Episode No. 707 - Double Duty

Synopsis

Kendrix is training with Kai (doing very well and enjoying herself) when Damon, Leo and Maya walk in, and show Kendrix a picture in a magazine of a movie star, Carolyn Pickets, who happens to look exactly like Kendrix. Meanwhile, in the Scorpion Stinger, Furio brings in Wisewizard, a monster with information about the Lights of Orion. He tells Scorpius that the Lights are hidden in an ordinary camera somewhere on Terra Venture, and Scorpius sends the monster away, telling Wisewizard that he has only one chance.

Back on Terra Venture, Carolyn Pickets is at a photo-shoot in the park and complaining to her manager that she’s tired of all this hard work. She then complains when the Ranger teens drive past, wishing that her fans would leave her alone. The Rangers are about to go meet Carolyn when Wizewizard attacks, tearing explosive pages from his magic book and throwing them at cameras, destroying them. Carolyn is knocked to the ground in the confusion. As the unmorphed teens race over, Wisewizard throws a page at Kendrix's leg, detonating and throwing her to the ground, before then teleporting away. As the Rangers help Kendrix to her feet, Carolyn gets up, and fakes an ankle injury so her manager will let her take a day off. The Rangers bring Kendrix over to make sure that Carolyn is okay, and seeing the two standing together, the manager asks Kendrix if she could take Carolyn's place. Realising the manager is in a spot, Kendrix quickly agrees.

At a movie studio, Kendrix begins filming. In her first scene, her fellow actor puts a hand on her shoulder mid-scene and she reacts on instinct, flipping him and throwing him to the ground, while in the next scene, her leg injury causes her to trip and stumble. The last scene of the movie has her climbing a hill to speak to another character, but each time she tries it, her leg wound gets worse and worse, and after about a dozen takes, she is badly limping. Carolyn realises what's wrong. and tries to convince Kendrix to just quit. Kendrix says that she made a promise, and she's not going to quit, plain and simple. Finally, as Carolyn watches in anguish, Kendrix finally finishes the scene, perfectly. As the cast and crew celebrate, Carolyn walks over and compliments her, telling Kendrix that she would have just given up ages ago. Kendrix replies, saying that, “making a promise is easy. Keeping it is tough."

Just then, Wisewizard attacks, and everyone flees the area. Kendrix attacks the monster, stealing his magic book and hiding behind a van as Carolyn looks on. Angry, the monster charges around the van after her - and as Carolyn (posing as Kendrix) lures him into position, the real Kendrix leaps out of hiding, surprising the monster and ambushing him. The two girls get up and tell the monster he's playing with fire, and just then, the other four Rangers arrive and lure the monster away. As Kendrix thanks Carolyn, the actress tells her, "you can count on me anytime, I promise."

Wisewizard uses his book to freeze the Rangers in place, but Kendrix shows up, limping badly but still managing to beat the living daylights out of the monster. Whipping out the pink Transblaster, she destroys his magic book and frees the other four Rangers, and after defeating a horde of StingWingers, the five Rangers summon their Quasar Blasters and take the monster out. However, Wisewizard grows, so the Rangers form the Galaxy Megazord and quickly destroy him with a missile from the Condor.

Back in the girls' quarters, after catching Kendrix reading lines to herself from her movie script, everyone watchs an award ceremony on television to see that Carolyn is receiving an award. Kendrix says that Carolyn probably doesn’t even remember her, but Carolyn dedicates the award to Kendrix, saying that Kendrix taught her the value of keeping a promise and working hard. Leo says that most people dream of being stars, yet Carolyn wants to be more like Kendrix, and Kendrix smiles. Aww.

Commentary

Kendrix totally got to shine in 'Double Duty', ladies and gentlemen, and all I can say is that it's about time. I really enjoyed this episode, and can point straight to the central focus on the Pink Ranger as the cause. Kudos to Valerie Vernon for an excellent job here, she played Kendrix wonderfully. Particularly the scene on the hill - the viewer could really see her leg injury steadily getting worse in every scene, but Kendrix soldiered on regardless with her absolute stubborn refusal to quit. Awesome. Also, Carolyn was a good character as well, slowly evolving and showing more heart over the course of the episode, and it was great seeing Valerie play two roles at once, really contrasting the differences between them. But by the end, an awed Carolyn had learnt a thing or two about determination. And Leo's observation at the end of the episode was a very nice touch.

I have to say I also liked the comedic elements of Carolyn watching Kendrix take on her role, and the 'double' effects used in the episode were all really good. The only thing that bothered me in the episode was Wisewizard suddenly deducing that the Lights of Orion were inside an ordinary camera - where did he pull that piece of detective work from? Geez Scorpius, when your generals are bringing in hired help, at least check their resumés beforehand... But we had some great character focus, and a short (which is sadly an increasingly common trend) but pretty cool zord battle. And I ask you, what more in life do we really need?

Best Line of the Episode

Not really a best line, I suppose, but seeing Kendrix going over the script while making a sandwich, right at the end of the episode, was pretty cool.
