John and Marlena are trapped down in the pit. Marlena has lost hope that they will be rescued. John tries to convince her that they have time.

Marlena: This really is it. Isn't it?
John: No, this isn't it. We just have to make more noise than those damn bull dossiers.
Marlena: I don't have the strength.
John: Well I do I've got enough for the both of us.

John gets up and starts to bang on the pipe.

John: HEY THERE'S SOMEBODY DOWN HERE! COME ON! THERE'S SOMEBODY DOWN HERE!

John whistles.

John: IS ANYBODY LISTENING?

Marlena: John they can't hear you.
John: It's alright Doc. It doesn't sound like they've started bull dozing this area yet so we have a lot of time.
Marlena: How much time?
John: Enough.

John goes back to banging on the pipe.

John: WE'RE DOWN HERE!
Marlena: John! Don't!
John: Doc hand in here. Just hang in here. We're going to beat this thing.
Marlena: Are we?

John sits next to Marlena.

John: Doc you listen to me. I set up this whole demolition thing here okay. I worked for hours with the foreman on this. I know exactly when they're going to do it and what they're going to and they're not going to be over this place for a long time yet so trust me okay? Just trust me. Okay? Okay?
Marlena: I do trust you.
John: Good no more worrying.
Marlena: I can't not worry my mind goes to all kinds of places and I can't and I guess yours does too.
John: No, don't even think about that now.
Marlena: Look I know we have a chance and I know you will do all that you can to get us out of here.
John: That's right. I even hand-picked the crew up there. The best in the business. Very thorough. They'll check everything out before they even make a move.
Marlena: You mean they might find us before it's too late.
John: Oh yeah. They're going to find us. No doubt about it. Like I said. We've got time.
Marlena: Oh.
John: Don't you start crying. You get strong. Now come on. Come on. Come on.
Marlena: I'm okay. I'm okay. I just keep thinking about the things I wanted to do but I never did. All the mistakes I made with Roman...and with you. I really want to have a second chance.
John: Doc, you're going to get it by damn I'm going to give you that second chance.

John takes Marlena into his arms.

Marlena: John I know you're trying to help and I really really want to believe you're right.
John: Well good. Do believe me because I'm right. Well just keep telling yourself that over and over again.
Marlena: I just hate having regrets.
John: Everyone's got them.
Marlena: I never had them before this. At least I never admitted that I did before this. I was always really busy being in control you know just determined to stay in control and be perfect and then I guess I let everybody down didn't I?
John: Well Doc you never let anyone down before except for maybe yourself. Got that. You're always there for people. You are. You give to the kids, to Roman, to your patients. you make a difference. You change people's lives.
Marlena: Yeah well not always for the better I don't think.
John: Yeah well who's your source? Who have you been talking to huh? Talk to anybody's life you've changed lately? Why don't you talk to me. I talk from facts. You changed my life Doc. Yes siree. You made me whole again. You made me whole again Doc.
Marlena: John.
John: You remember what I was like when I came to Salem? Of course you do. Who was I huh? Who was I? Where was I? You want to talk about being in the dark. How lond was I out there?! What did you do? You just kidda. You just kept reaching out. You just kept reaching didn't you until you pulled me right in.
Marlena: But I wasn't afraid then. I wish I weren't so afraid right now.
John: Yeah well you know I think I figured out what the problem is here. You've been fighting this thing all alone for too long but you don't have to do that anymore because if you haven't noticed I'm in the problem with you too. Okay? So hey now you've got to hang in there. Now you've...you've got to fight for a little longer. That's going to be easy to do because you've got a lot of fight in you. You've got a lot of spirit and determination but you've got to reach inside and find some heart right now.
Marlena: Okay.
John: Yeah here. You need some heart.

John takes off his necklace.

John: There you go St Michael's. He's a patron saint. Protects people when they go into battle. Bo gave this to Isabella when she was sick.
Marlena: Oh.
John: Sine people might say that it didn't do Isabella any good but I'm not one of htem because she did fine Doc with guts and determination and heart, heart. She put everything into it right up to the very end.
Marlena: Roman wore this once.
John: Yeah it's pretty strange isn't it? I mean how many people do you know can say I'm not Roman Brady but I used to be him. On the other hand how many people do you know can say well I was married to him once but that was when I thought he was the man that I'm married to now.

Marlena chuckles.

Marlena: Oh. I didn't think we'd be laughing about it exactly.
John: Yeah why not? I mean why should our lives suddenly get normal? huh?
Marlena: Yeah after all we've been through who else could understand this more than we do? John: I wouldn't change my past for anything Doc.
Marlena: Niether would I. Help me put this on.

John puts the necklace around Marlena's neck.

Marlena: Well I feel better already.
John: Isabella loved you. Did you know that?
Marlena: What?
John: She loved you. She had a hard time with the past but in time she got over that. Actually she was kind of glad because of it...greatful to you really.
Marlena: Greatful to me?
John: Yeah. We had a lot of taks in Italy those last couple of days. The kind of talks you only have when...she said she wished she could have always been in my life but since she wasn't she was glad I had somebody. She was glad that it was you. She knew that you were good for me.
Marlena: Oh well. I'm touched. Why didn't you ever tell me this before?
John: I don't know. I suppose I thought that maybe...oh I don't know Doc. It's one of those things you never get around to you know.

Machinery noises start in the background.

John: Oh.
Marlena: Is it a bull dossier?
John: I'm afraid so.
Marlena: How bad is it? You can tell me. I can handle it.
John: Nothing to handle Doc.
Marlena: John.
John: Nothing to handle Doc because we're getting out of here right now. Right now Doc. Right now Doc.

John gets up and bangs on the pipe again.

John: STOP! WE'RE HERE!
Marlena: John stop. Something I have to say. I have to say it right now.

John sits next to Marlena.

Marlena: You were right. We have to fight.
John: That's right.
Marlena: But we have to be grateul too. Greatful for the memories that we have, for the people we have loved and for the people who have loved us and when we have a chance we have to thank them. So I would like to thank you for loving me.
John: You remember out trip to Mexico last year?
Marlena: I do. What about it?
John: That's when I went down there to tell the whole world that I was really Roman Brady but we all know how that turned out don't we? He was right, I was wrong. I lost my name, my job, and you. I lost everything that day.
Marlena: No you had Isabella. You had Isabella.
John: That's right I did and I loved her and I will always love IzzyB but you don't know how hard it was to let you walk away with him. As much as I loved Isabella there was a part of me that always loved you too Doc.
Marlena: I know. I know.

Bull dossiers get louder.

Marlena: Oh John!
John: It's okay. Get closer.
Marlena: Do you remember a long time ago we said to each other that if it ever had to end we really wanted to be together when it happened.
John: Yeah. I didn't think it was going to be like this though.
Marlena: Yeah well John. God I'm glad we're together.
John: So am I Doc. It's going to be okay.
Marlena: I can't breathe.
John: It's going to be okay.
Marlena: I can't breathe.
John: It's going to be okay. STOP!
