The scene opens with Roman on a plane heading back to Salem after Marlena's death
in the plane crash. Roman opens the letter that Olivia gave to him. Marlena had written
the letter just before Orpheus sent her away.
My Beloved Roman,
I don't have much time Orpheus will be here soon. He said he intends to separate
us forever. There's a finality in his tone that I had never heard before. You know
what's in my heart but on the chance that this letter will reach you there are some
things I'll just feel better knowing that I've said. Roman, you are right now in
almost the exact position Orpheus was in seven years ago. Please don't do what he
did. Don't become bitter. Don't become consumed with revenge.
Roman stops
reading the letter. He looks out the window. He shifts around in his seat and goes
back to reading the letter.
Please don't give Orpheus that victory. Please
don't mourn my death too long. Fill your life and the children's lives with love
and laughter. It would not honor me to see you stuck in the past. It would delight
me no end to see you get over this hurdle and get on with your life. And always...always
to hear you laugh.
Scene fades to Roman and Marlena hugging. Marlena lets
go and tries to leave but Roman stops her.
Roman: I'm not going to
let you go. I don't care what you say.
Marlena: Roman, don't you understand.
We don't have any choice. It's done.
Roman: No, no don't say that.
Marlena:
Now listen to me. I have to go soon. There's something I want you to do. I want you
to go on with your life.
Roman: I can't do that.
Marlena: You
can do that. You know what would make me really happy?
Remember all those crazy,
silly, awful wonderful times we had. Remember when you brought your sleeping bag
over and you parked on my floor...remember when you tried to show off and took me
skiing and you almost got me killed...remember our wedding...remember when our children
were born. I want to know that those things made your life richer and better. That'll
make it easier for both of us.
Roman: They do. They do but that's not
enough. We've got so much more.
Marlena: Oh Roman. We've had so much.
Roman: It doesn't have to end.
Marlena: It's not going to end.
Roman: Well then you'll stay.
Marlena: Not the way you think.
Roman: What do you mean?
Marlena: Roman, I'll always be with
you. I'll always be a part of you. The same as you're a part of me now. Don't you
understand that?
Roman: Yes, but honey it hurts so bad.
Marlena:
I know it hurts. Remember this, I want you to be happy. That's what I want. I
want you to go on. I love you. I'll always love you but we have to let go.
Roman:
We have to let go.
Marlena: Don't move!
Marlena gets up on her
tippy toes and kisses Roman on the lips.
Marlena: You be happy. You
be happy. Good-bye!
Marlena walks away from Roman. She never takes her eyes
off of him. She places her index finger on her lips and kisses it. She points it
in Roman's direction as to throw him one last kiss. She turns around and walks away
but she turns around to look at him one last time before she's gone forever.
Roman: Good-bye Marlena!
Scene ends with Roman crying clutching
the letter to his heart.
