken with a telescopic lens.
Alex Perrini stared at the photograph some more, then set it down on his small coffee table. He sat down on his sofa and put his hands in his chin, a pensive expression on his handsome face.
"I've been searching for you and Ingrid since I was nineteen years old," he said aloud to himself. "My parents---my adoptive parents---finally decided to come clean and they told me everything. That my birth mother was afraid of hurting me---like she did with you and our sister. And my father was very abusive." He sighed and stood up.
"Maybe they did the right thing, giving me up so I would have a better life. It was pretty good too. But I had to find you. I needed to know. I had an inkling I was adopted---my parents were both blonde and blue-eyed. They tried to say I took after my uncle, who was dark. But I really didn't buy it, and now I know why.
He laughed bitterly. "I guess they were only trying to protect me, but it would have been nice to know earlier I had a brother and a sister. He sat back on the sofa again. "Whether you like it or not, I'm going to come forward and reveal myself to you. It's not out of spite, and I don't want any money. I just want my brother and sister in my life."
Three hours later...
Another apartment, downtown Breckenridge
Suzanne Haines' killer stood sightless, facing a winow, their back to the small living room. The crescent moon shined brightly in the pitch black sky.
Come morning, this little town will have another body to cry over. The police will be so wracked with guilt. The news will jump on the murder like vultures on raw meat. And my revenge is slowly being fufilled, the demented predator thought. The killer moves to a dresser, where a Barbie doll dressed in a blue ballgown lie, a knife plunged into its tiny plastic chest.
An alley behind Main Street, same time
Amaya Talbot walked through the dark alley, jumpy and spooked. She wished she never agreed to work overtime at the hospital. Now she was taking a shortcut to the bus stop to catch the late night ride. She was glad that she had her pepper spray with her.
"I can't wait until I save enough money to buy a car," Amaya said ruefully. "I don't care if it's from the 80s," I just want some wheels, so I don't have to cross through creepy alleys ever again."
She continued walking, her pace becoming more brisk. She wasn't going to end up murdered by some psycho from a cheesy slasher film. She was going to catch the bus, go home, and hop into her comfortable bed, and thank the Lord her day off was tomorrow.
The end of the alley was up ahead. A large dumpster was on the left. Amaya hated walking by the dumpster because rats and mice would jump out at her while they were searching for scraps. Hopefully, the rodents decided to go somewhere else tonight to dine.
Something sticking out from behind the dumpster caught her eye. Amaya felt a chill run down her spine. Oh God, please don't let it be a huge rat, she thought to herself.
Walking very slowly, Amaya snuck up on the dumpster. When she reached it, she looked down and saw it was an arm. A woman's arm. She instantly became nauseous and although she wanted to run the other way, something told her to look some more.
Amaya moved closer and peeked over the top. Then she screamed. And screamed, and screamed, and screamed.
The bloody body of police officer Sheila Tandy lay sprawled on the ground, her blue eyes staring up at Amaya as if to accuse her of ending her life. Her throat had been slit wide open. Her blonde hair had been hacked off, and a Barbie doll dressed like a policewoman lay on her stomach, its hair also chopped off...
