The police station, same time
Russell is sitting by himself at his desk. Many of the cops are still at the crime scene. He gets up and walks over to the window by his desk. A WBRE news van is parked out front, where Evan Langley is standing in front of the building, doing his introduction piece to the story of Sheila's murder.
Oh Christ---Sheila, he thinks, why you? Why did you have to die? You didn't do anything to this monster! You had a future. You were a damn good cop.
Hurt and angry, he grabs his crystal paperweight from the desk and hurls it against the wall. It shatters into pieces and flies to the floor. He puts his head into his hands, fighting off a wave of nausea.
The phone on his desk rings. Russell picks the receiver up roughly. "Hello?" he barked.
"You're mad at me," the high pitched electronic voice of the murderer says at the other end of the line. "I've gone and killed a cop and now you want to play vigilante don't you?" it taunts.
"You goddamn piece of trash!" Russell hollers. "You've made it personal now. Don't think I won't find you!"
The voice laughs demonically. "It's not going to stop Lieutenant Gault. "I deserve to have my revenge!"
"Revenge?" Russell retorts. "Revenge for what?"
"Why don't you ask that bitch Janet MacDonald? Or should I say Julianna Pearce?" the voice spat. "It's her fault your little police girl had to die." The voice cackles. "You know, she put up quite a fight. The Breckenridge boys in blue trained her well. But I was no match for her. I was no match for any of them!" The voice laughs again.
"You realize I can have this call traced you scum," Russell shot back.
"I'm not stupid Gault," the voice replies defensively. "I'm calling from a place that can't be found out. So don't even try it." More cackling. "Wanna take a guess on who the next unlucky victim will be?"
"Go to hell!" Russell shouted with disgust. He slammed down the phone furiously. "It will stop," he vowed aloud. "You will be caught---and you will fry."
The park, almost two a.m.
Zoe is back at the park after sneaking out of her house. She needed time alone to think and to sort out her feelings. Although she apologized to Kane profusely about her accusing him of murder and he assured her he wasn't angry, a part of her still doubted him. It couldn't have been a coincidence he bought the same doll that was the one that ended up on the body.
She begins walking down to the pond again, but stops when she sees a dark figure standing at the edge. She starts to shudder and begins backing up, the nights' events rattling her nerves.
The figure spots Zoe and begins running after her. Zoe sees the person is chasing her, and begins running too. Her heart pounding, she rushes toward the entrance of the park, but she trips and falls, landing on her stomach. She begins crying and gasping as she struggles to stand. The figure stops and stands over her.
"I'm sorry if I scared you. I thought you were someone else. Let me help you." The figure gently helps Zoe to her feet. She looks at her rescuer and her mouth drops open at the sight of the mysterious person's eyes.
Zoe was staring into the handsome face of Quentin Michaels.
