RoJohn and Marlena enter her hotel room.
Marlena: I didn't have much
money on me.
RoJohn: When did you check in?
Marlena: A couple
of days ago. Five days actually.
RoJohn: Five days! Doc that's almost
a week.
Marlena: I know that.
RoJohn: Well why didn't you come
to me?
Marlena: Roman I tried to contact you that's why I called the precinct
so many times.
RoJohn: You didn't leave a message for me though.
Marlena:
What would you thought if I had?
RoJohn: Still the idea of you wandering
around here staying away from your own home...from me..from the kids.
Marlena:
I didn't want to stay away Roman. The whole time that I was trying to get home all
I could think of was you and the children. Just holding you again. I wanted to promise
to never ever leave you again.
RoJohn: Then what stopped you?
Marlena:
Well think about it. when I left the children were babies. I mean to them I'm
just a woman in a photograph. I'm just someone they heard stories about.
RoJohn:
No. Doc, you are their mother.
Marlena: They don't know that Roman.
It really hurts me to say that but it's true. What would you want me to say? Hi kids!
It's me! It's your momma! I mean they wouldn't know how to handle that. That's why
I had to find you first.
RoJohn: I'm not sure I'm handling this any better
than the twins would.
Marlena: I saw them you know.
RoJohn: You
saw them. When? When did you see them?
Marlena: I came to the house. I
came to see you but you weren't there and the children were. They're so beautiful.
They've grown so much. Eric is so much bigger than Sami is. I couldn't believe it.
RoJohn: he doesn't let her forget about it for a second. They're twins,
they're in competition you know anything you can do I can do better.
Marlena:
Can he? Do things better than she can?
RoJohn: Are you kidding me? My
son?
Marlena: Hmm.
RoJohn: Nah!
They both laugh.
RoJohn:
Sami rode a bike before he did!
Marlena: Oh no! My daughter!
RoJohn:
Oh she jumped on that two wheeler and she split down the street like she owned the
whole block. You should have seen it.
Marlena: Oh I wish I had! I should...I
should have been there to cheer her on! I should have been there to comfort Eric.
I should have been there when they woke up in the night and they couldn't go back
to sleep because they were having bad dreams. I should have been there when they
were sick and they needed their momma to make them feel better.
RoJohn:
Doc...Doc!
Marlena: All that time...all those moments. They're gone Roman.
Marlena sits down on the bed.
Marlena: I can't make up for that anymore.
RoJohn sits down on the bed with Marlena. Marlena turns to face RoJohn.
Marlena:
Do you know what that feels like I mean just to step into a place that you know
and that you love then find out that everythings changed and everybody you know had
moved on without you.
RoJohn: I'm going to be here for you right through
this whole thing. I want to know exactly how you feel. Exactly what you're going
through. I don't know if I can.
Marlena: I don't know. I don't know. I
don't know if I can know what you've been through for five years.
RoJohn:
Oh. After you died, after I thought you died I would wake up every morning thinking
you were going to be there and that was the best part of my day that split second
before it hit me and I realized you weren't going to be there for me doc. You weren't
going to be there ever again.
Marlena: I'm sorry you went through that.
RoJohn: I'd have dreams about you. God. Night after night I would dream
about you. Always the same it was you and me and Eric and Sami and Carrie. It would
be the trip we would take and just simple car rides...just the last night...just
the whole family together..the last night of you and I together. Yeah well I'm just
rambling on and on here. Aren't I?
Their haunting instrumental song begings to
play.
Marlena: It's okay. Roman you were just trying to survive me. You
were just trying to get on with your life and now I've come back and I've turned
everything upside down on you.
RoJohn: You've come back and you're real
and I can see you smile and I can touch you. I can touch you. I can...Roman leans
in to kiss Marlena but he stops.
RoJohn: The kids.
Marlena:
What?
RoJohn: You saw the kids that means you were at the...you were at
the house.
Marlena: Yes.
RoJohn: Tonight that means that you
know about..
Marlena: Yes.
RoJohn: You saw the party.
Marlena:
Yes, I know it was an engagement party. I saw your fiancee. I saw you give her the
ring.
They gaze into each other's eyes. Marlena turns her back to RoJohn.
Marlena:
Her name is Isabella.
RoJohn: Yes it is. How did you know?
Marlena:
I heard the children say it. That's a very pretty name. She's lovely Roman.
RoJohn:
Doc, I'm sorry.
Marlena turns back towards RoJohn.
Marlena: No...no
I'm not saying this to upset you.
RoJohn: I just feel as though I should
apologize or something.
Marlena: Why? You thought I was dead. You were
getting on with your life. It wasn't like you rushed into something. I mean it was
5 years.
RoJohn: But if I had known you were alive.
Marlena:
How could you have possibly known that?
RoJohn: I don't know Doc. I just..I
should have felt it. I should have sensed it.
Marlena: Don't do this to
yourself Roman. You've been through enough all ready.
RoJohn: My god we
have so much to talk about.
Marlena: I know we do. Roman there are people
waiting at your house for you.
RoJohn: I can't go back there yet. NO way!
Marlena: All right you have to call. You owe her that.
RoJohn:
Doc, I have no idea what I would say.
Marlena: Well sooner or later you
're going to have to tell her the truth.
RoJohn: Yeah
RoJohn turns
towards the phone.
RoJohn: I don't even know what the truth is.
RoJohn
picks up the phone and dials. The scene switches to the party at the Brady house.
The phone rings and IzzyB answers it.
IzzyB: Hello?
RoJohn: It's
me.
IzzyB: Roman Hi where are you? Is there a problem?
RoJohn:
Well this thing is taking a little bit longer than I expected.
IzzyB: Oh
well I called the station.
RoJohn: What?
IzzyB: I called the
station. I was worried about you and they don't know anything about this case.
RoJohn:
This is something that I'm handling on my own. It may take a while I'm not sure how
long.
IzzyB: Oh well it's it's okay really. Um hey listen it's lesson
number one in life as Mrs. Cop? Right?
RoJohn: Thanks for understanding
sweetheart. RoJohn pauses. I'll be back as soon as I can.
IzzyB: Okay.
Please...Please be careful. I love you.
RoJohn: Me too.
RoJohn hangs
up the phone.
Marlena: I love you.
RoJohn: What?
Marlena
gets up from the bed.
Marlena: Before she hung up the phone she said I
love you. That's why you said me too. Wasn't it?
RoJohn: Yes.
The
scene continues with Marlena telling how she got back to Salem.
RoJohn: So
you stowed away on the plane.
Marlena: Um hum.
RoJohn: Then
what?
Marlena: Well I was in the cargo hold and we could hear the pilot's
announcements. We made one stop.
RoJohn: I don't even know where to start,
Doc. I hope you weren't planning on getting any sleep tonight young lady.
Marlena:
No. Roman you have a party going on.
RoJohn: Forget about that party.
What about you?
Marlena: What about me? Well...if it were up to me I'd
have you stay here all night just so I could look at you but it's not about me. You've
got the twins, they'll wake up and wonder where their daddy is and there's Isabella.
RoJohn: Yes.
Marlena: So we'll talk tomorrow. You can come
by here.
RoJohn: Fine.
Marlena: You know we've got a lot of
things that we have to get settled especially about the children. Like how we're
going to break the news to them.
RoJohn: Your the doc. I'll follow your
lead on this one.
Marlena: I don't want to wait any longer than I have
to on that. I love them so much. I want them to know that. I want them to know they
have a mother.
RoJohn: We'll work it out...tomorrow. Talk everything out
tomorrow.
Marlena: You still don't believe it's real Roman. I'd like to
tell you how I feel about it. Remember when you were talking about your dreams and
how you'd relive the past...about the last time...the last day that you and the children
were together and the last night you and I spent together. Well that was 5 years
ago for you but to me it's still 1986 and Roman... Marlena moves closer to him. She
whispers in his ears.
Marlena: The last day we spent with the children
was yesterday and the last night that with you was last night. OH! Oh you smell so
good.
Marlena looks at Roman and she wipes his tears away.
RoJohn:
I can't Doc.
Marlena: Okay! I understand. I understand.
RoJohn:
It's...it's just. It seems. It seems wrong. It just seems crazy. It's just a
crazy situation.
Marlena: Yeah, look I think you should just go home.
I'm all right.
RoJohn: Are you?
Marlena: I'm fine.
RoJohn:
I'll call you tomorrow.
Marlena: Good.
RoJohn: I think you
should stay here for the time being. I don't want somebody else to tell the children.
As soon as we can we'll get a doctor in here to check you out. In the mean time tell
me your money situation. How are you fixed for money?
Marlena: Well I'm
out of it mostly.
RoJohn hands Marlena some money.
RoJohn: Here that
ought to hold you at least for tonight.
Marlena: Thank you.
RoJohn:
I'd better go. This isn't exactly the kind of home coming you were expecting is it?
Marlena: I'm not sure what I expected really.
RoJohn: We'll
work it out. I don't know how Doc but we're going to work this out. I promise you
that.
RoJohn leaves. The scene ends with Marlena sitting on the bed crying.
